SECTION B : Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions.

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystem on Earth. They are
sometimes called the ‘rainforests of the sea’. They can be easily found in shallow, tropical seas.
The oldest corals live 450 million years ago. Corals may look like colourful rocks, or even plants,
but coral they are actually animals. Coral is built by polyps. Polyps are very small creatures that
are related to jellyfish. The only difference is that, coral is stationary. They grow in a colony called
a coral head. Hard corals create the reef by secreting calcium carbonate or limestone which
gradually builds up into a solid structure. Coral grows only a few centimetres a year. It can take
hundreds of years to form a large piece. Not all corals are hard, some are soft, and look like bushes.

When many corals grow close together, it is called a reef. Although reefs only occupy
less than 0.2% of the seabed, yet they can be found in more than 150,000 kilometres of a coastline
in more than 100 countries. Reefs provide very important habitat and other sea creatures.
Thousands of species can be found living on one coral reef. For example, in the Great Barrier
Reef, it contains over 400 species of coral, 1,500 species of fish, 4,000 species of mollusk, and 6
species of turtle. The reef also provides a place for algae and sponges to grow. This provides food
for a variety of creatures such as sea turtle. Without the sea turtles, the algae and sponges would
overgrow, thus preventing the coral from growing and expanding.

Unfortunately, the coral reef ecosystem is a fragile one. Overfishing by humans, ocean
pollution and warming temperatures have all put the world’s coral reefs at risk. Right now, more
than half of the world’s reef systems are in danger of destruction, and if nothing changes, nearly
all the coral in the world will be in danger of dying and disappearing in 15 years.

Fortunately, there are some simple things that you can do to help protect the coral reefs.
First is by managing the water usage. Be careful not to waste water, or pour chemicals down your
drain because eventually, the water you use will reach the ocean and can increase pollution.
Secondly, if you see trash on the ground, please pick it up, and recycle if it is possible; at least the
ASIAN ENGLISH OLYMPIAD

YEAR 7, 8, 9

garbage won’t find its way into the water. Finally, spread as much information as possible to the
people about the coral reefs; let us all be responsible in our daily decision making, and not harm
the coral reefs in the future.

31. Where can we find the coral reefs?

32. What are the causes of the destruction of the coral reefs?

_________________________________________________________________

33. What is the significance of the sea turtles to the reef?

34. Why shouldn’t we pour chemicals down the drain?

school to help educate the students about the coral reefs.
