The loss of jobs and persistent unemployment in the industrial countries is due mainly to
changes in technology. It is thought to be misleading to blame job losses on the shift of corporations
from the industrial countries to the Third World.
The present technological developments have been compared to a Third Industrial Revolution.
The first, coming in the 19th century, was characterized by the steam engine and the use of coal. In the
1920s the second emerged with the use of oil and the electro dynamo. The third, and present one, is
driven by computers, biotechnology and information technology.
However, there can be seen weaknesses in the newest of industrial revolutions. The technology
is advancing so fast and productivity is rising so fast that we are left with a big problem. Because of
the loss in jobs, caused largely by this new technology, there will not be enough people with money to
buy all these products.
Technology has definitely enhanced our standard of living, even our quality of life. But as the
capacity to produce expands and the lack of purchasing power and consequent demand diminish, there
can be overproduction and recession, and what happens to our standard of living?

shown that people who feel happy and relaxed are healthier and have better relationships. Laughter
yoga is a series of exercises which teaches you to laugh for no reason. You don't need to have a sense
of humour, or understand funny jokes. You just have to laugh. When you do laughter yoga in a group,
you laugh and do yoga breathing, so that you increase the amount of oxygen in your body. Soon the
laughter exercises turn into real laughter. After a laughter yoga class, you feel calm and relaxed, but
also happy and full of energy. Laughter yoga was developed by a medical doctor from India, Dr
Madan Kataria. He started the first laughter yoga classes in a park in Mumbai in 1995 with just five
people, and now there are over six thousand laughter clubs in sixty different countries.
Companies who have run laughter yoga workshops find that they have advantages for both employers

experts, the main reason for this is that most people fail to set priorities about what to do first. They get
tied down by trivial, time-consuming matters and never complete the important ones.
One simple solution often used by those at the top is to keep lists of tasks to be accomplished

day to access progress. Not only is this an effective way to manage time, but it also serves to give

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don’t talk. Gestures are the “silent language” of
every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show that we want to say. It is
important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood. In the United
States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If
the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other’s
arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet friends with hugs. Space is important to Americans.
When two people talk to each other, they stand two and half feet away at an angel, so they are not facing
each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back
to have space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me” or “Excuse me”.
Americans like to look the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means
you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is not polite.
Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing. If you don’t know what to do, the safest

American foods began to affect the rest of the world. American emphasis on convenient and rapid
consumption is best represented in fast foods such as hamburgers, French fries, and soft drinks. By the
1960s and 1970s fast foods became one of America's strongest exports as franchises for Me Donald's and
Burger King spread through Europe and other parts of the world, including Russia and China. Traditional
meals cooked at home and consumed at a leisurely pace gave way to quick lunches and dinners eaten on
the run as other countries imitated American cultural patterns.
By the late 20lh century Americans had become more conscious of their diets, eating more poultry,
fish and vegetables, and fewer eggs and less beef. Cooks began to rediscover many world cuisines in
forms closer to their original. In California, chefs combined fresh fruits and vegetables available with
ingredients and spices borrowed from immigrant kitchens to create an innovative cooking style that was

Read the following passage and mark letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of
the questions that follow.
How can scientists predict earthquakes? Earthquakes are not scattered anywhere but happen in certain
areas. They happen in places where pieces of the earth’s surface meet. This pattern causes them to shake
the same places many times. For example, earthquakes often occur on the west-coast of North and South
America, around the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast of Asia.
Another way to predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth’s surface, like a sudden drop of
water level in the ground. Some people say animals can predict earthquakes. Before earthquakes people
have seen chickens sitting in trees, fish jumping out of water, snakes leaving their joles and other animals
acting strangely.
After an earthquake happens, people can die from lack of food, water, and medical supplies. The amount
of destruction caused by an earthquake depends on where it happens, what time it happens, and how
strong it is. It also depends on types of building, soil conditions and population. Of the 6000 earthquakes
in the earth each year, only about fiften cause great damage and many deaths.

of the questions.
In the earliest times, children got their education directly from parents and other adults. They learned
mainly skills for survival. Adults passed down this knowledge through spoken language. Eventually,
cultures around the world began inventing writing. As societies developed, they set up schools to teach
reading, writing, maths and other subjects. The first schools were usually just for boys. Most of the
students came from rich and powerful families. Often the purpose of their education was religious
training. In many cultures, the religious leaders formed the highest level of society. Some schools had
other purposes as well. Many schools focused on military training. Sometimes youths attended special
schools to learn the art of public speaking. These skills were meant to help them become future leaders.
Most girls received their education at home. They learned cooking, sewing and other useful skills. Over
time, education became available to more people, not just the rich and powerful. The governments of
some countries set up public systems of education in the 1800s. More schools opened to girls. During the

How can scientist predict earthquakes? Earthquakes are not scattered anywhere but happen in
certain areas. They happen in places of the earth’s surface meet. This pattern causes them to shake the
same places many times. For example, earthquakes often occur on the west - coast of North and South
America, around the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast ofAsia.
Another way to predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth’s surface like a sudden drop
of water level in the ground. Some people say animals can predict earthquakes. Before earthquakes
people have seen chickens sitting in trees, fish jumping out of water, snakes leaving their holes and other
animals acting strangely.
After an earthquake happens, people can die from lack of food, water and medical supplies. The
amount of destruction caused by an earthquake depends on where it happens, and how strong it is. It also
depends on types of buildings, soil conditions and population. Of the 6000 earthquakes in the earth each
year, only about fifteen cause great damage and many deaths.

People commonly complain that they never have enough time to accomplish tasks. The hours and
minutes seem to slip away before many planned chores get done. According to time management
experts, the main reason for this is that most people fail to set priorities about what to do first. They get
tied down by trivial, time-consuming matters and never complete the important ones.
One simple solution often used by those at the top is to keep lists of tasks to be accomplished
daily. These lists order jobs from most essential to least essential and are checked regularly through the
day to access progress. Not only is this an effective way to manage time, but it also serves to give
individuals a much-deserved sense of satisfaction over their achievements. People who do not keep lists

climbed back into their moon landing craft. Next day the landing craft roared as the men took off the
moon. They joined Michael Collins in the spaceship that wait for them above the moon. Then they were

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water.
Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. However, acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage
have made many sources of water undrinkable.
Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is
one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare
species that do not exist anywhere else in the world. Yet, they are being destroyed by the massive
volumes of industrial effluent which pour into the lake every day. Even though laws have been made, the
governments do not have the power to enforce them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The
Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world's water surface, but it is the dumping ground for 50% of all
marine pollution. Almost sixteen countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles offshore.
