BE LOYAL TO THE ROYAL

Introduction
This essay will be written about the British Royal Family. When anyone thinks of Britain or England,
perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is the iconic characters of the Royal Family. We know that
this line of descendants makes up the British Monarchy, serving above the people of the
commonwealth under the control of Britain. With that dignity comes an equally great responsibility.
The British Monarchy is composed of a King or Queen and their family, whose heirs inherit the
throne when the King or Queen dies. The current Royal family is known as the “House of Windsor”
and was created in 1917. But, is the monarchy necessary? Should they stay or should they go?
British Royal Costs
A financial report revealed that the royal family cost the British people £102.4 million during the
previous year. So many people, like me and British young people, think that this expense is
unnecessary, so they want to ditch the monarchy.
In my opinion, inspite of the British monarchy represents British history and identity in all its
aspects, both good and bad; and when you see the Queen you not only see history since 1952, when
she took the throne, but you see a person who provides a sense of historical continuity with the
past, I think that it can no longer be maintained by the British people, even knowing that there is a
lot of poverty right there and around the world.
“According to the survey by YouGov, 41% of those aged 18 to 24 thought there should now be an
elected head of state compared to 31% who wanted a king or queen”.
As we can see the younger people are more aware of the problems that concern their country and
the world, and if in England the British government is leaded by the prime minister, and England is
a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional Monarch as head of state, the royal family is just
appearance and glamour for British society.
British Royal Family scandals.
“The British Royal Family is well known all over the world, partly due to the fact that Britain once
ruled large parts of the world, but also because of all the scandals and difficulties that have made
bold and sensational newspaper”.
These scandals are what, from my point of view, have increased the boom in the British family, and
the whole world is always watching what happens to them; so they work as distractors in all over the
world, to notice the real problems the world has.
Some people think that it doesn’t matter. But as we can see from the volumes of press coverage,
what the royal family do and say, and their reputation, still has weight nowadays.
Since the divorce of Princess Diana and Prince Charles in 1992, until the Prince Henry and his wife
Meghan Markle step down from their senior royal duties, and finally this happened on February
2021.
But this last event, caused a big reaction from british society, because the young people agreed
with their decision and the older ones didn’t.

I think that it was a big step to show the world that to be in a royal family isn’t a pleasure and a
distinction. Because Henry and Meghan were tired to be in that environment and its rules.
Royal British rules
“It’s clear that being part of the British royal family isn’t all tiaras and travel. There are some pretty
stringent—and strange—etiquette guidelines and traditions that the British Royal members
adhere to”.
There are many rules or protocol that the British royal members have to follow, and some of them
are really amazing, but if they don’t follow them, they are punished.
For example, in many articles I found some of them like; when the queen stands, everybody stand,
no one can eat after the queen has finished her meal, approval is needed before a proposal, the
family can’t have political views, tiaras are only worn by married women, never touch monarch’s
accessories, they have a strict dress code, etc.
I suppose that when the prince Harry got married with Meghan, a girl who was an actress before
meeting the prince Harry, they felt overwhelmed by the monarchy, their rules, and the behavior
that all the members had with Meghan mainly. So they were tired of that and they decided of step
down.
In my case I wouldn’t like to follow so many rules imposed to please society.
Conclusion
Even though they have luxuries, fun, and a lot of money, the British royal family can't enjoy life
the way we do. This for me is a relief, because If you don't belong to royalty, you can do whatever
you want in your life, and do what you like when you want.
I’m so grateful to don’t belong there, even if I don’t have money, because for me, true wealth is
health, freedom, being able to live with our family, and make our own decisions.
And on the other hand I believe that the monarchy should not exist. And that all that money that
is spent on keeping them, should be used for the people who really need it.
They are unnecessary expenses, and could be used to help many people in the world, including for
research on favor of health and technology.
But we don’t know how much longer will there be, not only the British royal family, but the
monarchy where it still exists.
I hope that young people can do something to get it removed, and do more things for their
country. I can’t imagine what would they do if suddenly they don´t have all the rights and money
they have.
At least there were already two royals who decided to live their lives apart, even with the
punishments imposed, I think it was a good decision for them, and a good example for the world.
