A Social Media Based Web Application

Abstract— The internet has been a platform for individuals,
groups of people and companies to interact with
one another through the social media. The social media has
truly aided interaction and even other
business services through social networks, forums, blogs,
etc. Forums are now been used as tools/platforms to create
discussions, connect to people (mostly of similar interests)
and as sources of relevant information. This work intends to
make use of forums as tools in helping prospective
university students to make the right decisions about their
choice of career, choice of environment, etc.
Based on an in-depth review of some relevant literatures,
some key requirements have been
considered in the development of a suitable web application.
This online forum will be
developed for students to cater for some of their needs and
solve some of the issues they face
with their choice of career, their course of study, the
accessibility of relevant information about any institution,
etc.

I. INTRODUCTION
Social media entered every segment of our lives, from
private and personal to business and professional, and
companies conduct many of their business activities using
their social media pages. The correct analysis of the social
media data tends to be very important in order to identify
customers’ behaviors and needs for companies, and as well
as to understand needs of society for governments and social
institutions. Analysis of the vast amount of data (big data)
collected from social networks allows companies to gather
useful insights about their products, services, and customers
[1]. The analysis of such data can be used in order to measure
client satisfactions, marketing and promotion success,
customer perception of brand and products, and, moreover, it
can enhance many segments of business from marketing up
to sales. Despite all benefits that come from social media
analytics, many businesses fail to recognize full potential and
power of the social media. Similarly, the governments fail to
recognize the importance of the social media and effects that
it can have on the society. Use the enter key to start a new
paragraph. The appropriate spacing and indent are
automatically applied.
Following article [2] underlies the importance of social
media in everyday life thus the importance of proper
analysis of these ‘communities’. It also proposes several
machine learning algorithms (matrix factorization, neural
networks) and techniques (group recommendation by using
trust neighbors, a tag-based algorithm for the
recommendation) that can be used to address this problem.
In the article [3], Tripathy, Agrawal, and Rath explained
how supervised machine learning methods can be used for

sentiment analysis. Authors have used Naive Bayes and
Support Vector Machine algorithms in order to determine
sentiment in movie reviews. After comparing the accuracy
of these algorithms, they found out that Support Vector
Machine perform better than other used algorithms.
Communication is a basic human need and for that reason,
man has always found a means ofmeeting this need. The
media, which is an umbrella term for various means of
communication,has become an integral part of human life
around the world. The earliest forms of personal
media, speech and gestures, had the benefit of being easy to
use and did not necessarily needcomplex technology
(Idakwo, 2011).
Through the social media, the internet community has
drastically increased over the years. The social media has
become a significant part of today’s modern civilization. It
is a defining trait of how integrated social interactions have
become. The impact of the social media have been seenin
basically five different contexts; news, interactions, political
landscapes, learning and marketing (Guha, 2013).
With over 80 percent of teen Internet users frequenting
social media sites, it’s no wonder the real
world social lives are seeing some changes. Social media is
definitely changing the way people communicate, but in
many ways it’s for the better as we expand our social circles
and explore new horizons through our online connections
(Chopra, 2013).
Every age it has passed through has been based on beliefs
and new technologies, responding to
the needs of individuals anxious to adjust to new forms of
socialization. A time of great change is a period in which
society looks for meaning. Information is already a tool, the
principal tool, which people use to perceive and understand
their environment (Idakwo, 2011).
A. Statement Of Problem
This website is particulary designed for the college students,
teachers , college staff and for upcoming students to resolve
their queries about college with college students and with
alumni also. In this website they can chat with their college
friends , post , share and comment on picture . In this web
application college students can create their community for
college clubs and society and interact with the interested
one. This webiste also helps the upcoming students or
students coming for admission to resolve all their doubts and
questions regarding with college students , alumni and with
teacher , this will help students interaction among
themselves. For accessing this website particulary a college
email-id is needed through which a user can create profile of
his/her and enjoy the benefits of this site. This web
application is a best example of web based applications like
facebook , instagram , twitter.
B . Technologies Used
For UserInterface i.e Loginpage , Dashboard and all the
other ui features we have used technologies like HTML and
React for creating the structure, CSS and BootStrap for
styling the application
Frontend- Html , CSS , Javascript , React Framework
Backend – Node.js, Javascript
Database- Nosql (MongoDB)
B. Objectives
Provides the searching facilities based on various factors.
Such as Users, Shares, Photos, Friends. Users, Videos
capture and modification is not possible. It tracks all the
information of Videos, Posts, Photos etc , Manage the
information of Videos , Shows the information and
description of the Users, Shares , All the fields such as
Users, Shares, Friends are validated and does not take
invalid values , It generates the report on Users, Videos,
Posts , Provide filter reports on Shares, Photos,
Friends ,You can easily export PDF for the Users, Posts,
Photos ,Application also provides excel export for Videos,
Shares, Friends , You can also export the report into csv
format for Users, Videos, Friends , To increase efficiency of
managing the Users, Videos , It deals with monitoring the
information and transactions of Photos. , Manage the
information of Users , Editing, adding and updating of
Records is improved which results in proper resource
management of Users data , Manage the information of
Photos Integration of all records of Friends.
II. LITERATURE REVIEW
A. Inrtoduction to Social Media Concept
Social media is a form of electronic communication which
facilitates interaction based on certain interests and
characteristics. Social media are media for social interaction,
using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques.
Social media use web-based technologies to transform and
broadcast media monologues into social dialogues (Idakwo,
2011).
A social media network platform is one that provides a
medium for interaction by groups of people making it
easy to share information (such as lecture materials, pictures
and ideas) across a circle of people or groups. Statistics has
shown that the use of social network such as Facebook,
Twitter and LinkedIn is on the increase most especially
among young individuals, the crop of which are students of
tertiary institutions (Ikhu-Omoregbe, et al., 2012).
B. History Of Social Media App
According to Idakwo (2011), The Social media started as a
concept many years ago but has
evolved into sophisticated technology. The concept of social
media can be dated back to the use of the analog telephone
for social interaction. The most recognizable use of social
media was through innovative application, an online
dialogue framework, created by Ward Christensen, a
former IBM employee and Randy Suess. Initially, they
envisioned a place where they could immediately contact
their co-employees for announcements, i.e. meetings,
reports, and other affairs, rather than making multiple phone
calls, distributing memos, and the like.
They were looking into creating a computerized bulletin
board, which is why they named the program CBBS
(Computerized Bulletin Board System). Soon enough, more
and more employees contributed their ideas and comments
in the said online community. That event was a momentous
episode in the history of computer and internet. It was the
birth of online social networking. The CBBS platform was
made known to other companies and has been used for
specific purposes.
The Bulletin Board System expanded largely and began
breaking into the mainstream much sooner than it was
planned . It was during the rise of the Internet Service sites
began to flourish. Along with the availability of
internet service to people, many people rummaged to have
themselves acquainted with this new technology. With the
fast response of people to the budding internet community,
the bulletin boards which were usually used by companies
have started to expand their roles by offering their service to
more people around the globe. More and more people joined
the online community with the innate goal of creating an
identity in this space and at the same time exploring the vast
place that is the internet. Because of this, many internet-
savvy companies gave what people wanted- getting to know
more people and sharing common interests and points of
view; that is through websites where they can socialize,
websites which are now referred to as social
networking sites.
C. Review Of Existing Systems
In the 1980s and ’90s, according to “The History of Social
Networking” on the technology news site Digital Trends, the
internet’s growth enabled the introduction of online
communication services such as CompuServe, America
Online, and Prodigy. They introduced users to digital
communication through email, bulletin board messaging,
and real-time online chatting.
This gave rise to the earliest social media networks,
beginning with the short-lived Six Degrees profile uploading
service in 1997.
This service was followed in 2001 by Friendster. These
rudimentary platforms attracted millions of users and
enabled email address registration and basic online
networking.
Weblogs, or blogs, another early form of digital social
communication, began to gain popularity with the 1999
launch of the LiveJournal publishing site. This coincided
with the launch of the Blogger publishing platform by the
tech company Pyra Labs, which was purchased by Google in
2003.
In 2002, LinkedIn was founded as a networking site for
career-minded professionals. By 2020, it had grown to more
than 675 million users worldwide. It remains the social
media site of choice for job seekers as well as human
resources managers searching for qualified candidates.
Two other major forays into social media collapsed after a
burst of initial success. In 2003, Myspace launched. By
2006, it was the most visited website on the planet, spurred
by users’ ability to share new music directly on their profile
pages.
By 2008, it was eclipsed by Facebook. In 2011, Myspace
was purchased by musician Justin Timberlake for $35
million, but it has since become a social media afterthought.
Google’s attempt to elbow its way into the social media
landscape, Google+, launched in 2012. A rocky existence
came to an end in 2018, after the private information of
nearly 500,000 Google+ users was compromised by a data
security breach.
C.(i) The Student Room
The world's largest student community, The Student Room
have attracted students to the site for
help with their studies, advice from their peers and, quite
often, just to have a good conversation.
It is ranked as one of the first 500 visited websites in the
United Kingdom (Alexa, 2014).
It is mainly for universities in the UK like University of East
London, London School of
Economics, University of West London, etc. It has also been
noticed that every year after high
school graduation, students start looking for the right
university, often referred to as the Clearing
Phase, where the traffic to The Student Room increases
significantly. They have also been able
to withstand the surge in traffic anytime the site is fully
active (Gossamer Threads , 2013).
A large part of The Student Room consists of the forum, of
which the major sections are:
1. University Applications
2. University Courses: most subjects have their own sub
forum
3. Universities: most universities or university towns have
their own sub forums
4. Exams
5. Academic Help: at any educational level though mostly
focused on secondary school and
college level; each subject with its own sub forum
6. Gap Years
7. Debate and Discussion: with politics, society, religion,
Model Parliament, Model United
Nations and philosophy sub forums

C.(ii) Google Groups
Google Groups is a service from Google Inc. that provides
discussion groups for people sharing common interests. It
became operational in February 2001, following Google’s
acquisition of Deja’s Usenet archive. A new and redesigned
Google Groups was released in February 2012 with an
updated user interface. A Help Center has also been created
to cater for users with this new interface (Maluniu, et al.,
2013). Google Groups have also served as a platform to
create online and email-based groups. You can either
register/sign-up as a regular participant or an administrator.
Users can either signup/ register as a regular participant or
an administrator. The membership of Google Groups is at
no cost at all, although as of 2013, a Google account is
required. A new and redesigned Google Groups was
released in February 2012 with an updated user interface. A
Help Center has also been created to cater for users with this
new Google Groups interface. A user can also decide the
type of access he/she wants by selecting public,
announcement only, or restricted (Google Groups, 2014)

III. METHODS AND MATERIALS
