more than £280million for bribing
African officials for access to oil in
a landmark corporate conviction.
The company handed £23million
through agents and employees to
officials at crude oil firms in Nigeria,
Cameroon and Ivory Coast between
2011 and 2016. Cash was often
flown in by private jet.
Mr Justice Fraser said: ‘The
facts demonstrate not only
sustained criminality but
sophisticated devices to
disguise it.’ He said legitimate
reasons for large

The teenager died of an infection
caused by untreated complications of
multiple rib fractures on August 13
last year, after weeks of ‘cruel
assaults and abuse’.
He was a ‘pleasant and well
mannered boy’ when he moved
from Poland to Huddersfield to
live with his mother in
October 2020, a trial at Leeds
crown court heard. But
prosecutor Jason Pitter KC
said the pair soon saw him
as a hindrance and, by
January 2021, ‘the
disciplining of him became
progressively harsh’.
He was beaten with a bed
slat and whipped with an
extension cable, the court
heard. On the day before his
death, Latoszewski was seen
on CCTV, installed at their
home to monitor Sebastian,
forcing food and drink into his
mouth and stabbing him a
number of times with a needle in the
groin and thigh. Latoszewski was
‘apparently laughing whilst he did so’,
Mr Pitter said, and Kalinowska took
over stabbing Sebastian with the needle.
On the day he died, Sebastian was
taken out of his bedroom by
Latoszewski and carried
back around 15 minutes
later, ‘naked, clearly wet
and unconscious’.

Did it make you very reflective?

in tears because it reminds her of her
mother, Mern. I was in my car at the
time and on the sat nav map, it showed a
road called Mern Place. I had chills.

I’m always wary of

people who say they
hate musicals. Who
doesn’t like singing?

You said on Instagram you’ve
battled with depression since
the flashing allegations…
The amount of posts I got in response
was incredible [last year he admitted
to exposing himself while filming
Torchwood and Doctor Who]. I just
thought, I’m just going to chat about it
and, like everything, I want to make it
a positive thing when you talk about
something. I got so much support and
also people telling me their own stories
of how what I do has helped them, which
is humbling. Like everybody, when you
have a problem, it’s good to talk to about
it. And if that doesn’t help, then it’s good
to take advice from a physician, if you
need to go on medication. But then when
you feel the time is right, like I did,
I talked with the doctor and came
off it. I’m feeling fine, knock
on wood.
Music is good
therapy too...
I had good therapy
sessions with my producer,
during the entire making of
the album. If you think you

There was Twitter controversy as to who
was going to appear, whether it was
David or Ncuti Gatwa [the new Doctor].
Whoever it was going to be, the one
thing we Whovians do is go on the
Tardis for the story and the excitement
of where we’re taken by the Doctor. So it
doesn’t matter who the Doctor is, we’re
there for the journey.
Any chance you’ll be
back in Doctor Who?
Well, if they asked me,
I would at the drop of a
hat. When I was asked to
do it again with Jodie
Whittaker, I was finishing a
tour and the costume had to
hotel in Cardiff in the same
room Scott and I stayed in the night of
our civil partnership. I had the fitting at
the window, which looked across the
building where we have our flat, but
also to the bay to where we call the
Torchwood Tower. The excitement never
leaves me for that show.

smartphone, especially when it

devices during training, which sat
between shoulder blades at the
back of the neck. This tracked the
biggest impacts you’d made during
your training sessions, such as
accelerations and how far you had
run, and delivered insights into how
exactly we were moving around
a field as a team.

My sisters and I always chat
about how we used to play Sega,
especially the Lion King game.

T’S the tiny electric car that’s already
generating a major buzz just weeks
after coming off the production line
in Turin. If it looks vaguely familiar,
then you’re not mistaken. The cool,
front-opening ‘fridge door’ is a dead
giveaway. Yes, the Microlino is a stylish
reimagining of the bubble car called the
Isetta, which was a much-loved
sensation in the 1950s.
A budget runaround, the Isetta made
motoring affordable for the masses
during the post-war era, but was still
adored by the rich and famous, not
least Hollywood legend Cary Grant.
Now the bubble car is bursting
back on to our roads, thanks to the
tycoon behind Micro Scooters. Swiss
inventor Wim Ouboter, 62, created
the foldable runaround favoured by
commuters 25 years ago and
revolutionised the way people get
around. He’s hoping his new car will
trigger another transport revolution
– the radical downsizing of city cars.
‘The Microlino is all about challenging
people to question how much car do
they really need,’ says Ouboter. ‘Climate
change means that we must urgently
reduce CO2. Less car means more life for
our planet. There is no Planet B, so
everyone must downsize.’
Ouboter’s idea is based on research
that revealed most short journeys are
taken by an average of 1.2 people in
cars that are 95 per cent too big and
over-engineered for that trip.
Consequently, the Microlino strips out
everything deemed unnecessary. It uses
60 per cent fewer parts than normal

footprint of transportation.

major city authorities such as Transport

studio album, 22. He’s also written an
inspirational book called What’s Your
Vibe? Subtitled: Tuning In to Your Best
Life, this isn’t your typical

feels very divinely timed because the
album was slightly pushed back, then
the book came early, so it’s like, wow,
this is literally landing at the same time.
It was intense but it felt great!’
Craig is performing his TS5 DJ sets at
Hits Live next week alongside the likes
of Olly Murs, Sam Smith, Tom Grennan,
KSI and more, and is all set. ‘It’s a great
opportunity to play a megamix of things
where I can do a verse and a chorus of a
song and then chop into something else.
As a DJ it’s one of the most gratifying
things. I used to have competitions with
other DJs back in the day of vinyl of how
quickly we could get the vinyl ready to
mix in the next song,’ he grins.
It seems as though that competitive
streak is still there. ‘I’m gonna really
relish the opportunity and especially
being in arenas again, and landing those
songs in that time.’
He makes sure to look back to where
he started, too: ‘I remember going to
clubs and watching a DJ – it’s a real art
form to be able to recognise what the
crowd are into, what they’re liking, what
they’re maybe not feeling in a song,
even. It’s about being able to cut out of it
quick enough before someone goes off to
the bar! Walking Away is a big song of
mine, but I know that in the context of a
20-minute set, you might want to hear it
over Dr Dre and for me to sing the
acapella over the top instead.
‘I tailor it, and I kind of love that,’ he
smiles with pride. ‘I’m as passionate as I
was when I was 16-years-old and I first
got into music, so I treat performances
with the utmost pride.’
Born in Southampton, Craig was raised
by his mum after his parents divorced.
His father also makes music and took
him along to dance halls, where a young
Craig would take the mic. He jokes that if
he were to try and tell his 16-year-old
self that he would make a 22-year
(and-counting) career out of music, that
he wouldn’t have listened and would just
want to know when he got to be on Top
Of The Pops.
Now 41, he has a fresh perspective
on his career and what matters to
him. Hence the book.
He started writing about his life
during lockdown, and the resulting
tome hit bookshelves last month.
Part memoir, part self-help, the book
sees Craig talking about key moments
in his life and career and also giving
advice to the reader. It’s been warmly
received, and many readers have praised
the star’s honesty. Its success has come
as a surprise to him: ‘I feel like there’s

‘People relate to me
in a different way’

this ebb and flow of life and my career.
I’d been asked to do a memoir before, but
I just felt like there’d be someone else out
there who could write that book that
would have more detail and more clarity
on things that I probably had forgotten
about,’ he admits.
Craig wanted to do something different:
‘I wanted to write a book that actually
could land and hopefully help people, to
almost demystify and remove the role
that we’re playing, and just get back to
human connection,’ he explains.
He recalls spending many a late night
on the book over lockdown, figuring out
back injury sent him
into a ‘dark place’, a world
away from the smiling figure
I meet.
Earlier this year, he also
featured in an NHS campaign
alongside other famous faces
to address the importance of
talking about mental health.
He gestures to the room
around him: ‘I love these
Zoom calls, because I get to
see someone’s little world,
and I get to feel that vibe
from them. Like, “Wow,
that’s a new relationship
that I didn’t have, 20
minutes before”, so it’s

what to include. He didn’t want it to be
solely about the music, either. ‘I wanted
to talk about some of the things
underneath the hood of my songs, we
can go back to childhood, lean into
having weak boundaries and depression.
‘Talk about when you said yes when
you meant to say no and people-pleasing.
It all gives context to the music though!’
He recently revealed that severe pain
saw him spiral into a depression after a
fulfilling for me.
‘I never take this for
granted, and I say that when I
get on stage, that it’s a privilege
to be there and to hear people
singing the words back to me of
my song.’

IRMINGHAM is undergoing
something of a renaissance
thanks in large part to one man:
theatre director Iqbal Khan. As
Iqbal’s acclaimed production of
Molière’s 1664 French satire Tartuffe
nears the end of its run at Birmingham
Rep, the director, a Royal Shakespeare
Company specialist and an associate
artist at the Rep, sat with me to take
stock of what is turning out to be a
remarkable year for him.
Because as well as Molière’s classic
comedy about religious hypocrisy, which

Paris to a Muslim family living in
modern-day Brum, there was that other
hit show of Iqbal’s.
This one only ran for one performance
when it opened earlier in the year.
However, it turned out to be one of the
country’s very few – possibly only – feel-
good moments in an era brim-full of
anxiety about war and the cost of living.
We are talking about this year’s
surprise hit, the superlative opening
ceremony of the Commonwealth Games
in Birmingham.
‘It was terrifying,’ admits Iqbal with a
rueful chuckle. The event’s starry cast
included Prince (now King) Charles
driving a vintage Aston Martin and the
youngest ever Nobel laureate, Malala
Yousafzai, who was treated at the city’s
Queen Elizabeth Hospital after she was
shot and nearly killed by the Taliban.
‘But it was ultimately very rewarding,’
adds Iqbal, right, with pride and perhaps
a hint of relief that the whole thing is
behind him.
As if directing the event wasn’t
daunting enough Iqbal knew that the
result would inevitably be compared to
film director Danny Boyle’s opening
ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games.
‘I talked to Danny early on. He was
very generous,’ says Iqbal, whose
production triumphed partly because
of his skills as a theatre director but
also because his roots are in
Birmingham where his parents moved
from Jhelum in Pakistan and where
Iqbal today lives with his wife, fellow
RSC director Kimberley Sykes. What

Danny’s Olympics ceremony didn’t have
– apart from the Irish dancers, giant
books on stalks and comedian Joe Lycett
– was the moral authority of Malala.
‘She’s so eloquent and she symbolises
something very important
about Birmingham,’ says Iqbal.
Malala was just one way in which
Iqbal wanted to reflect the city’s sense
of renewal while also acknowledging the
colonialism of its, and the Games’, past.
With the Games now a fond memory
in the mind of both the director and the
public it seems Iqbal is today more at
ease with creating work rooted in his
own Pakistani Muslim heritage than was
the case when he was making a name
for himself. Back then the theatre
establishment’s assumption that a
British Asian director would be best
suited to telling British Asian stories was
something he resisted.
Whether Asian or non-Asian, his
future projects are shrouded in secrecy
when I ask what’s coming up.
But there is one new project that
might be described as the perfect
combination of both British and Asian
heritages. Soon after this interview Iqbal
became a father for the first time at 52.
When the subject came up in the
interview he was beaming at the
prospect of being a dad.
‘So it is a very, very big
year,’ he says.

be distracted by permutations over net

Lanka tomorrow as they look to seal a
T20 World Cup semi-final spot.
England’s hopes rest on victory in their
final Super 12s game in Sydney and hop-
ing Australia do not overturn their infe-
rior net run-rate against Afghanistan.
If Australia claim a thumping win in
Adelaide today, Jos Buttler’s men may
have to do more than simply win – even if
they will have the advantage of knowing
exactly what is required of them.
However, having already suffered a
shock defeat against Ireland, Woakes
insists focusing on victory is the priority.
‘We don’t go through if we don’t win
this game, two points is the most impor-
tant thing – I think we all realise that,’

‘right place’ for the tournament – which
