IF YOU'VE NEVER TRIED FILET CROCHET, HERE IS AN EASY GUIDE AND SIMPLE PROJECT TO GET YOU STARTED! BY GWEN BLAKLEY KINSLER BB cnocuerinovensen 035 FILET crochet is an openwork technique which was very popular in the mid 1800s. “Queen Victo- ria, in an act of royal generosity, accepted gifts of Irish crocheted lace for her gowns. Special crochet thread was produced by enterpris- ing textile manufacturers and dur- ing this peak in crochet’s popu- larity, filet crochet was the favor- ite,” (1) “Filet” is the French word meaning “net,” and it consists of open meshes and solid blocks, giv- ing the work a lacy quality. This technique was popular again in the mid-twentieth century; and although it may look intricate and complicated, it is one of the easier crochet techniques; so much so that crocheters can create their own designs with graphs. Using only 2 simple stitches, the chain and double crochet, this technique readily lends itself to creating pictures with the stitches such as animals, religious symbols, flowers or monograms; and it is almost “like drawing with thread. Like a pencil drawing, it uses light and shadow to create an image where there was none before.” (1) “Filet charms the artist in the cro- cheter, as well as acting as a chal- lenge to one’s skill resulting in a real crochet masterpiece to trea- sure.” (4) T have always been partial to filet crochet and have enjoyed it from the earliest years of my cro- cheting life. I still have one of my first filet projects from a 1976 Family Circle Magazine: a shawl with flower motif made of kite string (see photo on page 40). (5) For best results, filet crochet is done with fine cotton threads and traditionally in white or ecru color. Ranging from size 3 to size 100, the finest available, threads require steel crochet hooks to cre- ate the series of open spaces and solid blocks in combinations to create pictorial designs. Like any kind of crochet, the thread must fit the hook: the larger the design or picture, the finer the thread must be. Probably the most sought after pattern is that of “The Last Sup- per” charted for filet crochet. This pattern is available at: wwrvelacis, com/catalog/data/b_crochet_heml “Like most ‘facts' about [Alet] crochet, there are many theories as to why itis mostly done in the color white. The most popular is that white has a religious signifi- cance because of its association with holiness and purity. Since nuns first taught it, this seems a logical theory. Other reasons for the use of white can also be put forth. Cotton is naturally white, and dyeing is expensive. Also, since many of the articles made of filet crochet are used as home decorations, and since white blends with all colors, the choice of white is a natural.” (1) Designs charted on graph pa- per are provided for the crocheter to follow. The design chart will usually include a note direct ing one to follow the chart from right to left for the right side and from left to ight for the wrong side, “Since filet squares all blend into each other, the last stitch of ‘one square isthe first stitch of the “next. Therefore, an isolated square may consist of 4 stitches (2 sides to the square and 2 stitches in the center), but on a chart, each square requires only 3 stitches be~ cause it will share its lat stitch as the first stiteh of the next square.” 4 cnocien novenaex 2008 (2) While fol- lowing the chart, it is best to mark off each row with a pencil as it is completed or use a magnetic board to keep track of progress. To forma space, work two chains and skip over two stitches of the previous row. An open square or mesh on the chart oF graph indicates a space. Filing the space with two double cro chet stitches creates a solid mesh or block in the designs. On the chart, a solid square or *X” indi- cates a block. ‘My biggest earning curve with filet crochet was when I took the Design Crochet Correspon- dence Course and learned that it is essential that filet crochet have ‘two double crochets in each block and two chains in each space! However, since then I have seen other sources that suggest a space can consist of only one chain and «block of only one double crochet. “However, ifyou desire a fulles, heavier texture to your work, the double mesh crochet stitch should be used instead of the regular double crochet. This stitch gives more definition to the design. It is worked in a slightly different manner than the regular double crochet stitch as follows: Yo hook, insert hook in next ch, pull thread through (3 loops on hook), yo hook and pull thread through only 1 ch, yo hook and draw through 3 remaining chs on hook.” 2) “Once finished, the crochet ‘work may require an outside edge to give it body and to prevent it from stretching, Slip stitch or sin- gle crochet will sufice, but there are also many elegant edgings to choose from. Blocking is neces- sary to acquire the proper size, to make the piece lay flat, and to give ita neat, pressed appear ance.” (2) Blocking can easily be accomplished by using steel pins to pin the piece evenly all around the sides and then covering it with a damp cloth for atleast twenty four hours or until the cloth is dry. IT’S REALLY LESS COMPLICATED THAN YOU THINK, AND PROPER SHAPING CAN PRODUCE RESULTS THAT ARE MORE FLATTERING AND COMFORTABLE. TRY thinking of each piece of a garment as a simple square or rectangle with stitches that are simply increased or decreased at the edges to create shaping. If you can work 2 stitches into one stitch, you already know how to increase, or add 1 stitch. And if you know how to work 2 stitch- es together, you know how to decrease 1 stitch, or subtract 1 stitch, SLEEVES To shape a crocheted sleeve, you simply increase stitches at each edge, at regular intervals, to widen the shape from the wrist to the armhole. Then, you work even to desized length for a drop sleeve, or shape the cap per writ- ten instructions. If, at first, you have difficulty identifying the in- creases made at the ends of rows, place a plastic marker on each increase row, so you can quickly count your number of stitches and rows as you work. ARMHOLES AND NECKLINES To shape curved armholes and necklines, center stitches are skipped to begin the opening, then stitches are gradually decreased (by working stitches together) on ei ther side of the initial opening to create a curve. I never slip stitch across those skipped stitches. Slip stitching on 1 side of a neckline or armhole may save a few seconds of time, but you pay dearly in terms of comfort. ‘The amount of comfort is greater when a neckline is divided for a jacket or a placket opening than for a crewneck sweater when one side of the neck has skipped stitches and the other side of a jacket begins with slip stitches. To test this method, take a few min- utes to make 2 small swatches. SLIP STITCH SWATCH Row 1: Using hook and yarn of your choice, ch 22, de in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across, um. Note that Rows 6 & 7 of each swatch create the curve for the neckline or armbole opening. Asyou can see, not only do your swatches for the simulated neck line look different, they feel dif- ferent. The frst 5 stitches of the Slip Stitch Swatch are firm and have litle give, while the Skipped Stitches Swatch has more elasticity and thus, is less restrictive and feels more comfortable on your body. FLARES AND RUFFLES Our Ribbed Collar Cardi- gan (shown on page 54) features a flared peplum and collar which are shaped using a non-tradition- al method. Both of these flared pieces are worked from side to side with half of each row being worked in double erochet, while the other half of the same row is worked in half double crochet which creates a flare. This shap- ing method can be easily adapted to shape a skirt or other garments, ‘Try working a jacket, using this method, to the armhole, then work back and forth across the length of this piece and work even from the armhole up instead of side by side and you'll create a flattering, so- phisticated shape. DECREASING BULK Crochet garments always fit and feel best on the body when bullcis decreased as you work the shaping or seaming, At ends of rows, you'l significantly decrease edge bulk when working in double or half double crochet as follows: ch 1 (does not count asa stiteh), work, the first stitch of the next row as a double or half double crochet. ‘The Ind advantage to this technique is that when garment pieces are assembled, the ends of rows do not have a gap between the turning chains and the next stitch and are much neater, SEAMING TECHNIQUES The seaming technique of choice for a garment also affects shape, drape and comfort. Woven seams are less bulky than are seams Woven Seam that are backstitched. Determine which seaming method best meets the needs of the yarn used and the design of the garment. For exam- pleya child’ jacket is likely to un- dergo more rough and tumble wear than the garment for an adult. For most children’s garments, a back stitch seam may best fill your needs because this method is strong and durable, Backstitching creates a sturdy, firm seam that can take a lot of wear and tear. On the other hand, a womaris jacket, vest or jacket is less likely to be submitted to the same abuse as a child’s garment and may be finished with a woven seam which is less sturdy, but reduces the bulk and has more give than a back- stitch seam. This method is a particularly good choice for light weight yarns. NovEMGER 2000 cROENETMAGAZIMECOM — 5B ‘Garment pieces can also be cro- cheted together using either slip stitch or single crochet. When the stitch of choice (usually single ero- het) is worked with the wrong sides facing, the seam is raised and 54 cnocwer:novemacr 2008 se ah HON purposely becomes an exterior de~ sign element meant to enhance the overall appearance of a garment. When the seam is meant to be on the interior ofa garment, the best choice would be a slip stitch rather than single crochet to reduce bulk. A crochet seam has some degree of elasticity and is 2 good choice for adult garments. The main draw- back to using this technique is all too obvious should a chain become snagged and the whole seam n= ravels before one’s eyes.
