Salome

Lines 23 to 35

Never again!
I needed to clean up my act,
get fitter,
cut out the booze and the fags and the sex.
Yes. And as for the latter,
it was time to turf out the blighter,
the beater or biter,
who’d come like a lamb to the slaughter
to Salome’s bed.

In the mirror, I saw my eyes glitter.

I flung back the sticky red sheets,
and there, like I said – and ain’t life a bitch –
was his head on a platter.
Global Issue
Portrayal of women as sinister beings.

Outline
1. Salome is a poem written by Carol Ann Duffy in her works of The World’s Wife. It
shows the story of Salome and John the Baptist from the biblical times.
2. The global issue is portrayal of women as sinister beings. They act against their
stereotypes and therefore are portrayed as evil.
3. This can be seen in Salome from lines 23 to 35 where she describes her sinister
acts. It can be seen through simile and enjambment.
4. The globe issue can be seen in Medusa, Delilah and Salome. In Mrs Faust the
woman becomes sinister and In the Devil’s wife the woman was sinister.
5. These are examples of the global issue. Our society is now evolving and eventually
all genders will be treated equally.
