The many friends of Rachel Jane and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Shively, will be interested in the following accounts from the Erie (Pa.) Times of the cause of the illness and the miraculous recovery: “One of the most unusual operations ever performed on an Erie patient was accomplished on Monday, February 3, in Jefferson hospital, Philadelphia, when a tooth was extracted from the right lung of twelve year old Rachel Shively, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Shively, 228 West ‘Twenty-second street. “The little girl whose health failed continually from the time she had two teeth extracted, last fall, is now at her home and on the way to complete recovery. The operation is considered the most remarkable because of the fact that no anesthetic was administered “Dr. Chevalier Jackson, noted surgeon of the Jefferson hospital staff in Philadelphia performed the act. The starting of the girls illness dated from a day early in ‘October when she paid a visit to a dentist's office in Erie. She had two teeth extracted after gas had been administered. But both she and her parents were under the impression that both teeth had been taken out by the dentist. But from that time on the Girl was ill and doctors could not fathom the case. At times her temperature ran as high as 105 1/4, but on noticeable cause was evident so far as physicians could determine. Finally one doctor ordered an X-ray, taken and the picture showed a tooth lodged in the girl's right lung. “Hearing of the remarkable ability displayed by Dr. Jackson for removing just such articles from the lungs and stomach, the Shivelys had Rachel Jane taken to Philadelphia for the operation. Without administering anesthetic and using his bronchoscope, Dr. Jackson pumped out the lung and removed the tooth in about fifteen minutes. In a short time Rachel Jane's health began to show improvement and she was taken to her home in Erie on February 9.” Rachael Jane is an accomplished musician and reader and has, since her residence in Erie appeared on concert programs. Vincennes folk remember with pleasure the program numbers which Rachel Jane contributed for the benefit of organizations of the city before the family moved to Erie The following was extracted from The Evening Sun, Baltimore, Maryland, Monday, December 9, 1985, Page 34, Column 3: Rachel S.
