A tantárgy rövid leírása/Course Description:
A kurzus során a hallgatók megismerkednek a mai angol köznyelv (elsősorban a sztenderd brit
kiejtésváltozat, az ún. RP) artikulációs fonetikájának és fonológiájának alapjaival és alapfogalmaival
(hangkészlet, főbb szabályszerűségek, az íráskép és a kiejtés kapcsolata); a kurzus lehetőséget kínál továbbá
nyelvi adatok elemzésének, fonetikai átírások olvasásának és készítésének gyakorlására is, a Gimson-féle IPA
átírási rendszert használva.
Követelmények: a kurzusra járó hallgatók két zárthelyi dolgozatot írnak a szemináriumokon tárgyalt anyag
alapján, az órákon aktívan részt vesznek és rendszeresen elkészítik a házi feladatokat. A hallgatók összesen
legfeljebb 3x90 percet mulaszthatnak a félév során következmények nélkül. A két zárthelyi dolgozat nem
mulasztható el, azok pótlására csak kivételesen indokolt esetben van lehetőség. A kurzusra kapott érdemjegy
az órai részvétel, a zárthelyi dolgozatok eredménye és a házi feladatok elkészítése alapján áll össze.
A kurzus megtartásának módja távolléti oktatás esetén: a kurzus valós időben zajló online tanórák keretében,
változatlan tartalommal kerül megtartásra.
Értékelés:
2 zárthelyi dolgozat (30% + 30%);
aktív órai részvétel (20%);
a házi feladatok elkészítése (20%).
Érdemjegy:
0–50.99% → 1; 51–60.99% → 2; 61–75.99% → 3; 76–85.99% → 4; 86–100% → 5

The aim of this course is to introduce the terminology and basics of British Received Pronunciation
(segmental inventory, processes, letter-to-sound regularities), to provide practice in analysing data and in
reading and doing phonemic transcription using the Gimsonian IPA.
Requirements: Students attending this course are going to write two achievement tests based on the material
that is covered in the seminars. They are expected to fully participate in the in-class discussions and do their
homework regularly. All students attending this course must understand that they can miss only 3x90
minutes without any further consequences. The two achievement tests can not be missed, retake tests are
allowed exceptionally. Students will be given a final grade based on their contribution to course work, their
test results, and the completion of their home assignments.
If remote education is necessary: real-time, live online seminars will be provided. Topics to be covered will
not change.
Assessment:
2 achievement tests (30% + 30%);
in-class performance (20%);
homework (20%).
Grading policy:
0–50.99% → 1; 51–60.99% → 2; 61–75.99% → 3; 76–85.99% → 4; 86–100% → 5

Articulatory organs. The English consonant system: obstruents
and sonorants, major phonotactic constraints, voice-assimilation
(esp. the suffixes -s and -ed).
Allophonic rules and regularities: L-darkening, aspiration.

The distribution of /r/ in RP: the r-dropping rule, linking-r and
intrusive-r. Yod-dropping.
The BrE vowel system: quality and quantity, monophthongs and
diphthongs, their distribution. Vowels in unstressed syllables.
Weak forms of function words.
Mid-term test: weeks 1–4.
Tense and lax vowels. Structure dependence of phonological
regularities: Trisyllabic Laxness.
Pre-R developments: Pre-R Breaking, Pre-R Broadening and the
Carrot-Rule.
