Chapter Sound

1. The given graph shows the displacement versus me rela on for a disturbance travelling with
velocity of 1500 m/s. Calculate the wavelength of the disturbance.

Solu on:

T = 2 micro second

F = 1/T = 1 / 2 x 10-6 = 0.5 x 106 Hz

Speed = Wavelength x Frequency

1500 = Wavelength x 0.5 x 106 Hz

Wavelength = 3 x 10-3 m

2. A girl is si ng in the middle of a park of dimension 12 m × 12 m. On the le side of it there is a

building adjoining the park and on right side of the park, there is a road adjoining the park. A sound is
produced on the road by a cracker. Is it possible for the girl to hear the echo of this sound? Explain
your answer.

Solu on:

Echo can be heard if the gap between the original sound and reflected sound received by the listener
is around 17.2 m and me taken for the same is 0.1 sec.
Here sound reflects from the building and then reaches the girl which is much smaller than the
required distance.

Hence echo cannot be heard.

3. A car starts from rest and moves along with X-axis with constant accelera on 5 m/s2 for 8 seconds.
If it then con nues with constant velocity, what distance will the car cover in 12 seconds since it started
from the rest?

Solu on:

Car Starts from rest hence,

Ini al velocity u=o

A = 5 m/s2

me t = 8s

v = u+at

v = 0+5×8

v = 40 m/s

From second equa on

s = ut +1/2at2

s = 0x8 + 1/2x5x(8)2

s = 1/2x5x(8)2

s = 1/2x5x64

s = 5×32=160 is the distance covered in 8 seconds.

The total distance covered in 12 seconds, therefore, is 160+160=320m

4. A SONAR device on a submarine sends out a signal and receives an echo 5 sec later. Calculate the
speed of sound in water if the distance of the object from the submarine is 3625 m?

Solu on:

Time is taken to hear the echo, t = 5 s

Distance of the object from the submarine, d = 3625 m
Total distance travelled by the sonar waves during the transmission and recep on in water = 2d
The velocity of sound in water, v= 2d/t
= 2 x 3625/5
= 1450 m/s.

5. Represent graphically by two separate diagrams in each case

(i) Two sound waves having the same amplitude but different frequencies?

(ii) Two sound waves having the same frequency but different amplitudes.
(iii) Two sound waves having different amplitudes and also different wavelengths.

Solu on:

(i)

(ii)

(iii)

6. An object is dropped from rest at a height of 150 m and simultaneously another object is dropped
from rest at a height 100 m. What is the difference in their heights a er 2 s if both the objects drop
with same accelera ons? How does the difference in heights vary with me?

Solu on:
Difference in their heights = 50 m.

The difference in height does not vary with me.

construc on and working of the human ear?
