Pre-reading Activities (Read the instructions and Postscript- PS 1&2)

Instructions: Research the topics mentioned below. Prepare a 4-5 minutes speech presentation. Each
person in every group should at least speak around 1-1.5 minute(s).

PS 1. If you would like your friends to keep the information somewhere to go over them again
whenever they want you can prepare a written document. (Not Compulsory)

PS.2: If you like to prepare one and show it in class you need to send it to the instructor have my
permission one day earlier. (PPts are not compulsory)

1. About The Author & Historical Background (Europe & Soviet Union before 1949)(Kaan- Sıla-
Mert): Research the author’s life and parts of his life experiences which are relevant with the
novel you will read. See what made him end up with writing this book. Mention all the
influences he had.
Research when the book was written. How do you think overall atmosphere of the era might
have affected the atmosphere in the book.
2. Totalitarianism (Yağız - Beren): Research what this concept is and what it entails. Give
examples from history and what is the effect of this type of regime on people’s lives and
well-being. . (Make sure you find advantages and disadvantages of this type of regime)
3. Socialism (Eliz- Selen- Süleyman): Research what this concept is and what it entails. Give
examples from history and what is the effect of this type of regime on people’s lives and
well-being. (Make sure you find advantages and disadvantages of this type of regime)
4. Utopia & Dystopia (Nisan-Devin-Emir): Make a thorough research on Utopic and dystopic
novel types and make a presentation by giving some examples from popular works.
