5.2 Introduction

The MWD adopts mature and reliable positive mud pulse technology. It transmits stand pipe signals
and other data by radio on the ground. There is no need to lay out cables, which make it easy and
convenient for operation.

The mud pulse MWD adopts Bus technology. Natural gamma and Azimuth gamma are optional, and
then Depth system should also be used cooperatively to expand application range of the MWD.

We provide three series of mud pulse MWD as below:

5.3 Working Principle

The Pulser acquires related down-hole data, and the acquired data is encoded into certain series
data string via control unit. The data string controls the movement of electromagnetic valve, and the
circulating mud makes the main valve poppet move synchronously, thus, mud flow area between
the poppet and block ring is controlled. When the poppet is up, the mud in drill string passes
through the block ring smoothly; when the poppet is down, mud flow area reduces, and then a
positive mud pressure pulse is generated inside the drill string.

The pressure sensor on the mud pipeline acquires mud pressure signal with certain frequency and
transmits the signal wirelessly. Wireless transceiver connected with PC (LHE1132) receives and
processes the pump pressure signal. The signal is decoded into data by DEES software and the
results are transmitted to driller's display (LHE6023) wirelessly.

NOTE: Gamma can be configured as optional according to user’s demand.

5.4.2.1 Pulser

As shown in Figure 5-8a, when Pulser does not receive signal from Probe, the servo head (7)
will be released and seal the mud channel inside Pulser, then the high flowing mud in drill
collar will generate reverse thrust(5) to make poppet(3) lifted up. At this moment, the spring
(6) is compressed, which make the mud area between poppet and orifice(2) increase, the
pressure inside drill pipe is small.

As shown in Figure 5-8b, when Pulser receives the signal from Probe, the electromagnetic
valve (8) is powered to compress the spring (6), the servo head(7) will be lifted up and hold
on for some time, the mud will flow into valve cylinder through the channel, then the
pressure inside and outside the tool will be balanced. And then the spring will be released
and poppet (3) goes down, the mud area between poppet(3) and orifice(2) will decrease,

5.4.2.2 Battery

The 24Ah Battery pack is composed of eight 3.6V high-temperature batteries connecting in
series to provide power for downhole tools. Double-battery mode also can be adopted to
improve the drilling time and make full use of remaining capacity in the battery.

5.4.2.3 GR

Gamma is composed by gamma sensor and electronic assembly. The Gamma sensor consists
of high temperature, high anti-vibration NaI crystal and photomultiplier. When nuclides
(uranium, thorium and potassium) in formation produce nuclear decay and emit gamma rays,
part of the gamma rays are detected by gamma sensor and converted into electrical pulse
signals. The electronic assembly measures and process these signals to obtain the natural
gamma radioactivity strength in formation. According to the theories of geophysical,
geochemical, sedimentary rock, oil-gas migration, correlation of reservoirs and rock
formations, together with other logging parameters, lithology and reservoirs of the target
formation could be speculated.

© 2019 Liuhe Greatness Technology Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Website: www.liu-he.com Page 13 of 124
Mud Pulse Measurement While Drilling REV.:c

When drilling with GR, do not add potassium, Barium or other radioactive additive into mud.
Otherwise, it will cause GR counting value on the high side. If barite is added into mud, GR
value will be on the low side, but the variation is not obvious.

6.4.4 Pull out of Hole (POOH)

6.4.4.1 Preparation

According to the actual situation of the field operation. Assemble fishing tools and check tool
status accordingly to ensure POOH job successfully completed.

6.4.4.2 Steps

1) Use winch to send fishing rod in through non-magnetic drill collar.

2) After the fishing assembly of the fishing rod joints with the fishing head of the tool, clock
wisely rotate fishing rod.

3) Make sure the fishing assembly and fishing head joint with each other well, and then
execute fishing operation.

4) Use hook of winch to hang ring of fishing rod, lift up slowly.

5) After fishing head comes out, use hoisting tool to hold the tool.

6) Put down slowly. Separate fishing assembly and fishing head.

7) Use winch hook to hook up hoisting tool to lift up slowly.

8) Lift tool string out of non-magnetic drill collar. Move tool sting to the slope entrance. Use
winch hook to continuously lower down, at the same time, put tool string on the ramp
until to the ground, and then stop hoisting.

NOTE: Lower down slowly to avoid impact damage of the tool.

9) Place tools on the stand to begin cleaning and assembly.

6.5 Post-drilling Check

(1) Clean the tool surface and inspect for any visible damage.

(2) Check all external O-rings, replace them after each job. The O-rings must be the same size
with the ones of respective sub.
(3) After O-rings are replaced, silicon grease must be daubed.

6.6 Fish down-hole tool

(1) When the downhole tool failure occurs, the well team fishes the tool out directly without
pulling out of hole.

(2) When drilling block or fish occurs, fish up the down-hole measuring part in time to minimize
the loss.

Mud Pulse Measurement While Drilling REV.:c

(3) When fishing the down-hole tool, cable winch shall be used. Install top and lower sheave on
the drill floor. Connect the fisher with the weight bar and then lower the fishing section down
gradually by winch. When it is estimated near to the bottom, speed up properly and fish up.

6.7 Quality Control

6.7.1 Requirements for Mud

1) Sand content of mud should be less than 1%, the less the better.

2) There should not contain bubbles in mud. If the gas in bubbles is compressed, it may
reduce pressure difference produced by Pulser. When there are bubbles, add defoamer,
use degasser or start pump for circulating two circles until bubbles are cleared.

3) Mud viscosity should less than 60 seconds (50cp), otherwise it may directly affect the
quality of signal transmission.
4) Do not add lost circulation materials or other large particles, since these materials will
damage or block downhole tools.
5) If the PH value of the mud is less than 7, the tool will be eroded by acidic mud. Thus,
the tool life will be affected.

6) The solid content and plastic viscosity of mud should not be high. Too high solid content
will lead to the solids accumulation in the Muleshoe sleeve and orifice, then finally result
in the block of the poppet. Too high plastic viscosity will lead to signal attenuation. In
that case, it is difficult for the tool to work in the deep well.

7) If need to change mud parameters, inform field engineers in advance to get approval.

8) When drilling, mud must go through vibrating screen and desander to make sure drilling
fluid is filtered.

6.7.2 Requirements for Mud Pump

Performance of mud pump should be stable and reliable with good mud circulation. Pump
efficiency should be above 90% and effective displacement in borehole should be accurate.
Otherwise, it will affect performance of MWD. Use pump dampeners with check of dampener
gas pressure.

6.7.3 Other Requirements

1) Filter of drill pipe must be used, in case large particles fall into pipe to block or damage
tools, which will cause abnormal performance.

2) If use check valve (float valve), the valve must be added below the tool string, in case
pump blocked mud flow back into drill assembly to cause running-off-key.

© 2019 Liuhe Greatness Technology Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Website: www.liu-he.com Page 53 of 124
Mud Pulse Measurement While Drilling REV.:c

3) The OD of centralizer should match the ID of non-magnetic drill collar, and the OD is
1mm less than or equal to the ID.

4) When connect directional connector or perform key-setting, it should be done at

wellhead and forbidden to do in rat hole.

5) Before put tool into borehole, measure BHA angle difference. From the reference mark
line on the MWD tool, look down from the top along with borehole. Clock wisely measure
the different angle (0-360°) between the calibration line and the reference mark line,
which is BHA angle difference.

Figure 6-59 BHA angle difference.

6) Gas cut in the mud

For the high pressure oil and gas zone, there is gas in the mud, and then the signal
affected greatly. The user needs to add defoamer to recycle the mud until the gas is
removed.

6.7.4 Effect Factors for Measurement Precision

1) The system error of tool itself.

2) BHA (Bottom Hole Assembly) may affect precision.

3) Centralizers of the tool string may affect precision.

4) The accurate measurement procedures are not well followed.

© 2019 Liuhe Greatness Technology Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Website: www.liu-he.com Page 54 of 124
Mud Pulse Measurement While Drilling REV.:c

5) Length of non-magnetic drill collar may affect precision. When use MWD in different
area, different inclination and azimuth require different length of non-magnetic drill
collar. It is better to place probe in the middle of drill collar.

【1 Drill bit; 2 Bit connector; 3 Non-magnetic Drill collar; 4 Magnetism measuring tool;

5 Steel drill collar; 6 Geomagnetic field line; 7 Interference magnetic field line

Figure 6-60 Working Principle Diagram of Non-magnetic Drill Collar

The interference lines of magnetic field will not affect the tool, because non-magnetic
drill collar provide non-interference magnetic environment and ensure the measured
data is the real ground magnetic field information.

6) Magnetic disturbance may affect precision. If the difference between measured magnetic
field value and local magnetic field value is less than ± 5%, the measure azimuth is
correct, otherwise, it is improbable.

8.4.3 Working Mode

The working mode indicates one set of parameters, including coding mode, pulser width,
data transmission and so on. It is allowed to pre-set four groups of such kind of parameter
combination, that is four working modes (only Mode #1 is available at present) .

The MWD system encode, decode and transmit data by making agreement on working mode
and data series between surface system and downhole tools. When downhole tools are not
consistent with the setting in surface equipment, there will be decoding error. Therefore,
complete setting in computer before drilling, and make a copy of setting into Probe to keep
the setting consistency, which is called unification.

Click Set->Work mode->Work mode, and then the working mode dialog will pop out as
Figure 8-29. User could set data sequence, precision, speed, repeat times and other
parameters here. In the meantime, the working mode could be set and perform unification
for the connected equipment.

Figure 8-29 Working Mode Interface

The parameters in Working Mode are as the following:

1) Performance: there are two kinds: Power saving and Fast. Only Power saving is
available at present. Fast is still in progress.

© 2019 Liuhe Greatness Technology Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Website: www.liu-he.com Page 74 of 124
Mud Pulse Measurement While Drilling REV.:c

2) Pulse width: there are 1.0sec and 1.5sec. Small pulse width indicates fast transmission
speed, but with more power consumption and small signal strength, and vice versa.
During actual operation, select pulse width according to well depth, mud and other
situation. 1.5sec is commonly used.

3) Send Pulse Sequence, include one Pump Stop Seq. and two Pump Start Seq. If
vibration sensor is off, Probe will only send one pump stop sequence when it is power on,
and only send pump start sequence A and B during other time. A and B circulate sending
data according to defined times. If vibration sensor is on, pump stop sequence and pump
start sequence A and B perform cooperatively. Refer to 8.4.6 Probe setting for vibration
sensor start.

➢ When start vibration sensor function, the measured static data of pump-stop will be
sent according to Pump Stop Seq when pump is start. If only transmit pump-
stopping in Send Pulse Sequence is checked, then the Probe will not upload data
after sending Pump Stop Seq, and only when stop pump and start pump again,
another group of Pump Stop Seq will be uploaded. If only transmit pump-
stopping is not checked, after sending Pump Stop Seq, it will send data of Pump
Start Seq A and Pump Start Seq B according to the defined times.

Notice: When start vibration sensor function, the each pump stopping time should
be over than 1min at least, and the time set in static measurement delay should be
over than 120s, which could keep the accuracy of measured static data when pump
is stopped.

➢ When vibration sensor function is not started, once Probe is power on, it begins to
send pump stop sequence. After sending is finished, Pump Start Seq A and Pump
Start Seq B circulate sending data according to the defined times.

➢ There are 7 series in pump stop seq, Pump Start Seq A and Pump Start Seq B.
Each sequence could be selected as current one. There are 3 fixed sequences and 4
variable sequences. These 7 sequences could be set up by the two data tables in the
left corner of the interface.

⚫ The first data table displays the fixed sequence, which are pre-set before
delivery. User could not modify them. The details of each sequence could be
viewed from the drop-down list.

⚫ The second data table displays the variable sequence. User could modify them
freely to control coding speed, precision, power consumption, sequence of
sending data and contents, etc.

⚫ Click Add to insert one row at the end.

⚫ Click Del to delete the selected row.

⚫ Click Up or Down to move the selected row.

⚫ Click the selected cell for edition.

© 2019 Liuhe Greatness Technology Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Website: www.liu-he.com Page 75 of 124
Mud Pulse Measurement While Drilling REV.:c

⚫ The first column is item number that could not be edited.

⚫ The second column is parameter name, user could select related parameter.
⚫ The third column is sending precision and take pulse number as unit. The
available range is 1~4 pulses. The more pulse number for sending one data, the
higher of sending precision and more time is needed.
⚫ The forth column is to set times for resending.

⚫ The fifth column is to set if verification is needed.

After the above information are modified and confirmed, click Write Device or Write PC to
write into device or PC. Or click unanimous and the computer will automatically write mode
data into computer and Probe.

4) Tool face threshold: user could specify Tool face switch max and tool face switch
min. Usually they are set as 5. It is magnetic tool face when it is less than 5, while it is
gravity tool face when it is over than 5. It surely could be set to be other value according
to actual need. When the max and the min are set as the same, there is no delay range.
If inclination is right close to the set max ad min at this time, tool face will frequently
change between magnetic high side and gravity high side.

5) Static measurement delay(Measurement time-lapse): when pump stopping is

detected, delay certain time to start measurement and record of pump stopping data.
Default is 10s.
6) Pump start time-lapse: this is the to delay sending pulse after pump is started. It is
mainly affect decoding of pump stopping sequence. Default is 20s.
7) Current work mode: select work mode of Probe.
8) Transmit command mode: When the Probe is downhole working, choose to receive
command from surface or not.
9) Read Device: read working mode data from subs.
10) Read PC: read working mode data from PC.
11) Write Device: write current data into subs.
12) Write PC: write current working mode into PC.
13) Unanimous: make data synchronization in PC and subs to keep them consistent and
correct decoding.

8.4.4 Data Correction

Data correction is mainly designed for tool face and azimuth. Click Set->Angle difference
to input correction value and decide if the values are in calculation, as shown in Figure 8-31.

For tool face measurement, because of assembly, there might be tool angle difference (IMO)
and assembly angle difference (DAO). The following equation is used in the software for
correction:

Correction tool face=measured tool face-(IMO+DAO)

For azimuth measurement, since it is magnetic azimuth that the tool measures. But there is
magnetic declination between magnetic north and geographical north, therefore customer
need to know the local magnetic declination of this year to calculate the geographical north.
East magnetic declination(take east as positive direction to get magnetic direction. For
example, if the local magnetic north is in the east 5° of geographical north, then the east
magnetic declination is +5°; if magnetic north is in the west 5° of geographical north, then
the east magnetic declination is -5° ) is used in the software. The calculation equation is as
the following:
Geographical azimuth=magnetic azimuth (measured by the tool)+east magnetic declination

© 2019 Liuhe Greatness Technology Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Website: www.liu-he.com Page 77 of 124
Mud Pulse Measurement While Drilling REV.:c

If angle difference is not needed, set IMO, DAO, magnetic declination as 0.

Figure 8-31 IMO, DMO & Declination setting

Gamma Correction Coefficient:

After MWD is assembled, before drilling, read calibration data of GR probe. Gamma Serial
No., Gamma Bottom, Gamma Slope are the calibrated data read from gamma probe,
they could not be modified. EnvirCompensation is set under gamma probe and could be
modified after put into borehole. MudCount should deduct gamma count in mud, and set
according to actual situation. The default value is 0. RigDistance is the distance between
gamma probe and drilling bit.

Dist Between Node and Drill:

Set distance from tool to the drill bit. The set parameters serves for depth measurement.

font, indicating that this Probe need to be returned to us for re-calibration.

2) Address

Record current test specific location. This requires manual input, or it could not enter the test
phase.

3) Probe placement explanation (Attitude deviation)

⚫ In one direction, it is not allowed to make changes.

⚫ Probe rolling test(Four directions):

It is allowed to re-set attitude deviation. Difference between Probe placement angle and
the actual angle , INC, AZ, GHS / MTF setting range is 0-5. When the setting is beyond
this range, the Clue dialog will show in Figure 10-11 to remind user that attitude
deviation in INC is incorrectly set, and the corresponding font will turn to red.
