The focus of this lesson is the verb "to come" in Dutch

Topic 1: How to use "to come"

Sentence from the lesson:

Wil je komen?
"Will you come?"

1. Supposing you want to go, you will say, Ja, ik kom! That means "Yes I'm coming!"
Let's break down this answer:
Ja which is simply "Yes."
ik, which is "I" in Dutch.
kom, which is the present tense form of the verb komen.

2. In Dutch, komen is exactly the same as "to come." It is a very common verb that you
should be careful not to mix up with gaan, which only means "to go to," as we've seen
before.
Let's look at another situation we can use komen in. If you are organizing a party, for
example, you can confirm that someone is coming by asking them:
Kom je naar het feest vanavond?
"Are you coming to the party tonight?"
To answer this question, you can add something after this verb, as in Ja, ik kom met
wat vrienden. Here you said "Yes, I am coming with some friends." If you want to say
that you're coming with your boyfriend or girlfriend, you would say Ja, ik kom met mijn
vriend. "Yes, I'm coming with my boyfriend," or Ja, ik kom met mijn vriendin. "Yes, I'm
coming with my girlfriend."

3. The verb komen is also often used as an order or as motivational advice, as in Kom
op! "Come on!" Or Kom hier! That is, "Come here!" You can add the word weer
"again," or terug "back" after komen to create sentences like "I'll come back again
tomorrow," it is just Ik kom morgen weer terug!

Tip

Just like in English you can use the verb komen to say "Come in!" if you're inviting someone to
enter a room, for example. In this case it will be Kom binnen! That means "Come in!"
