Digital transformation that’s
grounded in the real world
Let’s talk

When you meet one of our digital experts, their boots might look a
little worn out. That’s because their expertise is grounded in the
day-to-day realities of mining. We combine this first-hand experience
with tailored digital solutions to solve tough problems and deliver
real value. So whatever stage you’re at, we’ll work with you to create a
step-by-step plan to help you get where you want to be. Even if we
have to change our boots along the way.

You think big, we get practical

Beneath the surface: mining’s

technology transformation
By Andrew Milner, senior vice president and chief
transformation officer, Teck
Technology is changing the world. And few things are
changing as fast as mining.

This may sound like an oxymoron. From the outside,

mining can seem eternal and unchanging; after all,
it is humanity’s first and oldest industry. But look
closer, and you’ll see that technological advancement
is driving a sea change.

At Teck, one of Canada’s leading mining companies,

teams of developers, programmers, data engineers,
and data scientists have been deployed across our
operations, all leveraging digital technology to
enhance performance. The transformation this is
creating is so profound that we expect mining to
change more in the next 10 years than in the past 100.

This is happening for two main reasons.

The human element is crucial

for digitalisation success
Danish multinational engineering company
FLSmidth has historically taken a lead in the digital
transformations of equipment across the mineral
processing value chain, but it has also forged a path
in using digitalisation to improve processes.

The company believes that when it comes to using

energy usage, it is crucial to combine the power of
both digitalised physical assets and data-led decision-
making solutions.

Rebecca Siwale, global director of performance and

helped the company build out its digital services.

Digitalising the way to net zero

through collaboration
“I think digitalisation often is an enabler,”
Tarja Strahlman, Venture Lead, OREN for Shell, said.
“You’re utilising

Using data to drive action is, in part, the philosophy

behind OREN, a venture created in collaboration by
Shell and IBM, which leverages the OREN Data

In particular, more and more mining operators are

DIGITALISATION OVERVIEW

Oyu Tolgoi is one of the largest mining operations

on Earth, with scale and mine life beyond most
projects. From the outset, this project was devised
using a cutting-edge planning approach that was
created in partnership with ProudFoot, a leading
global operations consultant. This integrated
planning process vastly improved safety and
project outcomes, allowing working schedules to
be finalised many shifts in advance of requirement.

The launch of the Mining Magazine Intelligence (MMI) suite

of research reports is a natural progression for Aspermont
into the research space, leveraging Mining Magazine’s 110-year
history and following the trail blazed
by the Mining Journal Intelligence unit.

The MMI research focuses on the key technology and innovation proliferating
the mining space, focusing on the leading mines, miners and suppliers.
As with Mining Magazine, MMI will take a global view of the market.

The inaugural Mining Magazine Intelligence Automation Report provides a

comprehensive review of automation within the mining industry. It collates interviews with
industry leaders and profiles on mines at various stages of automation to help stakeholders
understand the operators and suppliers at the leading edge of this technology.

The Digitalisation Report will be a comprehensive review of the software, hardware and
infrastructure in place across the leading mines and development projects in the industry
and will attempt to quantify how these technologies are being deployed, how they are
changing operations, the next steps for innovation and, wherever possible, how much is
being invested.

For its Future Fleets Report, the MMI research team is building a database of the most
innovative and advanced mobile fleets either in action or planned for delivery. The report
will take a particular interest in the energy requirements of an evolving fleets market that is
feeling the pressure from its clients to assist in meeting increasingly strict emissions targets.

The Exploration Report will take a wholistic view of the exploration space, reviewing the
latest technology and innovation in play for both greenfields and brownfields exploration
to see what that tells us about the nature of the challenge for modern-day explorers and
build a picture of the solutions.

scheduled for 2023. The CPT includes two main crushing
and conveying transport complexes for ore and waste
overburden, as well as a dry magnetic separation (SMS)
unit. The rock mass will be transported by dump trucks
along optimally short intra-pit routes. Crushed ore and
overburden will be lifted to the surface by inclined belt
conveyors. From the pit perimeter, the ore will go to the
transfer and storage warehouse, and the overburden
to the dump. The use of conveyors instead of dump
trucks will reduce the cost of transporting the rock mass,
as well as reduce emissions of exhaust gases from heavy
equipment into the atmosphere.
