Catalogue of chemical analyses of major elements in the rocks of the crystalline basement of Estonia, Geological Survey of Estonia, Tallinn, 94 pages. ‘The crystalline basement of Estonia belonging to the south-eastem slope of the FennoscandianBaltic Shield lies under the cover of Neoproterozoic, Paleozoic and Quaternary caver of sedimentary rocks and sediments in the depth of ~100-200 m in northem and up to ~$00-600 m in southern Estonia. It is represented by the Paleoproterozofe metamorphic and igneous rocks belonging to the Svecofennian cycle of folding. In the area of about 45 000 sg, km_ there are up f0 500 drill holes (main part of the drill holes locating in norchem Fstonia) penetrating the basement rocks. The drill holes were drilled, and the core described and sampled mainly in the course of deep geological mapping of the crystalline basement of northern Estonia, less in the course of regional geological mapping at scales 1:200 000 and 1:50 000. In this work chemical analyses of major components (SiO, TiOs, ALOs, FeyO3, FeO, MnO, MgO. CaO, 4:0, Kz0, P20, Sai, COz , LOI) in 1689 samples fiom 365 drill holes are presented. The analyses we cauried out (using traditional techniques of "wet chemistry") mainly in the Inboratory of the Geological Survey of Estonia during last 35 years. Besides the chemical composition of samples, one can get information about the depit of sampling, rock type, form of geological body, degree of migmatiztion and weathering, existence of cataclaseylonitization; references on sampling, reports and publications, analysts, laboratories and time of analysis, The work consists also important data about the sampled drill holes: code and name, belonging of the drill hole to & certain structural-geological zone, massif of igncous rocks and/or a more thoroughly studied atea coordinates (latitude, longitude and altitude), altitude ofthe upper surface ofthe basement, depth ofthe drill hole, thickness of the crystalline basement’s rocks penetrated by the drill hole, thickness of the weathering crust, reference to the work inthe course of which the dril hole was dled. GEOLOGICAL OVERVIEW... TABLE 1, CATALOGUE OF THE SAMPLED DRILL HOLES...... TABLE 2. CATALOGUE OF CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF ROCKS. INDEX OF ROCKS... REFERENCES... INTRODUCTION Research of chemical composition of rocks of the crystalline basement of Estonia became possible only after drilling deep drill holes. Single deep wells for water supply were drilled already at the end of previous century but the rocks were not analysed chemically at that time. The first deep drill holes with special purpose of studying the rocks of basement were drilled in 1937-1939 in connection with prospecting iron ores in the area of the Johvi magnetic anomaly. The first chemical analyses of basement rocks originate from this time. Before the year 1960 all together 10 drill holes penetrating into the rocks of the basement were drilled. Some analyses of major components of the basement rocks were also carried out but the results of these analyses are of problematic value. Part of important components were not determined, so that there was no possibility to check up whether the sum of major components really forms ~100 % ‘The period of the most intensive studies of the basement of Estonia fell in the interval 1960-1990 when systematic state geological mapping of Estonia at scale 1:200 000 (1958- 1975) [34-41, 55, 78, 87, 95-97] and deep geological mapping of the crystalline basement of northern Estonia at scale 1:200 000 (1967-1991) (31, 43, 56, 51, 53, 58, 60, 68, 71, 83, 84] ‘was cartied out. Mainly during these works, partly also in the course of large scale (1:50 000) ecological mapping [32, 73-75, 88] and drilling of hydrogeological wells (27-30, 65, $9, 92- 94], in the period 1960-1990 485 drill holes penetrating the basement rocks were drilled. The quantity of drill core (34975 m) of basement rocks of these drill holes forms about 97.55 % of all the drill core characterizing the crystalline basement of Estonia. Crystalline basement of six areas was studied much more thoroughly than the whole territory (See Fig. 1): the Johvi area [31, 56, 90] in connection with prospecting iron ores, the Uljaste, Assamalla and Haljala areas [50, 68] in connection with prospecting copper, lead and ine, the Maardu (80, 81] and Kardla [26, 39, 42, 82, 84] areas in connection with prospecting granites as building materials. The Kirdla area tumed out to be one of the most interesting geological objects in Estonia because of existing there a buried impact structure — the Kardla meteorite crater (9, 85]. In the period of extensive regional geological works in the laboratory of GSE techniques of traditional silicate analysis (“wet chemistry”) was assumed and analyses of relatively high quality were produced. Therefore, the overwhelming majority of chemical analyses included in this catalogue is carried out in the laboratory of the Geological Survey of Estonia in the period 1965-1990. Data characterizing chemical composition of the crystalline basement of Estonia are dispersed in different publications and many manuscript reports, but a great deal of them has not been accessable for interested users until now. As no substantial widening of the basement studies of Estonia including drilling and getting new core material can be foreseen in nearest decades, it became suitable to collect all the existing results of analyses and compile a corresponding data base for general use. The idea is realized in the course of project “Geochemical map of the crystalline basement of the surrounding area of the Gulf of Finland” cartied out in cooperation between the Geological Survey of Estonia (Tallinn) and the Geological Survey of Finland (Helsinki). Authors succeeded to get together results of about 2500 analyses of major components in basement’s rocks, but about 700 of them are not ineluded in this catalogue because of different reasons, mostly because of problematical quality of the analysis whether part of important components (Na, K, Al) were not determined, whether some samples were later reanalysed with better quality. In some cases doubts arose in connection with primary classifying of the rock type of samples, especially if comparing determinations of different authors. The factual material of this catalogue is included into two tables (Lables 1 and 2) accompanied by the index of rocks and list of references. Table 1 contains general data about the sampled drill holes, Table 2 contains the results of individual analyses, Tables | and 2 can be connected with the help of drill hole codes identic for both tables. As drill hole codes letter(s)number(s) and number(s)tletter(s) combinations of symbols are used. Codes consisting of only letters of alphabet are used in case if drill hole has no primary number Codes consisting of only numeric symbols are used if with this number there exists only one drill hole penetrating the basement rocks. If there are more drill holes with the same number, number(s)+letter(s) combination is used. Letter(s):number(s) combination is used for drill holes drilled in the course of deep geological mapping of crystalline basement (F-series of drill holes) or marine geological works (M-series of drill holes). The core of drill holes of the F-series, all located in northem Estonia, forms the main part of the drill core of basement tocks of Estonia. In Table 1 every sampled drill hole is characterized, besides its code and name of the place of location, by its belonging to a certain structural-geological zone (Alutaguse, Johvi, Tallinn, Tapa, South-Estonian or West-Estonian; see Fig. 1), massif of igneous rocks (see Key to Table 1) and/or more thoroughly studied area (Assamalla, Haljala, Johvi, Kiidla, Mardi Uljaste; see Fig. 1); coordinates (latitude, longitude and altitude of the drill hole mouth) and more important data characterizing drill hole and. its geological section: altitude of the upper surface of the crystalline basement, depth of the drill hole, thickness of penetrated basement rocks, thickness of the weathering crust. The work in the course of which the drill hole was drilled and/or primarily described is referred, Table 2 consists of two different halfs located side by side, Order number located in the left side of both halfs of the table facilitates orienting in the table. In the left half of the table drill hole code (identic with that in Table 1) and depth of the sampling place are shown. Knowing general data about the drill hole (see Table 1) and depth of the sampling (see Table 2), every sample is spatially uniquely specified including the location of the sample in relation to important geological boundaries: location on the geological section, distance from the upper surface of the basement, location in the relation to the weathering crust. Sample is characterized by name of main rock type and its code, Used classification of rocks (see section Index of rocks) proceeds in part of igneous rocks from the IUGS classification [12]. Four additional codes (see Key to the Table 2) characterize (in case of igneous rocks) the form of magmatic body (massif or vein), degree of migmatization (in case of metamorphic rocks), degree of weathering and existance of cataclase/mylonitization. Body of igneous rock is classified as massif in case if all or overwhelming part of the section is represented by rock ‘whose wider spread can be supposed also according to gravity and/or magnetic field. Degree of migmatization shown for metamorphic rocks is quite conventional. ‘Migmatization is not outlined if share of neosome forms from rock not more than 5-10% Rock is classified as slightly migmatized one (M1) if neosome forms ~10-20% of rock Intermediate degree of migmatization (M2) comesponds to case if neosome forms ~20-50 % of rock, and strong migmatization (M3) is shown in case if neosome forms ~50-70% of rock Ifneosome forms more than ~70-80% of rock term migmatite or migmatite granite is used. Degree of weathering shown in Table 2 is also quite conventional. In cases when degree of weathering is not shown, rocks are practically fresh and the hypergenetic 5 transformations (if existing) appear only on the surfaces of fissures or as separate small spots. The first stage of weathering (W1) includes hard rock with primary structure and texture, but ‘minerals are partly decomposed. The rock of the second siage of weathering (W2) is soft, loosened, consists mainly of clayey products of weathering; main features of the initial rock are remained. The rock of the third stage of weathering (W3) is a clayey matter which has entirely lost structure and texture of initial rock. In_ columns References works are referred in the course of which core was sampled and/ore samples analysed (R2), first (R3) or last time (R4) published in manuscript report, or first (RS) or last time (R6) published in print. Reference R7 shows analyst and laboratory, and R8 — year of producing the analysis. References R2...R7 are corresponding to order numbers of references in section References while reference R8 shows directly the year of producing the analysis (194). In the right half of the Table 2 contents of analysed components are given in weight %. Empty cell of the table shows that corresponding component is not determined. Sum of determined components (column Total) includes values of SiO3, TiO2, Al,Os, Fe:0s, FeO, MnO, MgO, CaO, Naz, K20, P20s, S ye and LOI (loss of ignition at 950-1000° C). In case if FexOs and FeO are not determined separately, instead of them column Total includes total iron (Fe;0s,q.) calculated as FeO; Content of CO; (if determined) is included in LOI and is not included separately in column Toral. Table 2 contains analyses of more or less fresh rocks sum of determined components of which lies in interval 100:41.5% and LOI of silicate rocks is less than 3%. In certain cases (carbonate, graphite and sulphide consisting rocks) this rule is ignored. Hi generally characteristic to weathered rocks, corresponds in these cases to higher contents of these minerals and may be not connected with higher degree of weathering. In case of high content of sulphur in sample sum of determined components may essentially exceed 100 %. It depends on the citcumstance that part of sulphur may evaporate during ignition, As a result, 2 part of sulphur is included in sum twice: in content of total sulphur determined directly, and as an unknown part of sulphur included in LOI. Nevertheless, this circumstance does not influence the trustworthiness of determination of other components. Drill holes in Tables 1 and 2 are sorted in order of their codes, analyses inside one drill hole (in Table 2) ~ in ascending order of depths. Index of rocks facilitates using the table of analyses while searching for groups of rocks a user is interested in. In addition to the printed version of the catalogue, one can buy a digital version of it which enables processing the data without need of their input once again. The digital version includes additional columns with data which did not find room in the printed version: orthogonal coordinates of drill holes in the Pulkovo 1942 system, nomenclature of topographic map sheet, existence and place of preservation of the drill core, primary geological and laboratory numbers of sample, unified geological identification number of sample, code of rock group corresponding to the section Index of rocks. Columns with data from Table | are added to Table 2, so that both tables together form a united data matrix easy processable by usual programs (e.g. FoxPro, Excel, Minpet) as well as by GIS-systems (e.g. MapInfo). Sedimentary bedrock in its tum is covered by Quatemary sediments. Knowledge about main features of geology and tectonics of the crystalline basement of Estonia can be obtained from many published papers including monographs [5, 22, 23]. Petrography, mineralogy and petrology of the area are more thoroughly discussed, besides the works recorded in previous references, in (8, 14, 19], geochemistry and metallogeny ~ in [13], metamorphism — in [1], radioisotopic ages - in [2, 17, 21]. Four PH.D. theses have been written on the crystalline basement (3, 4, 16, 18]. The following review is based mainly on the last published summary [22] about the crystalline basement of Estonia The Precambrian basement in Estonia consists of two megaunits: the orogenic Svecofennian complex of metamorphic and plutonic rocks, and snorogenic complex of rapakivi granites and related rocks. Paleoproterozoic Svecofennian complex of rocks Metamorphic rocks Comparison of the basement rocks from Estonia, Finland and Sweden has shown that the metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks in Estonia’s basement have many features common with the rocks in the Svecofennian orogenic complexes of the Fennoscandian/Baltic Shield. The orogenic supracrustal rocks of northem Estonia (the Tallinn and Alutaguse structural zones) and the traditional Svecofennian complex are similar in lithology and have the same stage of metamorphism [4, 23]. The rocks of southern and western Estonia differ from the Svecofennian rocks of Scandinavia by their prevailingly mafic to intermediate composition and high-grade metamorphism. The Paleoproterozoic (Svecofennic) age of the eranulite complex of Estonia was dated by Sm-Nd isotopic studies [21]. Petrological signatures of mafic rocks in southem and western Estonia are concordant with those in the northern and north-eastern parts of the territory. Inthe Alutaguse zone (Fig. 1) gneisses containing biotite, cordierite, garnet and sillimanite intercalate with biotite gneisses and form complex of the same name. Within the Alutaguse zone, in the area of Uljaste, Haljala and Assamalla, the basement comprises sulphidic black schists, quartzites, amphibole and pyroxene gneisses, marbles and pyroxene skams. The rocks in the Alutaguse zone derive from the clastic successions with minor sequences of volcanic, sandy and carbonate rocks in the above-mentioned areas. Chemically, the sillimanite-garnet-cordierite gneisses are similar to pelites and originate from pelitic to psammitic sediments, The Tallinn zone is characterized by the stratified Jagala complex of intercalating sillimanite-cordierite and biotite gneisses, intermediate to mafic biotite- homblende gneisses and amphibolites and leucocratic quartz-feldspar gneisses. In the WNW- BSE-trending zones the primarily psammitic to pelitic metasediments intercalate with metavolcanites. The acidic metavoleanites alternate with more abundant intermediate to mafic ones. The basement inthe West-Estonian zone consists predominantly of the same assemblage of rocks as in the Tallinn zone, although the stratified structure is not so well reflected in geophysical anomalies. The rocks characteristic of this zone are rather uniform biotite-homblende gneisses and amphibolites which have been migmatized by granitoids According to the chemical compositions, the amphibolites are referred to basalt, and the gneisses to andesite. Inthe Tapa zone, a rock association, analogous to that of the West-Estonian zone (amphibolites, biotite-hornblende gneisses, in places pyroxene gneisses) occurs. The JShvi zone is composed of the rocks of the Vaivara complex. Magnetite quartzites occur in a limited area together with Ab-rich and pyroxene gneisses. The latter contain interlayers of quartz-feldspar and biotite-amphibole gneisses. The pyroxene gneisses with a variable mineral composition display chamockitic and granitic migmatization. The magnetite quartzites, fine-grained banded rocks in the Johvi area, contain, besides quartz and magnetite, also gamet, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, hornblende, cummingtonite and biotite in different quantities. Inthe South-Estonian zone, the metamorphic complex consists of hypersthene, clinopyroxene and amphibole gneisses, originating from mafic to intermediate voleanites, and possibly from greywackes. It also contains AL-rich and minor members of felsic gneisses. Different pyroxene gneisses which have undergone charnockitic and granitic migmatization, are characteristic of southem Estonia. The chemical composition of the amphibole-pyroxene gneisses corresponds to basalt or basaltic andesite. The increased content of magnetite is a specific feature of the gneisses. Plutonic rocks Traditionally, the granitoid rocks of southem Finland have been classified into four groups, based on their relationship to orogenic movements [15]: synorogenic, late-orogenic, post-orogenic and anorogenic, Practically this classification, often expanded on the whole variety of plutonic rocks, allows classifying the rocks of the crystalline basement of Estonia, also. Synorogenic granitoid complex and associated mafies are rare in Estonia. There are some small granite, granodiorite and quartz-diorite bodies in single drill holes (Aabla, Arukiila, Juminda) in northern Estonia. Possibly synorogenic chamockites-enderbites have been found mainly in South-Estonian and Johvi zones. Drilling in southern and western Estonia has revealed some mafic, probably synorogenic, rocks. There are small gabbro-norite plutons including Yoru, Laeva, Parnu, Vanakitla and several other, some of those with structural orientation. Small bodies of metagabbroids occur in the Tapa zone. Similar rocks in north-eastern Estonia form the considerably large Pada pluton which contains also diorite. ‘The Jare-orogenic granites which form the extensive W-E-striking belt in southern Finland, occur as small bodies and migmatite veins mainly in the basement of northem Estonia, Chemically and mineralogically the migmatite granitoids are granites, syenogranites, granodiorites and tonalites. Two plutons in Estonia (Taadikvere and Virtsu) ate considered to belong to the Svecofennian post-orogenic granitoid group [14]. The Taaditvere pluton in central Estonia consists of quartz monzonitic-granodioritic rocks which are of preferred orientation and contain plagioclase and potassium feldspar phenocrysts. The Virtsw pluton in westem Estonia consists of porphytitic rocks of quartz-monzonite composition which are strongly crushed within the W-E oriented Central Estonian cataclastic zone. 10 Anorogenic complex of rapakivi granites and related rocks A large time span for the Fennoscandian rapakivi and related rocks’ plutonism at 1,65-1.54 Ga was established by isotopic studies [24]. Recently it was stated that the province consists of four subprovinces separated areally and differing in age (20). In the basement of Estonia, plutonic and related rocks of two, Vyborg and Riga-Aland subprovinces occur. Characteristic structures of Myborg subprovince in Estonia are stocks of porphyritic pranites, chemically only little differing from the proper rapakivi [10]. Practically the whole Estonian mainland was influenced by rapakivi magmatism at about 1.65-1.64 Ga. The Naissaar pluton (35*30 km), the northem part of which extends under the Gulf of Finland, is composed of porphyritic granites cut by aplites. According to the chemical and mineral composition this pluton is divided into two phases (25). The Neente pluton (~ 12 km in diameter), the northem part of which is under the Gulf of Finland, is composed of coarse- and medium-grained pinkish-grey porphyritic granites cut by aplites. By chemical and mineral composition, the rocks form possibly two phases, ‘The Marjamaa pluton (35%32 km) is composed of porphytitic granitoids, sometimes cut by aplites [25]. According to the geophysical and drilling data, the pluton has features of ring structure and is accompanied by a smaller satellite. The round central part of the pluton is represented by the most melanocratic and basic type of porphyritic granodiorite (supposed first phase). The second phase is represented by biotite- and homblende-bearing granites. The granites of the third phase — possibly the small individual KJoostri massif (1210 km) in the north-western part of the Marjamaa pluton — are more leucocratic in composition and, in places, have a trachytoidic structure. The Ereda pluton (12.5x7.5 km) is composed of homogeneous porphyritic granites. ‘The mineral and chemical composition of the Ereda granites and the Marjamaa, Neeme and Naissaar leucocratic type of granites have some similar features. The Taebla pluton (~6 km in diameter) is the smallest one, and is recorded in the core of two drill holes. It is composed of homogeneous leucocratic porphyritic granites. The Taebla gxanites are similar to the rocks of the Kloostri pluton and to the second phases of the Naissaar and Neeme plutons. ‘The Abja pluton (XS km) which occurs in the South-Estonian structural zone, is ellips-shaped. In the only drill hole available greenish-grey quartz monzodiorites are eut by potassium granites, The isotopic age (U-Pb, zircon) of the monzodiorites is 1635 4 7 Ma [17] The age of the intersecting granites is 1622 + 7 Ma “The Sigula pluton (31.5 km) in the northem Estonia is a NE-trending body (possibly dike). The one drill core available to date reveals that the pluton consists of dark-grey massive diabase with ophitic texture [23] The largest, Riga rapakivi-anorthosite pluton spread in the basement of western Latvia, West-Estonian Archipelago in the Gulf of Riga and Central Baltic Proper belongs to the Riga-Aland subprovince (1.54-1.59 Ga age group). In cores of three drill holes penet: into the Riga pluton in southwestem Estonia, on the islands of Ruhnu and Saaremaa, the rocks are represented by subvolcanic granite porphyries (granophyzes) with micropegmatite matrix {10}. Exterior to the northem part of the Riga pluton, the Undva drill hole (island Saaremaa) penetrates into a suite of rapakivi-related volcanic rocks [23]. The lower part of the sequence consists of plagioclase porphyrites, and the upper part of quartz porphyries Plagioclase porphyrites have some similarity with the rapakivi-related, mote felsic porphyrites ‘on Hogland and with Dala porphyrites from the Transscandinavian Igneous Belt in central Sweden. u TABLE 1.
