A YEAR OF

FUTURE

IDENTITY
DIVERSITY The 2021-2022 academic year has been an
eventful one for ISL Qatar and our school
community as we continued to navigate
through the troubled waters of COVID but
also started to witness the silver linings of a
“normal” life slowly emerging. Through the
challenges, we have come out more resilient
and more determined than ever to learn
from these experiences and to continue our
exciting journey of educational innovation
and excellence.

During the next academic year, Qatar will

be gearing up for the momentous FIFA
World Cup and the International School of
London will also be celebrating its very own
special occasion – 50 years at the forefront of
international education!

I look forward to us celebrating this

milestone together.

Community, Belonging, Identity. ISL Qatar strives to be

a learning community where everyone experiences a

sense of belonging and can become the best version of
themselves. As the world begins transitioning from the
acute phase of the pandemic into something resembling
an endemic phase, we can reflect on what we deem most
important as individuals and as a community. We get
to grapple with questions such as, “What do we cherish
most, what should we keep doing, what do we need to
begin to do differently, and what should we stop doing?”
Based my discussions with family, friends, and the ISL
Qatar community, I know that getting back to being
a community of connected human beings is on top of
everyone’s list. I am proud of how ISL Qatar students,
staff and parents have pulled together and supported
one another, and now, we are aspiring towards an even
better future. This 2021-22 yearbook is a celebration
of our community. In its pages, you will observe
tremendous transformations including:
If you want to go • a range of learning formats and activities: hybrid,
quickly, go alone. online and in-person learning;
If you want to go far, • young people who have grown physically, emotionally,
go together.” and academically;
AFRICAN PROVERB • and classroom learning communities who have
intentionally developed time, space, and group
identities to ensure that everyone belongs.
Thank you for being a welcoming community and thank
you for being a part of these special memories.

Eco Club meet on a weekly basis
to plan and create projects in
the school inspired by the UN
Sustainable Development Goals,
which is vital to incorporate
into our curriculum as a critical
thinking tool. We are open to
students from PYP, MYP and DP
as well as parents and staff. We
have a variety of events and
actions related to recycling,
biodiversity and improving the
school grounds. We are currently
working on the 'Forest School
Project' to create a miniature
ecological space where the
whole school will be able to
explore Nature and discover
more about the native plants
of Qatar and the importance of
Biodiversity. We have a school
allotment for fruit, herbs, and
vegetables, and we are working
to reduce waste by changing our
individual actions at school and
at home and also in the wider
community. We have received
a medal from the Qatar Green

The world in which we learn, live and work

is ever-changing, and places great demands
on current and future generations to be
dynamic, adaptable and agile; capable of
embracing complexity and uncertainty, and
able to harness creativity to address complex
global challenges. We cannot possibly know
what circumstances, jobs or challenges await
our learners in the future, but educators can
prepare them to navigate the 21st Century
world by developing a range of skills that
are transversal, focusing on deconstructing
problems, re-structuring information, and
the application of novel ideas and solutions.
21st Century Skills include creative problem
solving, adaptable thinking, critical
thinking, communication, digital literacy,
and computational thinking – and social
and emotional competencies including
empathy, perspective-taking, negotiation
and self-management, to name a few.
These are all skills that are in high demand
in communities, societies, schools and
workplaces, as we work together to address
the pressing global issues of our time.

The Mother Tongue Cultural Village is a whole-

school project that involved collaboration between
students in the PYP and MYP, as well as encouraging
collaboration between the different Mother Tongue
languages. In this project, our PYP students had the
role of content creation – creating the experiences
that shaped the visit to the village. Our MYP students
were tasked with building famous monuments or
sites of cultural significance from their home country
and collaborating with the PYP students to build an
educational Minecraft World.
Visitors of the Cultural Village could explore our venues
and enjoy our diverse performances. They were able to
visit virtually our refined restaurants and savour many
traditional meals. They enjoyed walking the beautiful
pathways, learned about different cultural heritages
and appreciated many artistic talents.
This ambitious and innovative project would not have
been possible without the endless dedication and
enthusiasm of the entire teaching Mother Tongue team
and the support of our Tech Hub, Dr. Catherine Morgan
and Ms. Ariana Correia as well as the collaboration
of the Communications' team at ISL Qatar. It was an
incredible and enriching experience for All.

team held its first exhibition:
“The Hundred Languages
of Children in the PYP”. This
project is a celebration of
thoughts, ideas and work of
children through photographs,
words, paintings, drawings
and sculptures.

This exhibition showcased

children’s incredible
creativity and embraced the
child as their own “seeker
of meaning”. It displayed
a unique, beautiful and
intriguing insight into how
children think.

was created by RX Fogarty in
2009. It began when he started
taking portraits of New Orleans

to their city. It has become an

This year has been an eventful year for Grade 8C. We succeeded as a class
and bonded over strenuous times. We helped each other with our tasks,
our behaviour, and our feelings by talking it out and reducing our level
of excitement. We are now not only peers but friends who have bonded
over 200 days. We have all grown fond of the environment that we have
built, and although we are leaving to begin another year, we will leave with

There’s no one like the Ambitious Circle. They are a bunch of intelligent and quirky

individuals who continue to carve out their own path. Their individual passions and interests
drive them to beat procrastination and complete those dreaded DP deadlines. There are
budding actors, writers, philosophers, comedians, entrepreneurs, CEOs, humanitarians,
engineers and many more. The Ambitious Circle is a set of students whose lifelong
friendships aim to encourage and support each other wherever they are in the world.
