STRESS CORROSION
(form of intergranular corrosion)
It occurs when tensile stresses
and corrosive environment occur
concurrently.
Failure can occur well below the
yield point for the material.
Failure can be of the brittle type
(without warning) and can occur
under internal stress only.

If possible, start with GVI. If interval not practical, select DET. If interval

Apart from cost aspects, the choice of inspection level has a direct
effect on the detectable crack length and the repeat interval. This is

The basic detectable crack length has to be adjusted due to the following:
LH
LVIS : visible crack length LVIS
LDET = LVIS + LH
© AIRBUS S.A.S. All rights reserved. Confidential and proprietary document.
LDET
Using the selected value of LDET , the inspection threshold and repeat
intervals are determined for the selected inspection method e.g. GVI
When DET inspection is not appropriate, the use of NDT method has to
be considered to determine if detectability can be improved sufficiently to
achieve practical intervals.
