“Forget developing Poor Countries, it’s time to de-develop rich countries”

By Jason Hickel

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals,
were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action
to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people will attain the full happiness
that they need and world peace by 2030.

In this article of Jason Hickel, I agree with him in “Forget developing Poor
Countries, it’s time to de-develop rich countries”. Based on what I had understood in this
article, I think he is right that rich countries can de-develop by reducing their
consumption and that poor countries will have benefits from reducing their consumption
because this is why there is poor and reach countries because other countries having
scarce when it comes to resources while other countries has overconsumption of this in
which it also puts our planet and society at risk.

Reach countries should help to improve the economy of poor countries. In other
words, reach countries will the one who will adjust like Economist Peter Edward said
that instead of pushing poorer countries to “catch up” with rich ones, we should be
thinking of ways to get rich countries to “catch down” to more appropriate levels of
development. But in return, poor countries will also make an action about the climate
change crisis for the development and improvement of their country.

The “de-developing framework” is about shifting the idea of development from

economic growth to life expectancy and happiness. I think this idea is interesting since it
focuses on how people are living a long life and enjoy happiness. In this case, poverty
might be end and poor countries can manage to make progress and development.
