The Reading Report of

Christmas Day in the Morning

Christmas Day in the Morning is written by Pearl S. Buck ,who was an American
writer. After searching many information about her, I think there are three points
should be highlighted. First, she lived in China for 18 years as a teacher. Second, she
is an successful writer, who was awarded Nobel Prize in Literature because of her
masterpieces The Good Earth,The Exile and East Wind ,West Wind. It is interesting
that these three pieces are all about China and the Nobel Committee commented that
there are rich and true epic descriptions of the life of Chinese farmers in her works.
Besides, she won the Pulitzer Prize. Third, she participated actively in feminism. And
she built East and West Association with her husband to promote the cultural
understanding and exchange between Asia and the West.

The short story Christmas Day in the Morning tells the love in family. When Rob was
young , he had to help his father milk every morning. Overheard on his father’s
words that “I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast and he needs his
sleep. If you could see how he sleeps when I go in to wake him up! I wish I could
manage alone.” he first knew his father loved him. On the Christmas Day morning, he
decided to milk alone, which was his Christmas gift to his father and also a token of
his love. Father was moved when he saw the milk. Now Rob was old, he wanted to
write a card to his wife and tell her how much he loved her this Christmas.

Reading such story is moved and it is definitely meaningful. The theme of this story is
love.” Love alone could awaken love. “Rob said. I think it means love is mutual and
the writer ‘s opinion about love is realistic. Although we think love should be selfless
,the undeniable fact is we do have desires for not only loving others but also being
loved. What’s more, specifically in this short story, I think if you love someone, you
should tell him. Rob didn’t know his father love him and hated waking up early to
help his father until he overheard his father ‘s words. So, maybe the hazy love is
attractive, but sometimes we need a distinct love.

It is the first time I have read Pearl S. Buck’s works. The descriptions in this story is
easy to understand and plain. However the writer used a lot of words to describe
characters , especially psychological description and language description. These
details worked together to show a complete, warm and moving story.

That’s all.
