1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of water flushing is to eliminate from piping and equipment all foreign matter
such as metal pieces, welding slag, sand, earth, bolts, tools, etc. which may otherwise plug
pipes, control valves and orifices and cause serious damage to moving parts of equipment.
Water is a good flushing medium to remove and carry away loose foreign material but does
not eliminate rust or other matter bonded to surfaces.

2.0 SCOPE
This procedure applies to raw water system marked on the attached P&ID’s.

3.0 REFERENCES
3.1 Relevant supplier documentation of closed cooling system.

4.0 SAFETY
4.1 Safety instructions and procedures shall be adhered to at all times.
4.2 A briefing to all personnel involved in the activity will be conducted before the work
starts. This is to ensure that every person involved in this activity will be oriented about
the flushing hazards and any required precautionary measures.
4.3 Plant personnel shall wear PPE and adequate protective equipment.
4.4 Special attention must be provided for protecting personnel and equipment. Ensure
adequate devices such as barriers, flagging, danger signs, area restrictions, etc., are used.
4.5 An adequate and reliable communication system shall be available during operation.
4.6 Equipment Lockout/Tag out (LOTO), System and Equipment Safety Tagging/Lockout
must be adhered to.
4.7 Only authorized personnel are permitted in test areas.
4.8 Immediately terminate testing if any unusual noises, smoke or anomalies occur, or if
design limits that may compromise the safety of personnel or equipment are exceeded.
Immediately notify the responsible Commissioning Engineer and the site HSE
representative (if applicable) of such occurrences.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1 ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC PSP Commissioning Team shall be responsible for organizing
the activities listed in this document.
5.2 The pump supplier shall be responsible for commissioning and initial starting and
operating the raw water system relevant procedures.
5.3 ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC PSP Commissioning Team shall be responsible to ensure that
all equipment that may be affected by flushing is adequately protected, e.g. panels,
temporary installations, tools, etc.

6.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
6.1 The Water flushing is considered complete when debris is not visually detected in exiting
water by taken sample.

7.0 PRE-REQUISITES
7.1 Complete piping installation, inspection and hydrostatic test or tests are done and
accepted.
7.2 All relevant instrumentation for pump run is tested and accepted.
7.3 Non essential instrumentation shall be removed or isolated.
7.4 Raw Water Pump system are pre-commissioned, checked and the pumps are ready to run,
and the commissioning report of pumps will be submitting before starting air blowing
7.5 Ensure all required temporary flushing devices as per the procedure are installed.
7.6 It shall be ensured that the water intake level is enough for safe operation of the raw
water pumps.

7.7 A walk down inspection of pipes and equipment will be conducted to check the
following:
7.8  All supports of the system are installed and adequately fixed.
 All drains & vents valves are closed.
 No unwanted leakages.
 All instruments to be isolated or removed during the flushing.
 Pumps discharge instruments to be installed.

8.0 FLUSHING PROCECURE.

8.1 Permanently installed valves shall be used to establish the flushing flow path as per the
attached marked P&ID’s.
 Open valves V006 & V008
 Closed valve V009 & V010
 Motorized Air Release valve to be Opened.
 The Valve V011 to be partially opened to control pump pressure.
8.2 Prior to flushing start, it shall be ensured that water level in intake pay is safe to start.
8.3 Initially the common line shall be flushed by means of operating raw water pumps one by
one.
8.4 Prior to raw water startup vlaves setting are as following:
pump discharge valve V006/V008 to be partially opened.
manual bypass valve V011 to be partially opened.
8.5 Once pump started , open the dicharge valve V006/V008 fully open and control pump
pressure by manual bypass valve V011, motorized air release valve to be closed,
system to be vented through vent valve V401

8.6 Pump pressure to be set as to let max allowable flow rate achieved for enough time
that guarantees system cleanliness.
