Exposure Index Technical Guidebook

About Exposure Index

The Exposure Index is an index that complies with
IEC62494-1 issued in 2008 to show the exposure dose
received by the detector. Using this index means the
exposure dose received by detectors can be compared
to a common scale for different manufacturers.
CS-7 calculates and displays the Exposure Index
(hereafter, EI), Target Exposure Index (hereafter, EIT)
and Deviation Index (hereafter, DI) for each exposure,
and can send in a DICOM tag. EI is used to manage
image quality by using the exposure dose received by Calculation of Deviation Index
detectors, and is not used to manage patient exposure According to IEC62494-1, image quality should be

the target value (EIT), rather than the EI value itself.

image processing (Region of Interest)" should be the 3 100% (double dose)
same, the Region of Interest (hereafter, ROI) that uses
automatic grayscale processing is used as the Relevant
Image Region. The Value of Interest is also based on
the standard signal value calculated using histogram
analysis after setting ROI using the same automatic
grayscale processing.

Examples of EI, EIT, DI Displays
CS-7 can display EI, EIT and DI for each exposure as
follows.

Precautions

1) Please use EI, EIT and DI only as a guide for image

quality management.

2) If ROI recognition is not implemented properly, the

correct value may not be calculated. Also, if ROI
area has been changed, the value of EI and DI will
be recalculated.

3) The value of EI, EIT and DI will not change even

after changing the S value or G value. However, if
parts have been changed, the standard signal value of
the relevant parts is used to re-calculate the values.

4) Values specified by manufacturers are included with

each part for EIT, but please use these numbers only
as reference values. In addition, these values may
change depending on academic and other trends.
CS-7 can change EIT to any value.

5) EI, EIT and DI are not displayed for mammography

and linac images.
