Measures to strengthen Trade
Union
A free and democratic society must
have unions to function and freedom
of association. The ability of
employees to create unions, join
them, and advance their interests
collectively is the cornerstone of
worker rights. A democratic society
is built on the freedom of association.
Workers who want to achieve
economic and social justice have a
powerful tool which is the right to
organize unions. A union is a group
of workers who get together and
speak with a single voice to better
their life in general. The goals of
unions are to improve working
conditions overall, including
salaries, benefits, and respect for
workers. Unions promote political
engagement at both the local and
national levels and are created to
bring up the active involvement of
their members.
In this modern world where people’s
needs and wants constantly keep on
increasing the industries and
companies keep on extracting more
from the workers and their
employees. Some industries exploit
the workers and employees, in these
case trade union or labour union
plays an important role. Where
strengthening the union helps the
workers to negotiate their
grievances, wages, salaries, benefits
and more in a better way with unity
among the union members.
It is an important time to take action
to build the trade union as we closely
monitor the current trends and
developments in the industries. A
labour union can be strengthened in
a variety of ways. Which are:
UPHOLDING UNITY:
From experience, we came to
know that a large number of
unions have a political rivalry,
a division within the ranks of
workers, etc. Therefore, since
"Unity is the power," there
must be unity within the
movement. All wooers should
band together to create a
single union. There should be
a single policy, programme,
aim, and technique for the
labour movement shared by all
unions, regardless of their
political connections. Where
unions should stick with their
core principle of protecting the
workers at any cost.

POLLITIALLY
UNINFLUENCED AND
CAPTAINCY:
The leader who is now in
charge of trade unions cares
more about advancing their
political ideology than the
interests of the working class.
This is done to get benefited
the politicians. The labour
movement has suffered as a
result. Therefore, selecting
leaders from among the ranks
of the workforce itself is one
strategy to build the trade
union movement. These union
leaders should be full-time
paid union executives who
exhibit traits like literacy,
organisational skills,
ambition, control, and
patience. Through instruction
and training, workers can also
acquire leadership traits.

FINANCIALLY SOUND
UNION:
At the end of the day, all
workers are facing financial
struggles and need financial
support. Due to a lack of
funding, the workers' actions
and strikes did not last long
and were unsuccessful.
Therefore, the union must
maintain its striking money.
This strike fund would be used
as "strike pay" to assist
employees during strikes. In
addition to improving the
union’s position in
negotiations, this will win the
support of the workforce.

WORKER’S EDUCATION
AND TRAINING:
Trade unions have so far
focused only on the demands of
their members. It is therefore
essential that labour unions
take on the duty of teaching the
employees a sense of discipline
and accountability for doing
their jobs well. It is important
to ensure that the employees
have a clear understanding of
their rights and privileges and
WELFARE PROGRAMS FOR
EMPLOYEES:
The worker should have the
assurance of his or her safety
as well as for their family.
Along with initiatives to boost
the financial situation, trade
unions may successfully
launch initiatives like the
establishment of educational
facilities, childcare at
workplaces, reading rooms,
libraries, co-operative stores,
gyms, travel facilities etc.
ENGAGING IN SOCIAL
ACTIVITIES:
The majority of unions are
working to ensure financial
advantages for their members.
They avoid participating in
social and cultural activities,
both of which are crucial for
improving the welfare of the
working class. Such
participation in the activities is
crucial for the union's
popularity. Therefore, the
trade union should implement
several initiatives for the
benefit of the average worker
as well.
FOLLOWING THE TRADE
UNION ACT:
Employers should be required
to recognize unions in every
company that employs 100
workers or more. A trade
union should have at least 50%
of the establishment's
workforce as members if it
wants to be recognized as a
negotiating agent. By secret
ballot or review of
membership records, the
union's representative
character may be determined.
The government should
formally provide the
recognized union with several
exclusive rights and facilities.
The minority union should
only be permitted to speak on
behalf of employees in
situations involving
termination or discharge.
CONCLUSION:
If trade unions have taken
these measures and taken the
necessary steps they will
certainly succeed and
strengthen the cooperation
among the members. This will
provide a better edge for the
union to negotiate with the
management, at the same time
improves the relationships
with the employers through
this constructive approach.

the union stronger.

at TISCO, Jamshedpur, is worth
mentioning: -

Jamshedpur, there hasn't been a
strike related to a labour issue in
more than 50 years. The Tata
Workers' Union, the official union in
Jamshedpur, enjoys such strong
relations with the management that
when an attempt was made to
nationalize the business in 1978 by
an interested politician, the union,
acting independently, strongly
objected to the proposal to the Prime
Minister.
