Process Paper for NHD Project – David Hills

I choose my topic on the Alaskan frontier because the subject seemed interesting to me. I was
thinking of frontiers in American history when I thought about events that dealt with manifest
destiny such as the Mexican-American War, the Oregon Territory, and the acquisition of Alaska.
I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska, and I also found it interesting that we acquired it from
Russia who later turned to a major enemy of the United States, so Alaska seemed like a good
topic to research about.

I conducted my research by going onto the gale databases and searching for papers that dealt
with the colonization of Alaska, the conflict with native Alaskan people during the colonial
period, or the American acquisition of Alaska.

I selected my presentation category to be a website because websites have so many options

that are possible with them. I also want to be competent at building a website for any reason,
and I took this as a chance to improve to be able to do that. I created my project by first setting
up my pages on a general and basic level, and then I filled out my title page.

My project on the Alaskan frontier relates to the NHD theme because the colonization,
exploration, and settling of Alaska is a frontier that was being pushed for centuries from the
Russian colonization of Alaska to the American acquisition and settlement. Alaska has also been
regarded as the “Last Frontier” in American history.
