The Proctor’s Personal Igloo

John and Elizabeth Proctor’s marriage is metaphorically represented by winter because

the relationship is dry and cold due to John’s affair with Abigail. The conversations John and

Elizabeth have are passionless. John and Elizabeth talk to each other as if they’re afraid to hurt

one another’s feelings. Elizabeth says subtle things doubting John’s loyalty such as, “You come

so late I thought you’d gone to Salem this afternoon”(Miller 51). Because of her suspicions and

lack of trust in John, Elizabeth assumes John went to Salem and was probably doing something

with Abigail. That’s what keeps John and Elizabeth's household “cold”. John also can sense the

pressure that Elizabeth applies towards her suspicion of his whereabouts. John gets so angry with

Elizabeth to the point where he yells at her saying , “You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’.

Learn charity, woman. I have gone tiptoe in this house all seven month since she is gone” (Miller

54). There is no love or passion to “warm up” their house. Just about every encounter between

Elizabeth and John is filled with icy tension.
