National Artists Of The Philippines

National Artists Award (NAA)

Bestows the the highest form of recognition to Filipino artists for their
significant contributions in arts and letters.
What are the two cultural offices
that facilitates the deliberation and
selection process of the said award?

They are the NCCA (National


Comission on Culture and the
Arts) and the CCP (Cultural
Center of the Philippines).
When was it established?
Who issued it?
NAA was established in 1972
under presidential Decree No.
1001 issued by then Prisident
Ferdinand Marcos.
Who was the first
recipient of the NAA?

The first recipient of the NAA is


Fernando Amorsolo.
How many artists have
received the award so far?
And what are the seven
disciplinal areas?
Currently, the recipients are 66. The seven
disciplinal areas include: (1) architecture,
design and allied arts, (2) film and broadcast
arts, (3) visual arts, (4) literature, (5) dance,
(6) music and (7)theatre.
Are there only seven?
No. In the history of the NAA, other
categories have been considered by
“virtue of the president’s
prerogative.”
What are they?

Among them, historical literature and


fashion design.

Tell me something about the
CHURCH OF THE HOLY
SACRIFICE in UP Diliman…

It is credited as the first Catholic


Church in the country to employ
a circular architecture with a thin
shell dome.
Whose Idea was it?

It is Leandro Locsin’s (1990)


architectural vision that drew
inspiration from the spirit of the
times.
But why circular?

Reminiscent of the flying saucer,
the spherical structure indicated
a keen interest in space travel;
and advancements in science
and technology in the 1950’s. Was the church even
recognized tho?

Yes. It is recognized as a
National Historical Landmark as
well as a Cultural Treasure by
the National Historical Institute Whose work was it
and by the National Museum. tho?
It is a consolidation of five
National Artists: Locsin for
architecture and four other
modernists in the visual arts,
whose works are found inside
the chapel.

They are:
Abueva- Double sided crucifix
carved in hard wood
Arturo Luz-terrazzo floor
Vicente Manansala- Murals of the
15 stations of the cross.
Ang Kiukok- assisted Manansala
Any other artists involved
with the church?

Yes. Jose Maceda, an


ethnomusivologist (awarded 1997)
National artist for Music. His
“Pagsamba” involved a hundred
mixed voices and indigenous
musical instruments.
