MAE Grading Guidelines

The program grading policy for required courses states that course instructors may utilize any scheme
for assessing students and assigning grades subject to:
1. the restrictions of the Academic policies and procedures manual, and
2. a grade of C or better can only be given to students demonstrating mastery of all the course
core outcomes.

Assignments:
• Problem sets will be assigned each week and due the following week. Students must upload .pdf
copy of their assignment to the course’s Gradescope page for grading. These assignments will
typically be due Saturdays at 11:59 PM unless otherwise noted on the pdf.
• Written solutions are to be submitted to Gradescope (https://gradescope.com/).
• Students will be sent a link to create their Gradescope accounts for this course automatically once
ASU’s add deadline has passed. Do NOT make your own account.

Canvas:
• Canvas will be used to distribute class materials, announcements and course policies.
• Your grades will be available through Gradescope, although we may post calculated grades
periodically on Canvas.
• All sections of MAE 201 will share the same Canvas page.

Ed Discussion:
• Ed Discussion will be the tool used to allow for discussion on the material of the class. You do not
need to create an account; an account will be generated for you.

Course Syllabus, Fall 2022

• Please make sure you follow the discussions in Ed Discussion forum to answer any questions you
may have on the material covered in class. Some announcements may be posted periodically there
as well.
• Do not post anything threatening or inappropriate to Ed Discussion. Even if you post anonymously,
the instructor can see the accounts from which posts are made.

Attendance and class participation:

• Attendance is required for all lecture sessions. All students are responsible for the
materials/quizzes/test covered in all lectures. Make-up homework/tests/quizzes are not provided.
• Credit will be awarded for in-class activities following the grading distribution shown in this
document. There is no makeup for missed credit due to class absences.

Videos and preparing for class:

• You are required to check videos and other preparation from the weekly class schedule on our class
website. Please watch the videos on time for every class until the end of the video and answer all
the questions. You are graded for answering the video questions, not on getting them right. If you
watch less than 90% of the videos on time, you will be docked 1% of your final course grade for
each additional video you miss, or 0.5% for each video you watch late. If you watch none of the
videos, it will lower your grade to about a “C”.
• Videos will be accessible through Canvas.

Homework:
• Homework will be due at the date and time marked on the assignment. If the due date or time
changes, an announcement will be officially posted on Canvas.
• Homework/Tests/Quiz answers must be written and organized in a professional manner or
points will be deducted. When grading your homework/tests/quizzes, others should be able to
follow your thought process throughout the problem. Comment your solutions and show your
work. You will receive 0 points if a grader cannot easily follow your process.
• No late homework submissions are accepted.

Quizzes and Exams:

• There will be two (2) Midterm Exams and one (1) Final Exam.
• Homework Assessment Quizzes are conducted every Monday, unless there is an Exam or Monday
is a holiday.
• Homework Assessment Quizzes will take approximately 10-15 minutes covering the previous
week’s homework material.
• You can improve your quiz scores by attending Friday recitation sessions. During recitations, you
will be given a set of problems based on concepts that were not mastered in the quiz. Successfully
completing these problems will allow you earn 60% to 90% of the points missed in the quiz. You
must attend the recitation the week of the quiz that you want to improve your grade of.
• Note 1: You must present your ASU ID to verify your identity during all quizzes and exams. You
will receive a zero (0) on the test if you fail to present your ASU ID card.
• Note 2: During a quiz or exam, the only allowed material that may be physically on your person
include: yourself, your clothes, a pen/pencil, eraser, scientific calculator, ASU ID, and the
quiz/exam. No notes, books, papers, or reference materials are allowed.
o ALL other items must be physically stored in a SEALED, opaque container (i.e. your
backpack with the zipper closed) located on the floor. This includes phones, wallets,

pieces of paper, keys, etc. You may not have anything in your pockets or lap. Any
unauthorized materials physically present on you will be treated as violation of ASU
Academic Integrity Policy. Your quiz/exam will be confiscated, and the violation will be
treated per ASU’s Academic Integrity Policy.
o If a student has medically necessary equipment that must be accessible during a test, you
must inform the instructor(s) before the exam that you have additional equipment you need
access to. We do not need to know your specific condition, but you must inform the
instructor(s) if the equipment includes anything that can store or transmit information
(including paper).
• Note 3: No tablets, phones, “smart” watches, or any electronic device capable of communicating
is allowed.
Grading:
Homework Assignments (from Problem sets) 5%
Homework Assessment Quizzes 15%
In-class activities 10%

Note: Regardless of cumulative points, per ABET requirements, a grade of C or better
can only be given to students demonstrating mastery of all the course core outcomes.

General Class Policies:

• Grade Discrepancies: Students have a period of seven (7) calendar days from when an
assignment/quiz/test scores are posted to make re-grade requests.
• Regrade requests must be specific and point to an error in the application of the grading rubrics
(example – “grader missed work on following page”).
• Regrade requests result in the problem being re-graded by an instructor and may result in a lower
score if the grading errors were originally made in your favor. It is strongly suggested that you
compare your work with posted solutions before submitting a re-grade request.

Classroom Behavior:
• Cell phones must be turned off or in silent-mode during class to avoid causing distractions. The
use of recording devices is not permitted during class unless you are given consent by the instructor.
• Until further notified, per ASU policy, faculty, staff, students and visitors, are required to wear face
coverings in classrooms, labs, offices and community spaces.

Incomplete Grade:
• An “incomplete” may be awarded only in cases when a student, who is otherwise performing
satisfactorily, cannot complete final course requirements, such as the final exam or final
assignment, due to circumstances beyond the student’s control (such as illness or family
emergency). Such circumstances must be documented. Incompletes will be approved only within

Course Syllabus, Fall 2022
MAE 201 – Mechanics of Particles and Rigid Bodies I: Statics
the last one or two weeks of the semester. Incompletes cannot be requested after the time of the
scheduled final exam for the course. To request a grade of incomplete, the student must formally
apply to the instructor using the university’s “Incomplete Grade Request” form. Requests must be
submitted to the student’s advisor prior to the final grade due date and are subject to final approval
by the program.

Absence Policies:
• Your presence is required in all classes, recitations, and exams (except for religious observance of
official university-recognized religious holidays, attendance of university-sanctioned events and
activities)
• When sick with communicable disease or documented illness that requires you to miss class, you
must get it documented by a medical doctor and the doctor’s note e-mailed to your instructor prior
to class.
• Make up Exams and Homework postponements will be given for absences that are due to religious
observances/practices that are approved by university policy or due to other events or activities
sanctioned by the university. In those cases, the student must notify the instructor at least two weeks
ahead so that arrangements can be made.
• Make-up exams and quizzes will be different versions from the ones given in class, although the
difficulty level will be as similar as possible.
• Students who expect to miss class due to officially university-sanctioned activities should inform
the instructor early in the semester. Alternative arrangements will generally be made for any
examinations and other graded in-class work affected by such absences. The preceding policies are
based on ACD 304–04, “Accommodation for Religious Practices” and ACD 304–02, “Missed
Classes Due to University-Sanctioned Activities.”

Academic Integrity and Copyright Laws:

• Students in this class must adhere to ASU’s academic integrity policy, which can be found at
https://provost.asu.edu/academic-integrity/policy. Students are responsible for reviewing this
policy and understanding each of the areas in which academic dishonesty can occur. In addition,
all engineering students are expected to adhere to both the ASU Academic Integrity Honor Code
and the Fulton Schools of Engineering Honor Code. All academic integrity violations will be
reported to the Fulton Schools of Engineering Academic Integrity Office (AIO). The AIO
maintains record of all violations and has access to academic integrity violations committed in all
other ASU college/schools.
• Unethical behavior (cheating) will not be tolerated and will be sanctioned by a zero score for the
assignment, quiz, or exam, and, at the instructor’s discretion, the final course grade may be lowered
by one letter grade.
• Homework, Quizzes, and Exams are considered as individual assignments, not as group assignment
unless specified by the instructor.
• You are welcome to discuss the homework with others, but is expected (in fact, required by ASU’s
academic integrity policy) that your homework represent your own understanding and efforts and
may not represent the work of others. Students caught violating the Student Academic Integrity
Policy (AIP) will be sanctioned according to ASU’s AIP policy. This includes students helping
others violate the AIP.
• Course content, including lectures, are copyrighted materials and students may not share outside
the class, upload to online websites not approved by the instructor, sell, or distribute course content
or notes taken during the conduct of the course (see ACD 304–06, “Commercial Note Taking
Services” and ABOR Policy 5-308 F.14 for more information).

• You must refrain from uploading to any course shell, discussion board, or website used by the
course instructor or other course forum, material that is not the student's original work, unless the
students first comply with all applicable copyright laws; faculty members reserve the right to delete
materials on the grounds of suspected copyright infringement.

Policy Against Threatening Behavior:

• Students, faculty, staff, and other individuals do not have an unqualified right of access to university
grounds, property, or services. Interfering with the peaceful conduct of university-related business
or activities or remaining on campus grounds after a request to leave may be considered a crime.
All incidents and allegations of violent or threatening conduct by an ASU student (whether on- or
off-campus) must be reported to the ASU Police Department (ASU PD) and the Office of the Dean
of Students.

ASU Honor Code:

“As an Arizona State University student I will conduct myself with honor and integrity at all times. I
will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor will I accept the actions of those who do.”
For additional information, visit: https://provost.asu.edu/academicintegrity

Disability Accommodations:
• Suitable accommodations will be made for students having disabilities. Students needing
accommodations must register with the ASU disabilities resource Center and provide
documentation of that registration to the instructor. Students should communicate the need for an
accommodation in sufficient time for it to be properly arranged.

Harassment and Sexual Discrimination:

• Arizona State University is committed to providing an environment free of discrimination,
harassment, or retaliation for the entire university community, including all students, faculty
members, staff employees, and guests. ASU expressly prohibits discrimination, harassment,
and retaliation by employees, students, contractors, or agents of the university based on any
protected status: race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual
orientation, gender identity, and genetic information.
• Title IX is a federal law that provides that no person be excluded on the basis of sex from
participation in, be denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education
program or activity. Both Title IX and university policy make clear that sexual violence and
harassment based on sex is prohibited. An individual who believes they have been subjected to
sexual violence or harassed on the basis of sex can seek support, including counseling and academic
support, from the university. If you or someone you know has been harassed on the basis of sex or
sexually assaulted, you can find information and resources at
https://sexualviolenceprevention.asu.edu/faqs.
