5 Investigate about James Cook. What are some important events or tales about him?

Back in his day in the 18th century, Captain Cook was considered the world's greatest explorer.
A British naval officer, Captain Cook explored and mapped vast areas of the earth - including
many Pacific islands. In 1778, Captain Cook became the first westerner to discover Hawaii.

Ultimately rising to the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy, Cook made three voyages to the
Pacific Ocean, achieving the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia, the
European discovery of the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation and
mapping of Newfoundland and New Zealand.

His main objective was to observe the planet Venus as it passed between the Earth and the Sun.
This would help astronomers to calculate the distance of the Sun from the Earth. He also hoped
to find the fabled southern continent. The first voyage is in red, the second in green, and the
third in blue.
