Vaccine-naive

Vaccine-naive is a lack of immunit y, or immunologic memory, t o a disease because t he person

has not been vaccinat ed. There are a variet y of reasons why a person may not have received a
vaccinat ion, including cont raindicat ions due t o preexist ing medical condit ions, lack of resources,
previous vaccinat ion failure, religious beliefs, personal beliefs, fear of side-effect s, phobias t o
needles, lack of informat ion, vaccine short ages, physician knowledge and beliefs, social pressure,
and nat ural resist ance.[1][2][3][4]

The time-course of an immune response begins with the initial pathogen encounter, (or initial vaccination) and leads to the
formation and maintenance of active immunological memory.

Effect on herd immunity

Communicable diseases, such as measles and influenza, are more readily spread in vaccine-naive
populat ions, causing frequent out breaks. Vaccine-naive persons t hreat en what epidemiologist s
call herd immunit y.[5][6][7] This is because vaccinat ions provide not just prot ect ion t o t hose who
receive t hem, but also provide indirect prot ect ion t o t hose who remain suscept ible because of
t he reduced prevalence of infect ious diseases. Fewer individuals available t o t ransmit t he
disease reduce t he incidence of it , creat ing herd immunit y.[8]
