1. The law in New Jersey must recognize immediate family members of homicide victims

as crime victims because it allows them to receive the same rights and protections as the

primary victim (Hasbrouck, 2022). This includes the right to receive information about

the case, access to victim services and compensation, the right to be notified of court

proceedings, and the right to be heard. By recognizing this group of victims, the law

helps ensure they receive the support they need during difficult times.

2. The President's Task Force on Victims of Crime was asked to gather information about

the needs and rights of victims of crime in 1982 when convened by President Ronald

Reagan. This included information on how victims were treated in the criminal justice

system, how they could access resources and services, their challenges, and the laws

protecting their rights (Hasbrouck, 2022). The task force aimed to provide a

comprehensive report on the state of crime victims in the United States to inform policy

and legislation.

3. The benefit of having a VRA (Victims' Rights Amendment) in the U.S. Constitution is

that it would ensure that victims of crime receive the same level of protection regardless

of which state they live in. This would guarantee that all victims have access to the same

rights and services and that all states respect and enforce their rights. It would also help to

provide a consistent framework for criminal justice systems across the country to follow

when dealing with victims of crime.

4. One thing to which the Victims' Rights Amendment entitles victims to the New Jersey

Constitution is the right to be heard in criminal proceedings. This means that victims can

provide their input during court proceedings, such as providing a statement to the court or

testifying in court (Hasbrouck, 2022). Victims also have the right to be notified of court

proceedings and can receive information about the case, as well as access to victim

services and compensation.

5. One right to which victims are entitled by the N.J. Crime Victims' Bill of Rights is the

right to be notified of court proceedings. Victims can receive information about the case

and be informed about court dates, hearings, meetings, or other related events. Victims

can be heard in court proceedings by providing a statement or testifying.

6. A victim advocate is an individual or organization that provides support, advice, and

assistance to victims of crime (Hasbrouck, 2022). Victim advocates can help victims

access resources and services, such as legal assistance, counseling, and financial

assistance. They can also help victims understand their rights and navigate the criminal

justice system. Sometimes, victim advocates can accompany victims to court proceedings

or meetings with law enforcement.

7. A victim impact statement is a document that describes the physical, emotional, and

financial impact that a crime has had on the victim (Hasbrouck, 2022). These statements

are typically written by the victim and submitted to the court before sentencing. The

statement can include details about how the crime has impacted the victim's life, such as
4

the physical and emotional pain they have suffered, the financial losses they have

endured, and any other effects the crime has had. It can also include the victim's thoughts

on the offender's actions and any desired outcome for the sentencing. Victim impact

statements can help the court to understand the full impact that the crime has had on the

victim and to determine an appropriate sentence.

8. A victim can give a victim impact statement in two ways. The first way is by appearing in

court and delivering a verbal statement to the court (Hasbrouck, 2022). The second way

is by submitting a written statement to the court before the sentencing hearing. In either

instance, the statement should focus on the crime's effects on the victim's life.

9. I chose to watch the video clip from "the National Center for Victims of Crime

This video talks about the importance of providing support and services to victims

of crime. It explains the different rights and resources victims have access to and how

they can access them (Tri-County Times, 2019). The video also outlines the challenges

faced by victims of crime and explains the importance of providing support and services

to them. This information was both shocking and eye-opening. I was shocked to learn

that victims of crime often struggle to access the resources and services they need and

that many victims feel isolated and forgotten by the criminal justice system. I had no idea

that the criminal justice system often fails to provide victims with the support they need
5

and deserve. This changed my perception of the criminal justice system, as I had not

realized how many victims are underserved by it.

This video also confirmed my understanding of the importance of providing

support and services to victims of crime (Tri-County Times, 2019). I knew that victims

often suffer from emotional and financial hardship, but I had not realized that victims

could face other challenges, such as difficulty accessing resources and services. This

video has reinforced my belief that victims need to be provided with the support and

resources they need to heal and cope with the trauma of the crime. This information has

impacted me by reaffirming my goal of helping victims of crime. I am more inspired than

ever to seek a profession in the criminal justice system where I can assist crime victims in

getting the resources and assistance they require after watching this film.
