Classification by Characteristics

● Strategic Information − Long term policy decisions that defines the


objectives of a business. For example, acquiring a new plant, a new product,
diversification of business etc, comes under strategic information.

● Tactical Information − The information needed for exercising control over


business resources, like budgeting, quality control, service level, inventory
level, productivity level etc.

● Operational Information − Plant/business level information and is used to


ensure proper conduction of specific operational tasks as planned/intended.
Example: Various operator/shift specific jobs

● Planning Information − For establishing standard norms and specifications in an


organization. Examples: Time standards, Design standards.

● Control Information − For establishing control over all business activities through
feedback mechanism.

● Knowledge Information − acquired through experience and learning, and used


for training new employees

● Organizational Information − emphasizes that an organization collects, manages


and uses information prudently.

● Functional/Operational Information − This is operation specific information. For


example, daily schedules in a manufacturing plant that refers to the detailed
assignment of jobs to machines or machines to operators.

● Database Information − large quantities of information that has multiple usage


and application. For example, material specification or supplier information is
stored for multiple users.

Information is needed in Human Resources Management:

Strategic Information:
1. Long range human resource requirements at different levels.
2. Policies on human resource development and training
3. Policies on personnel welfare and facilities

Tactical Information:
1. Performance appraisal.
2. Production incentives.
3. Morale of personnel, Absentee reduction.
4. Leave and overtime policies,Personnel deployment policies.

Operational Information:
1. Routine assessment. ,Skills inventory.
2. Loan/advances and recoveries, Leave record.
