1. Great Backyard Bird Count
(GBBC) 2023 released
 GBBC India is the Indian
implementation of the Global Great
Backyard Bird Count, which runs
for 4 days every February, this time
from 17–20 February 2023. Indian
birders have participated in GBBC
since the event was launched
worldwide in 2013. 1,069 species
have been recorded in the 2023
edition of GBBC.

together to increase collective
knowledge about bird distribution
and populations.

1. India is second only to the United
States in terms of uploading the
2023 checklist. Canada and
Australia are in third and fourth

Colombia and Ecuador and Brazil
and Mexico are in fourth and fifth

3. West Bengal (498), Uttarakhand
(428) and Arunachal Pradesh (407)
reported the highest number of
species under the Great Backyard
Bird Count (GBBC) 2023 among 35
states and union territories.

 India was among 190 countries to
participate in GBBC 2023, an annual
event that brings together birders,
students and nature enthusiasts to
count birds around them.
 GBBC was started in the year 1998.
GBBC in India is organized by Bird
Count India.

3. A German man becomes the third
person in the world to be cured of
HIV by a 'bone marrow transplant'

Immunodeficiency Virus)', with no
signs of the virus even four years
after stopping the drug.

marrow transplants from
individuals with specific HIV-
resistant genetic mutations.
 Doctors selected a donor with a
genetic mutation called CCR5-delta
32 that renders the carrier virtually
immune to HIV.
 Earlier, a patient from Berlin,
Timothy Ray Brown, was the first
person to be cured of HIV after two
stem cell transplants in 2007 and
2008 to treat blood cancer.
 Also in the year 2019 similar results
were replicated in patient Adam
Castillejo of London. Two more
cases of successful treatment were
reported in the year 2022.

receptor 5 (CCR5-delta) 32
mutation:
 HIV (Human Immunodeficiency
Virus) primarily attacks the CD4
immune cells in the human body,
reducing the person's ability to
fight secondary infections.
 CCR5 receptors on the surface of
CD4 immune cells act as a gateway
for the HIV virus.

 Its entry is effectively blocked by
the CCR5-delta 32 mutation, which
prevents these receptors from
growing on CD4 cells.
 Only 1 percent of people in the
world have two copies of the CCR5-
delta 32 mutation—which means
they get it from both of their
