The bells rang once more as Jarvis Christian College hosted the 5th Annual Dr. John D. mangram ministers Conference and Bell ringer service Award & scholarship luncheon on April 12th and 13th. For more than 50 years, Dr. John D. mangram, Professor Emeritus, has trained some of the most dynamic men and women in ministry, earning him the title, The Teacher of Preachers. The theme of the Conference this year was: Preaching in real Time. The focus was the challenge of keeping preaching real in a time when we are bombarded with receiving information instantaneously, Facebook, tweeting, texting, etc., are elements of attraction being driven by the entertainment industry. if we are to continue positively, attracting young people to church we must preach to them in a manner they will understand and keep it (our preaching) real. The conference was also an opportunity to support the next generation of ministry innovators by making gifts to the Dr. John D. mangram scholarship .

Commencement was held on saturday, may 7, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the Anthony robinson Varsity gymnasium of the E.W. rand health, Physical Education, and recreation Center. The graduating seniors all wore the Jarvis Bulldog colors of blue and gold robes. honored at the Commencement were the 50 year golden graduates, class of 1961; mr. Earl Culbert of Alexandria, louisiana, and mr. laray Johnson, from Big sandy, Texas. other honors went to Dr. ralph Brown, Professor Emeritus who was thanked for his dedication to Jarvis and the students. Trustee, nancy shaw, who retired from the Board at the may meeting, was also recognized by Dr. Thomas for her years of service. The speaker for the 99th Commencement ceremony was Dr. Angela Chambers of Tyler. Dr. Chambers began her presentation with moment for life by nikkie minaj, which resonated for the 2011 graduating class. she went on to say that this was a great moment for Jarvis Christian College as we approach the Centennial Anniversary 100 years of educating men and women to make a difference in society. Dr. Chambers message was simple - have a Vision. she told the graduating seniors that it would be through developing a vision and sticking to it, that they would have success in their careers and their future. Proverbs 29:18 teacheswhere there is no vision, the people perish. Another point of emphasis given to the JCC students and Commencement attendees, was that you can learn from James 2:17: Faith, without works, is dead. she encouraged everyone to remember the moment, as we continue, imagining the Possibilities.

Centennial Celebration Continues Calling all Alumns, Where Are You Now?
As you may know, the College will be celebrating its 100th year anniversary soon. This celebration promises to be exciting and it is hoped that all Jarvisites will participate in the series of planned events. There will be many activities celebrating people and organizations, such as: miss Jarvis; miss UnCF; greek organizations; teachers/educators; athletes; choir members; and band members. As part of the celebration, Dr. John D. mangram is writing a book that tells the history of Jarvis Christian College. The book details Jarvis from the beginning to today. The desire is to include as much information as possible about how and why Jarvis started, information about the founders, students, faculty, staff, and trustees, as well as the current status of the College. The intent is that this be a comprehensive history. Therefore, for inclusion in parts of the history of Jarvis Christian College, certain features will require contributions by individuals and/or organizations. For example, there will be a section on the various young ladies who have been miss Jarvis. This will include photographs and a brief biographical statement. While the College has the photographs of most campus queens and knows when they were crowned, the College does not have current photographs. We are currently gathering information and are asking that if you previously served as ms. Jarvis., please contact mr. Christopher Wooten, Director of Alumni Affairs, at 903-769-5724 or cwooten@jarvis.edu to ensure the Alumni Affairs office has a picture and the year you were crowned. The same applies to miss UnCF. if you previously served as ms. Jarvis/UnCF please contact mr. Christopher Wooten, Director of Alumni Affairs, at 903-769-5724 or cwooten@jarvis.edu with the year you served as ms. UnCF (if it is not listed below). ALAbAMA CHAPTER
The Alabama Area Alumni Chapter of Jarvis Christian College is alive and well. Their 2010 Theodore Ted Hawkins Scholarship Banquet was held in Birmingham in November and was a success. They have approximately 22 active members from all over the state of Alabama. The members love Jarvis Christian College, and work very hard every year to support the scholarship banquet and the College. The Alabama Chapter meets every other month, usually in Birmingham. However, their January meetings were held in Montgomery and hosted by one of themembers, Mrs. Jessie Daniels Turner, Class of 1957. The Alabama Chapter is asking for your prayers for their most senior member, Mr. Cleveland Bedgood, Class of 1955, who had a stroke in November, 2010. He is on the road to recovery, but he needs your prayers. The Chapter is proud to announce that in May of 2010, thesecond Alabama student graduated from Jarvis Christian College, and is now pursuing an MBA degree. Currently, there are four Alabama students enrolled at the college and the Chapter is very proud of all of them. One of our main goals as a Chapter is student recruitment. Because of the emphasis on the upcoming Million $$ Babycampaign by the National Alumni to raise one million dollars to commemorate Jarvis Centennial, the Alabama Chapter will not hold its annual scholarship banquet in November, 2011. Instead, all of their fund-raising efforts will focus on the Centennial. The President, Eugene Harris, Class of 1966, has as one of his goals to increase our membership to 40 active members by 2014. He is encouraging all Jarvis alums currently residing in the state of Alabama to join the Chapter and support their efforts to help our beloved Jarvis Christian College.
