LEIGH HUNT'S "Abou Ben Adhem"

May the tribe of Abou Ben Adhem grow!

I awoke one night from a peaceful dream.

And in the moonlight in his bed, he saw

Making it lush and beautiful, like a lily in bloom

An angel writes in a gold book:—

Ben Adhem had been brazen as a result of his exceptional peace.

He also addressed the presence in the session, saying,

"What do you write?"

—The vision arose from its slumber,

And, with a look of complete sweetness,

"The names of those who love the Lord," he replied.

"Is mine one?" Abou inquired. "Not at all," says the narrator.

The angel replied. Abou lowered his voice.

But he remained cheerful, and he said, "So, I beseech thee,

Write me as a man who cares for his fellow man."

The angel wrote something and then disappeared. The next evening
