PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee WD-006, Testing of
Welds, to supersede AS 2205.2.1—1997.
The objective of this edition is to update the Standard and include editorial changes in
accordance with current Standards Australia editorial policy.

METHOD
1 SCOPE
This Standard sets out a method for transverse butt tensile testing of a welded joint.
2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS
The following documents are referred to in this Standard:
AS
1391 Methods for tensile testing of metals
2205 Methods for destructive testing of welds in metal
2205.1 Method 1: General requirements for tests
3 PRINCIPLE
A test specimen taken transversely from a butt welded joint containing weld metal and
parent metal affected by welding is subjected to uniaxial tension. The transverse butt tensile
strength is then determined.

(b) Where prepared from pipe, the test specimen (whether it comprises the full section of
the pipe, a strip cut longitudinally or a strip cut circumferentially from the pipe) shall
be prepared as described in AS 1391, with the following additional provisions:
(i) The parallel length (P) shall be in accordance with Figure 1(c) or 1(d), as
appropriate.
NOTE: For end gripping, where plugs are used, they should be radiused as in
Figure 1(c) so as not to affect the elongation of the specimen.
(ii) The weld zone shall be located centrally in the parallel length.
(c) The reinforcement and penetration beads shall be left as welded, unless otherwise
required by the application standard or, where no application standard exists, the weld
shall be dressed in service.
5 PROCEDURE
The procedure shall be in accordance with AS 1391 using any convenient straining rate or,

if applicable, the straining rate specified in the application Standard. Calculations of cross-
sectional area shall be in accordance with the dimensions for test pieces specified in
AS 1391.
6 REPORTING OF RESULTS
The test results shall be reported as follows:
(a) Identification of this and any relevant application Standards (i.e., ‘AS 2205.2.1,
Transverse butt tensile test and ............’).
(b) Identification of test specimens by any markings (e.g., ‘Specimen A’).
(c) Type of test specimen (i.e., reduced section specimen, multiple specimens, full
section pipe, parallel specimen (see Figure 1)).
(d) Type of material and, if known, Standard number and grade.
(e) For tensile tests, dimensions of test specimen and minimum original cross-sectional
area, including parallel length where not specified by the application Standard.
(f) Any special feature of the test specimen before testing (e.g., any visible
imperfections).
(g) The removal or otherwise of weld reinforcement.
(h) Maximum force.
(i) Calculated tensile strength.
(j) Location of failure.
(k) Any special features of the fracture surface (e.g., presence and type of any defects).
(l) Compliance or otherwise with the application Standard, if applicable.
