Critique of Political Dynasties

This editorial cartoon from 1916 depicts a politician, Dr. Santos, passing his crown to his brother-in-law Dr. Barcelona, showing the practice of political dynasties. The cartoon comments on how political dynasties were an issue even over a century ago, with power and positions being inherited within families rather than earned, making it difficult for other candidates to have fair opportunities and risking the perception that political roles are treated as a family business rather than public service.

This editorial cartoon was published in “The Independent” on May 20, 1916.

The
cartoon shows a politician from Tondo, named Dr. Santos passing his crown to his
brother-in-law, Dr. Barcelona. A Filipino guy was trying to stop Santos, telling the latter
to stop giving Barcelona the crown because it is not his to begin with.

This cartoon also shows what happening todays in the politics. Political Dynasty
is the best representation in this cartoon. Political dynasties occur when a succession of
influential people come from the same family or line. The practice of a politician's son,
wife, brother, sister, or other relative running for the same office is one that Filipinos
have described as common.

Political dynasty is a toxic behavior that occurs in the politics. This makes the
other candidate or person to prove their worth. If the roots of the starts of the position is
a corrupts means the family only making the politics to be a business not a service to
the people.
