What is NOVI (Normalized Difference

Vegetation Index)?
Normalized Difference VegetationIndex (NOVI) quantifies vegetation by measuring the
difference between near-infrared (which vegetation strongly reflects) and red lght (which
vegetation absorbs).

NOVI always ranges from -1to +1.

For example, when you have negative values,it's highlylikely that it's water. On the other hand,if
you have an NOVI value close to +1,there's a high possibility thatit's dense greenleaves. But when
NOVIis close to zero, there aren't green leaves and it could even be an urbanized area.

Values close to zero (-0.1to0.1) generally correspond to barren areas of rock, sand,or

snow. ow, positive values represent shrub and grassland (approximately 0.2 to 0.4),while
highvalues indicate temperate and tropicalrainforests (values approaching )j T

How do you calculate NDVI?

As shown below, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NOVI) uses the
NIR
and red cha nnels in its formu l a.
