ABSTRACT

The present study describes the antidiabetic, hemolytic and antimicrobial activity of
Piper betle(leaf), Annona squamosa(leaf), Morus indica(leaf). Methanolic extracts were prepared
from these plants and their hemolytic, antidiabetic and antimicrobial, antioxidant activities were
evaluated. First the hemolytic activities of the plants were tested on human erythrocytes so as to
check the toxicity of the plants selected. The results showed that the percentage of hemolysis of
all the samples were less so they are considered as nontoxic. ABTS assay was performed for the
above mentioned plants among them Piper betle, Annona squamosa showed a very good
antioxidant activity. The standard Quercetin showed significant antioxidant activity with IC50
values of 4.944 µg/ml. Cell cytotoxicity against 3T3L1 cell line was determined by MTT assay
and the results suggest that Morus indica and Annona squamosa has more proliferative capability
on 3T3L1 cells compared to the other plant extracts. Alpha amylase activity was determined for
three plant extracts and These results suggests that the Annona squamosa extract has significant
alpha-amylase activity with the IC50 value of 91.04 and 153.2 µg/ml repectively. Also Alpha
glucosidase assay was conducted for inhibitory activity of alpha glucosidase and the result
showed the Annona squamosa, Piper betle and Morus indica have inhibited the activity of alpha
glucosidase with IC50 values of 45.73, 281.4 and 124.9 µg/ml. Which indicates Piper betle,
Annona squamosa is an effective antidiabetic drug.
