GERMANIC describes a family of languages that themselves belong to the greater


Indo-European group. English is a Germanic language (German is also a Germanic
language).

GERMAN refers to the language varieties and people of the nation of Germany

2.Are the words SPECIAL PHILOLOGY and GERMANIC PHILOLOGY


synonyms?

SPECIAL PHILOLOGY is one of the subjects which establishes the background of a


specialist in philology. It used to be understood as a science studying all types of not
only texts but also material remnants. 

And GERMANIC PHILOLOGY is a humanitarian academic discipline that studies


Germanic languages (English, German, Dutch, Frisian, Swedish, Danish, etc.)
(linguistics) and German-language literature (literary studies) in historical terms and
in their current state.

3. What is the subject matter of Germanic philology?

Germanic philology studies the languages of the Germanic group: their origin,
development and structure; mutual connections, common laws; tendencies of
development and interconnections with the languages of other groups.

Are these examples of synchrony or diachrony?

When people had more opportunities to change their social class in the 1600s, they
started using the words thee and thou less often. If they didn't know the social class of
the person they were addressing, they'd use the formal pronoun you to be safely
polite, leading to the demise of thee and thou in English. This would be a diachronic
look. A description of the words and how they were used at the time in comparison to
the pronoun you would be a synchronic description.
