TAYLOR COUNTY, KENTUCKY SHIVELYS
Taylor County, Kentucky was formed in 1848 from Green County, KY.
Green County was formed in 1792 from Nelson and Lincoln Counties. Nelson
County was formed in 1784 from Jefferson County. Jefferson County, Kentucky
was originally formed as Jefferson County, Virginia in 1780. The state of
Kentucky was granted statehood in 1792.
It is known that the early Taylor County Shively's were in Kentucky even
before it was granted statehood in 1792. On the 1791 Nelson County, KY
Tithable list is the cabin of Richard Dean with other occupants John Shively,
Michael Shively and Jacob Shively. Still living in Taylor County, KY are the
family members of Paul Shively who descend from Jacob Shively and family
members of Dr. Eugene Shively who descend from Michael Shively.
John Shively was married on 10-October-1794 in Washington County, KY
(Marriage Book 1, Page 6) to Susanna Hayden who was the daughter of William
Hayden and Susanna Buckman. On the October 1792 Nelson County, KY tax list
John Shively is listed over 21 which would mean he was born before 1771. John
died sometime before 1811 when a deed located in Breckenridge County, KY
Deed Book C, Page 135 records “this indenture made the seventeenth day of
September one thousand eight hundred and eleven between John Shepherd &
Susanna Shepherd his wife, late Susannah Shively widow and relict of John
Shively deceased". Michael Shively was married on 6-January-1797 in
Washington County, KY (Marriage Book 1, Page 18) to Nancy Payne. On the
October 1792 Nelson County, KY tax list Michael Shively is listed over 21 which
would mean he was born before 1771. Nancy Payne Shively is listed on the
1850 KY Mortality Schedule and she was bom 1775 died May-1850.
Jacob Shively was married 17-September-1799 in Green County, KY (Marriage
Volume 1A, Page 49, Marriage #208) to Sophia Davis. Jacob was living in 1850
and from the census information he was born about 1772. The October 1792
Nelson County, tax list records Jacob being between the ages of 16 and 21. The
will of Jacob Shively was recorded in April 1851 in the records of Taylor County,
KY.The first historical event found in the United States records for an ancestor
of the Taylor County Shively's is a land grant in Frederick County, VA for a
Michael Shively: 1762, Michael Shively, assignee of John and Daniel Kennedy,
245 acres, 11-Oct-1766 date of grant, Frederick County, VA Book 2, Paget4.
More information is needed regarding this Michael Shively. It is known that
Michael Shively sold 100 of his 245 acres to Christian Shively. Christian Shively
sold the 100 acres to Joseph Mitchell in 1778. Christian moved to Monongahla
County, VA (now WV) where his wife, Mary, needed to be “examined” regarding
the sale of the 100 acres. Christian and Mary had moved to Jefferson County,
KY. In 1786 this request for Mary to be “examined” was completed and sent back
to Berkeley County, VA. This Christian Shively established a mill in Jefferson
County, KY and is who Shively, KY was named after. From the Shively DNA
Project the descendants of Christian Shively match all three of the early Taylor
County, KY descendants establishing the connection back to Frederick County,
VA. (An important note for researchers working on these land grants is that the
area of Frederick County, VA where this land was located became Berkeley
County, VA in 1772. IN 1863 Berkeley County, VA became Berkeley County,
w.
There are paper trails that connect all three early Taylor County Shivelys
to a Michael Shively. On 8-Jul-1788 in Monongalia County VA, John Shively,
heir at law of Michael Shively, is granted 302 acres by survey bearing date the
17® day of August 1786 lying and being in the County of Monongalia on Scot's
Mill Run adjoining land of Abram Harding. On 15-Mar-1792 John Shively of
Nelson County, VA sold the 302 acres to Abram Harden (Monongalia County,
WV Deed Book 125, Pages 178-180).
In 1803 a deed was recorded in Green County, KY Deed Book 4, Page 43
which lists Michael Shively and Jacob Shively heirs of Michael Shively. The
deed follows: "Know all men by these presents that we Michael Shively and
Jacob Shively heirs of Michael Shively Deceased both of Green County and state
of Kentucky do make constitute and appoint William Kelso of Breckenridge

Shively Family Farm Receives Century Recognition
by Tabitha Goodiing

MILLMONT, Pa, — The Shively Farm in Union County, Pennsylvania, was recently recognized
as a Century Farm, but its history stretches beyond 100 years.
Brian and Barbara Shively own and operate the farm's 114 acres in the village of
Millmont, growing hay, row crops and small grains.
Brian Shively is the grandson of Clarence Shively, who
purchased the farm in March 1916.
Clarence Shively bought only 16 acres that year. In
1926, he purchased the remaining acreage. Clarence’s
son, Roger Shively, took over the farm in 1951
Brian Shively started farming it as his own in 2008. He
said he is actually the eighth-generation Shively farmer
in Union County. A cousin, who has since passed away,
traced the family back to the boat from Switzerland
when ancestor Christian Shively arrived and eventually
settled in Union County in the 1730s. The sons of
Pennsylvania's founder, William Penn, sold 1, 100 acres
to Christian Shively.
“I wish we stil had that,” Brian Shively said.
At some point in the 1940s, the land was distributed within the family and sold to other
individuals. Had the farm stayed intact, the Shively farm would be almost a thousand acres
larger and would qualify as a Bicentennial Farm.
The original farm was located not far from the current one. A log house and barn built in
the style of Swiss structures existed on the property until only three years ago. The owner of the
property decided to tear down the nearly 300-year-old buildings, much to Brian Shively's
dismay.
Brian Shively had been inside the buildings and described the architecture as having no
metal. A hand-dug cellar exited in the old house.
“There were only wooden hinges on the barn doors and wooden shingles,” he said,
This was because Pennsylvania in its earliest days was mostly forested and there were
no other resources but wood,
There is other known history as well
A common threat to the first Shively family and other settlers were Native Americans.
The threat was so severe and constant, early records indicated, that Christian Shively would
hide his wife and children from the Native Americans who were known to scalp and kill settlers,
One of those hiding places for Christian's family was within the thick of the cornfields.
Part of the history in this part of Pennsylvania was something known as “The Great
Runaway.” Families who developed land and started farms, later chose to pack and leave the
area from Mill mont all the way to Lewisburg, because of the fear of Native Americans and all the
killings.
‘Two families are said to have chosen to stay despite the threat. One of the families was
that of Christian Shively.
Christian was determined, Brian Shively said, because he came to Pennsylvania to farm
freely. He left Switzerland because he could not support his family due to strict laws in that
country at that time.
The family name changed over time, spelled “Scheublein’ in some records and
“Scheiblein’ in others,
‘Currently, 14 generations exist that are descended from Christian Shively. Brian Shively
is only the eighth because his grandfather and father had children late in life. Roger Shively was,
over 50 years of age when Brian Shively was born,Roger Shively told many stories about the farm from the early 1900s, said Brian Shively.
The current farm was purchased when Roger was two weeks old.
“Grandpa (Clarence) bought a railroad car of cement in 1916, and built 10 buildings
including the manure pit,” Brian Shively said. "Grandpa was clever. He took pipe and buried it
and managed to have running water before anyone else.”
Clarence Shively was a horse and cattle dealer. He would travel by train to Nebraska
and had a horse bam in Miffinburg, Pennsylvania. He would get on the train in Altoona and
would arrive in Nebraska the next day. Depending on whether or not he traveled express
determined if he needed to get the cattle off the train to water and feed them.
Brian Shively said two or three of Clarence’s boys would walk cattle from Centre Hall, in
Centre County, all the way to Millmont, about a 20-mile stretch, when they were as young as 6
years old.
Clarence Shively's sons, including Roger Shively, had to break horses.
Clarence Shively owned up to 13 farms through the years and started a slaughterhouse
later known as Shively's Meats.
‘Around the time that much of the land was separated and sold in the 1940s, two sons -
Fred Shively and Clark Shively - took over the meat business. In July 1941, Roger Shively went
into military training and ended up serving in World War Il. When he came home from the war,
he worked on the farm with Clarence Shively.
In 1951, Roger Shively got married and took over the family farm. He then began a dairy
operation which lasted until 1987. After that, he raised heifers until 1998,
Brian Shively helped farm the land as his father aged, and he rented other acres to
another farmer.
Brian and Barbara Shively officially purchased the farm in 2008 and made half of it
certified organic. They are currently transitioning the remained of the farm to organic.
‘The couple raises primarily hay, some com, beans, oats and wheat.
Of the 11 children of Clarence Shively, only one remains. Hertha Wehr is 93 years old
and resides in a care facility in Lewisburg,
Barbara Shively noticed that the year Clarence purchased the farm was 1916, so in the
spring of 2016, she applied for the Century Farm status,
Pennsylvania State Rep. Fred Keller visited the farm earlier this year to make the
declaration.
Brian Shively, who also has a business repairing tractors, said he felt he should continue
to operate the family farm because of its history
Brian and Barbara Shively have a 10-year-old daughter, Patricia, a ninth-generation
Shively, Patticia is active in 4-H, raising chickens, and would love to have horses return to the
farm.
