Completing Sentence Shortcut Rules (বাাংলায় অর্থসহ)

Rule 1 ► That/so that/in order that (যাকে)
Structure 1: Present Tense → that/so that/in order that →
subject +can/will/may + V1 + obj/ext.
Structure 2: Past Tense→ that/so that/in order that →
subject + could/would/might + V1 + obj/ext.
Example:
1. We eat so that we can survive. (আমরা খাই, যাকে ককর আমরা
বাাঁচকে োজর/লড়াই করকে োজর)
2. We ate so that we could survive. (আমরা কখকয়জে, যাকে ককর
আমা বাাঁচকে/লড়াই করকে োরোম)
3. We eat so that we may live. (আমরা খাই, যাকে ককর আমরা
বাাঁচকে োজর)
4. The farmers sow seeds that they may get a harvest.
(কৃষক বীি বেন ককর, যাকে ককর োরা ফসল কেকে োকর)
5. I closed the door so that he might not enter the
room. (আজম দরিাটি বন্ধ ককরজে, যাকে ককর কস ককে প্রকবশ করকে না
োকর)
6. She saved money in order that she could buy a gift.
(কস টাকা িজমকয়জেল, যাকে ককর কস একটি উেহার জকনকে োরে)
Rule 2 ► As if/as though (এমন… কযন)
Structure 1: Present Tense→ as if/as though → subject + V2
+ object. Or Subject + were + object.
Structure 2: Past Tense→ as if/as though → subject + had +
V3 + object. Or Subject + had been + object.
Example:
1. He talks as if he knew everything. (কস এমনিাকব বলকে কযন
কস সবই িানে)
2. She spoke as if she had known everything. (কস
এমনিাকব বলল কযন সবই িাকন)
Rules 3 ► Lest/In case (যাকে.. না/ নেুবা)
Structure: Any Tense→ Lest→ subject + should/might + V1
+ object.
Example:
1. Walk fast lest you should miss the train. (দ্রুে হাাঁট নেুবা
েুজম কেনটি জমস করকব)
2. I wrote down her address in case I should forget it.
(আজম োর ঠিকানা জলকখ করকখজে নেুবা আজম এটি িুকল যাব)
3. I’ve bought a chicken in case Raj should stay for
lunch. (আজম একটি জচককন/মু রজি জককনজে যাকে রাি লাকে র্াককে োকর)
4. They kept watching all night lest robbers should
come. (োরা সারারাে কদখজেল নেুবা ডাকাে আসে)
5. We must take care lest evil thoughts enter our
hearts. (আমাকদর সেকথ হকে হকব যাকে কু-জচন্তা আমাকদর হৃদকয় প্রকবশ
করকে না োকর)
6. We must take immediate action lest it grew worse.
(আমাকদর অজবলকে বযবস্থা জনকে হকব যাকে এটি আরও খারাে না হয়।)
7. He hide in the woods lest the soldiers would find
him. (কস িঙ্গকল লু জককয়জেল যাকে সসনযরা োকক খুাঁ কি না োয়।)
8. Take your umbrella lest you should get wet. (আেনার
োো জনন যাকে আেজন জিকি না যান।)

Rule 5 ► No sooner had (করকে না করকেই)
Structure: No sooner had + subject + V3 + object →
than/before + subject + V2 + object.
Example:
1. No sooner had I reached the station than the train
left. (আজম কেশকন কে োঁ াকে না কে োঁ াকেই কেনটি চকল কিল।
2. No sooner had we entered the room than they
started clapping. (আজম ককে প্রকবশ করকে না করকেই োরা হাকে
োজল কদয়া শুরু করল)
3. No sooner had the teacher entered the class than
the students kept quiet. (জশেক কেজণককে প্রকবশ করকে না
করকেই জশোর্ীরা চুে হকয় কিল)
4. No sooner had we seen Eva than she started waving.
(আমরা ঈিাকক কদখকে না কদখকেই কস হাে কদালাকে শুরু করল)
5. No sooner had the watchman seen the Police officer

Rule 6 ► Hardly had
Structure: Hardly had + subject + V3 + object→ before/when
+ subject + V2 + object.
Example:
1. Hardly had the teacher entered the classroom when
the student kept quiet. (জশেক কেজণককে প্রকবশ করজেই
জশোর্ীরা চুে হকয় কিল)
2. Hardly had I seen Sam when he started walking. (আজম
সামকক কদখকেই কস হাাঁটা শুরু করল)
3. Hardly had I started working on the computer when
the electricity was gone. (আজম কজিউটার অন করকেই জবদ্যযৎ
চকল কিল)
4. Hardly had Eva seen her mother when she started
crying. (ঈিা োর মাকক কদখকেই কাাঁদকে শূ রু করল)
Rule 7 ► Scarcely had
Structure: Scarcely had + subject + V3 + object→ when +
subject + V2 + object.
Example:
1. Scarcely had the teacher seen the student when she
started studying. (জশেককক কদখকেই জশোর্ীরা েড়কে শুরু করল)
2. Scarcely had John started the journey when it
started raining. (িন ভ্রমণ শুরু করকেই বৃ জি শুরু হল)
3. Scarcely had Samuel closed the door when the
calling bell started ringing. (সযামু কয়ল দরিটি বন্ধ করকেই কজলাং
কবল বািকে শুরু করল)
Rule 8 ► Barely had
Structure: Barely had+ subject + V3 + object→ when +
subject + V2 + object.
Example:
1. Barely had Arthur started the speech when Russell
started questioning. (আর্থার বক্তৃো শুরু করকেই রাকসল প্রশ্ন
করকে শুরু করল)
2. Barely had Eva started cooking when the doorbell
started ringing. (ঈিা রান্না শুরু করকেই কডারকবল বািকে লািল)
3. Barely had Alexander seen Anne when she started
laughing. (আকলক্সান্ডার অযাজনকক কদখকেই কস হাসকল লািল)
4. Barely had Robin entered the room when Tom
started shouting. (রজবন ককে প্রকবশ করকেই টম জচৎকার শুরু করল)
জবকশষ দ্রিবয: Hardly, Scarcely এবাং Barely প্রায় একই অকর্থ বযবহৃে হয়।
Rule 9 ► As Soon As (করকেই)
Structure: As soon as + subject + V2 + object→ comma (,)
subject + V2 + object.
Example:
1. As soon as Rana sat down, the phone rang. (রানা বসকেই
কফান কবকি উঠল)
2. As soon as he teacher came, there was silence. ( জশেক
আসকেই নীরবো কনকম আসল)
3. As soon as she heard the news, she burst into tears.
(খবরটা কশানা মাত্রই কস কান্নায় কিকে েড়ল)
4. As soon as we reached the station, the train left.
(কেশকন কে োঁ কেই কেন চকল কিল)
5. As soon as the students came to college, the bell
rang. (োত্ররা ককলকি আসকেই কবল কবকি উঠল।)
Rule 10 ► Would you mind? (আেজি করকবন জক?)
Structure 1: Would you mind→ V1 + ing + object.
Example:
1. Would you mind taking a cup of tea? (আেজন জক এক কাে
চা কখকে আেজি করকবন?)
2. Would you mind taking this book back for him?
(আেজন জক োর িনয এই বইটি জফজরকয় জনকে আেজি করকবন?)
3. Would you mind sending that mail for him? (আেজন জক
োর িনয কসই কমইলটি োঠাকে আেজি করকবন?)
Structure 2: Would you mind + If + somebody + V2 +
object/ext.
Example:
1. Would you mind if I used your mobile now? (আজম আেনার
কমাবাইল বযবহার করকল আেজন জকেু মকন করকবন?)
2. Would you mind if I borrowed your motorcycle tonight?

Structure 3: Would you mind + Somebody's + Verb + ing +
object/ext.
Example:
1. Would you mind Peter's staying here with us? (আেজন
জক জেটাকরর এখাকন আমাকদর সাকর্ র্াকার জবষকয় জকেু মকন করকবন?)
2. Would you mind my brother's coming with us to the
picnic? (আেজন জক আমার িাই আমাকদর সাকর্ জেকজনকক আসাকে জকেু

Rule 11 ► Till/Until (েযথন্ত)
Structure 1: Present Tense/Future Tense→ Till/Until→
Present Tense.
Structure: 2: Past Tense→ Till/Until→ Past Tense. Rule 14 ► Conditional Sentence (If)
■ First Conditional
Example:
Structure: If + subject + V1 + object→ subject +

■ Third Conditional
Structure 1: If + subject + had + V3 + object→ subject + could
have/should have/would have/might have + V3 + object.
Example:
1. If I had seen him I would have given him the message.
(আজম যজদ োকক কদখকে কেোম েকব আজম োকক বােথ া জদোম।)
2. If you have finished the work, I shall have paid you.
(যজদ আেজন কািটি কশষ ককরন, আজম আেনাকক েজরকশাধ করব)
3. If you had helped me, I would have helped you. (েুজম
যজদ আমাকক সাহাযয করকে, আজম কোমাকক সাহাযয করোম।)
4. If you had written the letter, I shall have posted it.
(আেজন যজদ জচঠিটি জলকখ র্াককন েকব আজম এটি কোস্ট করোম।)
Structure 2: Had + subject + V3 + object→ subject + could
have/should have/would have/might have + V3 + object.
Example:
1. Had he invited me I should have joined the party. (জেজন
আমাকক আমন্ত্রণ িানাকল আমার োটিথকে কযাি কদওয়া উজচে জেল।)
2. Had I not been so tired, I might have realised it
easily. (এে ক্লান্ত না হকল হয়কো সহকিই বু ঝকে োরোম।)
Rule 15 ► Since (সময় েূ কবথ কবাঝাকে)
Structure 1: Present indefinite/Present perfect→ since →
Past indefinite.
Structure 2: Past indefinite → since → Past perfect.
Example:
1. It is ten years since my sister was born. (আমার কবাকনর
িকন্মর দশ বের হকলা।)
2. Many years have passed since his friend met him
first. (অকনক বের কককট কিকে োর বন্ধুর সাকর্ প্রর্ম কদখা।)
3. It was long since I had seen her last. (অকনক সময় হকয়
কিকে আজম োকক কশষ কদকখজে)
Rule 16 ► So…. that (এেই কয)
Structure: Subject + verb + so + adjective/adverb + that +
subject + cannot/could not + সঙ্গজেেূ ণথ verb + বাকী অাংশ।
Example:
1. The man is so weak that he cannot move his body.
(কলাকটি এেই দ্যবথল কয কস োর শরীরকক নড়াচড়া করকে োকর না।)
2. Their throats were so dry that they couldn’t speak.
(োকদর িলা এেই শুজককয় জিকয়জেল কয োরা কর্া বলকে োরজেল না।)
3. He is so expert that he can solve it easily. (জেজন এেই
জবকশষজ্ঞ কয জেজন সহকিই এটি সমাধান করকে োকরন।)
4. She is so intelligent that she can understand it
quickly. (কস এে বু জিমান কয কস দ্রুে বু ঝকে োকর।)
5. He plays so skillfully that everybody gets amused.
(কস এে জনেু ণিাকব কখকল কয সবাই মিা োয়।)
Rule 17 ► Would rather (েবু ও/বরাং)
Structure: Subject + would rather + V1→ than + verb/noun
Example:
1. He would rather die than forgive you. (কস কোমাকক েমা
করার কচকয় মরকব।)
2. I would rather die than begging. (আজম জিো করার কচকয়
বরাং মকর যাব)
Rule 18 ► Without + gerund (োড়া/বযেীে)
Structure: Without + V1 +ing + object+ personal subject +
verb + প্রকয়ািনীয় বাকী অাংশ.
Example:
1. Without working hard you cannot achieve success.
(ককঠার েজরেম োড়া আেজন সফলো অিথন করকে োরকবন না।)
2. Without reading more you cannot make a good
result. (কবজশ না েড়কল েুাম িাকলা ফলাফল করকে োরকব না)
Rule 19 ► By + gerund (দ্বারা/জদকয়)
Structure: By + V1 +ing + object +personal subject + verb +
প্রকয়ািনীয় বাকী অাংশ।
Example:
1. By working hard you can achieve success. (ককঠার
েজরেম ককর আেজন সফলো অিথন করকে োকরন।)
2. By reading more you can make a good result. (কবজশ
কবজশ েকড় িাকলা ফলাফল করকে োরকবন।)
Rule 20 ► Unless (যজদ না)
Structure: Unless যু ক্ত incomplete sentence টি বকস → সঙ্গজেেূ ণথ
েূ নাথ ঙ্গ বাকয বকস।
Example:
1. Unless you work hard you will fail in life. (আেজন যজদ
ককঠার েজরেম না ককরন েকব আেজন িীবকন বযর্থ হকবন।)
2. Unless you walk fast you will miss the train. (আেজন যজদ
দ্রুে না হাাঁকটন আেজন কেনটি ধরকে বযর্থ হকবন।)
Rule 21 ► As long as/So long as (যেজদন)
Structure: As long as যু ক্ত incomplete sentence টি বকস→সঙ্গজেেূ ণথ
েূ নাথ ঙ্গ বাকয বকস।
Example:
1. I will fight against injustice as long as I can. (আজম যেজদন
োজর অজবচাকরর জবরুকি লড়ব।)
2. He’s welcome to stay as long as I can afford. (যেেণ
আমার সামর্থয আকে েেেণ র্াককে োকক স্বািে িানাই।)
3. I’ll remember that day as long as I live. (আজম যেজদন বাাঁজচ
কসজদকনর কর্া মকন রাখব।)
4. You may take my car so long as you drive carefully.
(আেজন যেেণ সাবধাকন িাজড় চালান েেেণ আেজন আমার িাজড় জনকে
োকরন।)
5. Wait here as long as it rains. (যেেণ বৃ জি হয় এখাকন অকেো
করুন।)
6. Allah will be with us so long as our aim is honest.
(আল্লাহ আমাকদর সাকর্ র্াককবন যেেণ আমাকদর লেয সৎ।)
Rule 22 ► Because of/on account of/owing to/due to
(কারকণ)
Structure: Because of/on account of/owing to/due to
Phrase যু ক্ত incomplete sentence টি বকস → সঙ্গজেেূ ণথ েূ নাথ ঙ্গ বাকয বকস।
Example:
1. I could not help him due to my poverty. (আজম দাজরকদ্রযর
কারকণ োকক সাহাযয করকে োজরজন।)
2. I could not went to school because of my illness.
(আজম অসু স্থোর কারকণ স্কুকল কযকে োজরজন।)
Rule 23 ► Not only…. but also (এটি না... ওটিও)
Structure:
 Not only এর েকর Subject র্াককল but also এর
েকরও Subject বকস।
 Not only এর েকর Object র্াককল but also এর
েকরও Object বকস।
 Not only এর েকর Verb র্াককল but also এর েকরও Verb বকস।
Example:
1. Not only Rita but also Ritu will call me. (শুধু জরোই নয়
জরেুও আমাকক ডাককব।)
2. They are weak not only in Biology but also in English.
(োরা শুধু িীবজবজ্ঞাকনই নয় ইাংকরজিকেও দ্যবথল।)
3. Not only she but also her sister attended the party.
(শুধু জেজনই নন োর কবানও োটিথকে কযাি জদকয়জেকলন।)
4. Rana not only studies attentively but also takes
physical exercise regularly. (রানা শুধু মকনাকযাি জদকয়
েড়াকলখাই ককরন না, জনয়জমে শারীজরক বযায়ামও ককরন।)
5. She is not only kind but also submissive. (জেজন শুধু দয়ালু ই
নন, অনু িেও বকট।)
Rule 24 ► Too.... to (এেই..... কয)/Enough…. to
Too.... to যু ক্ত sentence এ দ্যটি বযজক্তবাচক/ সমিােীয় subject র্াককল।
Structure 1: Subject + verb + too + adjective → to + V1 +
object/ext.
Example:
1. He is too weak to walk. (জেজন হাাঁটকে খু ব দ্যবথল।)
2. The load is too heavy for her to carry. (কবাঝাটি োর বহন
করার িনয খু ব িারী)
3. Rana is too strong to defeat anybody. (রানা কাউকক
হারাকনার িনয খূ বই শজক্তশালী)
4. He has too much money to purchase anything
anytime. (কয ককান সময় জকেু ককনার িনয োর অকনক টাকা আকে।)
Too … to যু ক্ত 1st Sentence টি বস্তূবাচক বা দ্যটি জিন্ন subject র্াককল।
Structure 2: Subject + verb+ too+ adjective→ for বযাজক্ত
বাচক subject এর objective form+ to+ V1+ obj/ext.
Example:
1. The Sum is too hard for me to solve it. (অাংকটি সমাধান করা আমার
িনয খু ব কঠিন)
2. At times it creates too many problems for me to solve.
(মাকঝ মাকঝ এটি আমার সমাধান করার িনয অকনক সমসযা সেজর ককর।)
3. It is too interesting a matter for us to enjoy. (এটা আমাকদর
িনয উেকিাি করার খু ব আকষথণীয় একটি জবষয়)
Rule 25 ► Let alone (ককউ ককান কাি করকে অসমর্থ জবশ্বাস করা অকর্থ)
Let alone যু ক্ত incomplete sentence টি বকস→ (meaningful word
or phrase).
Example:
1. He cannot pass in the third division, let alone
the first division. (কস েৃেীয় জবিাকিই োশ করকে োকর না, আবার
প্রর্ম জবিাি!)
2. He cannot carry 1 kg, let alone 10 kg. (কস ১ ককজিই বহন
করকে োকর না, আবার ১০ ককজি!)
Rule 26 ► Provided / provided that / providing that /
whether / in case (যজদ অকর্থ)
Structure: …… provided/provided that/providing that→
(meaningful sentence).
Examples:
1. He will shine in life provided that he works hard. (কস
িীবকন উজ্জ্বল হকব যজদ কস ককঠার েজরেম ককর।)
2. The plane will take off provided the weather is
good. (আবহাওয়া িাকলা র্াককল কেন কটক অফ করকব।)
3. I must agree to go providing that my expenses are
paid. (আজম অবশযই কযকে রাজি আজে যজদ আমার খরচ কদওয়া হয়।)
4. We’ll start our programme whether circumstances
favour us. (েজরজস্থজে আমাকদর অনু কূকল র্াকুক না ককন আমরা
আমাকদর কপ্রাগ্রাম শুরু করব।)
5. I’ve bought a chicken in case her sister stays for
lunch. (আজম একটি মু রজি জককনজে যজদ োর কবান দ্যেু করর খাবাকরর িনয
র্াকক।)
Rule 27 ► So much/ so many (অকনক)
Structure: So much/ so many যু ক্ত incomplete sentence টি বকস

Rule 28 ► By the time (যেেকণ)
Structure 1: Main clause + by the time + Dependent clause
Structure 2: By the time + Dependent clause + Main clause
Example:
1. I will be in bed by the time you get home. (যেেকণ েুজম
বাসায় জফরকব আজম জবোনায় র্াকব।)
2. By the time that the guards realised what was
happening, the gang were already inside the bank.
(যদেকণ প্রহরী বু ঝকে োরল কয জক হকে, দলটি বযাাংকক ঢু কক েড়ল।)
Structure 1: Now that j cause clause + Effect clause
Structure 2: Effect clause + now that + cause clause
Example:
1. Now that John is married, he has become much
more responsible. (এখন কযকহেু িন জববাজহে, জেজন অকনক কবজশ
দাজয়ত্বশীল হকয় উকঠকেন।)
2. I can enjoy myself now that the exams are over. (এখন
কযকহেু েরীো কশষ, আজম এখন জনকিকক উেকিাি করকে োজর।)
Relative pronoun এর Rules
Structure 1: Subject+ who/which/what/that etc. + verb +
object → verb +object.
Structure 2: Subject + verb + object→ that/who/which/what
etc. → verb +object.
Structure 3: That/Wh-word+ subject+ verb+ object → verb
Object.
Example:
1. Riva who is a little girl is my student. (কোট কমকয় জরিা
আমার োত্রী।)
2. I know a man who is a doctor. (আজম একিনকক জচজন জযজন
একিন জচজকৎসক।)
3. London is the place where I was born. (লন্ডন হকে কসই
িায়িা কযখাকন আজম িন্মহগ্রহণ ককরজেলাম।)
4. 10:00 A.M. is the time when I go to the office. (১০:০০
হকে কসই সময় যখন আজম অজফকস যাই।)
5. A railway station is the place where trains stop.
(করলওকয় কেশন হকে কসই িায়িা কযখাকন কেন র্াকম।)
6. 1971 is the year when Bangladesh became
independent. (১৯৭১ হকে কসই বের যখন বাাংলাকদশ স্বাধীন হয়।)

8. Dhaka is the place where most of the city dwellers

Structure: Results clause + in the event + Reason clause
Example:
1. I got very nervous about the exam in the event that
it might be very difficult. (আজম েরীো সিককথ খু ব ঘাবকড়
জিকয়জেলাম কয এটি খু ব কঠিন হকে োকর।)
