PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION 5.1 AP-106 Flight Control System Figure 2 is a functional block diagram of a maximum configuration AP-106 Flight: Control System using the AP-106 Autopilot, FD-112C/V light Director In- icator, and the PN-101 Compass System. The follow- ing paragraphs describe the operation of each eompo- nent in tho system. SAL Blight Director System SALI PD-HRC/V Blight Director Indicators The FD-112C and PD-112V consist of three sections: the attitude indicator, the course indi- ator, and fault monitor and display. ‘The major difference between the PD-1126 and FD-112V is that the FD-112C_ uses separate pitch and roll command bars while the FD-I12V uses a single ‘V-command har. The attitude indicator (figure 3) receives d-wire pitch and roll data from the vertical gyro. This data is applied to servo loops within the indieator that position the pitch and roll attitude displays, ‘The roll and pitch steering signals from the autopilot are slso applied to the attitude indieator to position the pitch and roll command bars. ‘The course indieator (figure 4) receives -wire heading data from the flux detector and magnetic heading data from the slaving accessory. This data is applied to a servo loop that positions the compass card display and provides a slaving signal for the slaving accessory. Course and heading data, input through the course and head- ing controls, is sent to the eomputer/eontrol and is also displayed on the course indicator. "The fault monitor and display section monitors the directional gyro, vertical reference gyro, navigation receiver, glideslope receiver and the computer/control, and provides fault flags to indicate improper operation, Caution The AP-106/AP-107 Flight Control System has a very high degroe of functional integri- ty, Nevertheless, the user must recognize that it is not practical to provide monitoring. for all conceivable system failures and, 12 however unlikely, erroneous operation could oeeur without a fault indication, It.is the responsibility of the pilot to detect sueh an occurrence by means of eross-checks with redundant or correlated Information available in the cockpit. possible that S.LL2 382D-11( )/12() Vertical Reference ‘The 882D-11( }/12( ) senses the pitch and roll atti- tude of the aireraft and provides this data to the FD- M2C/V, 918K-1/1A, and 8297-1, 5.1.2 PN-I01 Pictorial Navigation System 5.20 3326-4 Directional Gyro ‘The 882E-4 senses any change in the aircraft direction within the horizontal plane and pro- vides this data to the slaving accessory in the compass system. ‘This directional data is the dynamic or short-term portion of the magnetic heading, S22 BBAVG/BWAGG-L Flux Detector and Compensator ‘The 829A-2G senses tho direction of the earth's magnetic field and supplies this heading data to the slaving synchro in the flight director. The output of the slaving synehro is returned to the slaving accessory. ‘The 823A-3G-1 compensates for any irregularities in the earth's magnetic field caused by electrical wiring or the airframe. 5.1.2.3 3284-36 Slaving Accessory ‘The 328A-3G combines directional data from the gyro with the slaving signal and removes any directional error between the two. This cor- rected magnetic heading data is applied to the flight director to drive the synchro motor that Positions the compass card and heading synehros. 5.13 AP-106 Autopilot System $13.1 919K-1/1A Computer|Control (562C-13/ 13A and 6148-42/42A) The 91SK-1/1A (or 562C-18/18A and 614R-12/42A) consists of four sections: The pitch computer, roll ‘computer, trim controller, and the mode selection logic. This data is used to generate the pitch command applied to the elevator program- mer. The pitch computer also generates a pitch steering signal that is applied to the flight director to position the pitch command bar. ‘The roll computer receives roll data from the vertical gyro and_pitch/turn control, heading and course data from the flight director, and VOR/LOC data from the gain programmer to generate the roll command and roll steering signal. ‘The roll command is applied to the ail- cron programmer to control the ailerons, and the steering signai is applied to the flight diree- tor to position the roll command bar. ‘The trim controller determines when the ele- vator servo is holding force (aireraft out of trim) and generates appropriate trim commands to cause the trim serve to relieve the force held by the elevator servo (autopilot engaged). ‘The trim controller also lights the out-of-trim indieators on the front of the 913K-1/1A or 614E- 42/42A whenever the trim servo is driven by the trim controller with the autopilot engaged, or when the u aircraft must he manually trimmed with the autopilot disengaged. ‘The mode selection iogic consists of the mode selection indieator switches, autopilot engage/ disengage switch, and associated logic cireuits required to control the overall operation of the autopilot system. 5.1.8.2 161H-1 Gain Programmer ‘The 161H-1 consists of five gain programming sections and a mode logic and remote annunei- ator drive section. ‘The rudder, elevator, and aileron programming sections provide IAS gain programming of the three basic avtopilot command signals before they are applied to their respective servos. ‘The altitude and IAS programmer provides IAS gain programming of the altitude error signal from the altitude controller. This section also contains the IAS hold mode circuits, ‘The GS/VOR/LOC programmer provides radio altitude programming of the glideslope signal, all angle adaptive capture for VOR and LOC, and DME programming of the VOR signal with over- station smoothing. The 8297-1 also provides a visual indication of the yaw rate and slip. Revised 27 June 1984 5.13.4 6IME-AI/41A Pitch/Turn Control ‘The 614H-41/41A is a manual control for entry of pitch and roll commands into the autopilot system by ‘the pilot. 5.1.3.5 590A-6/6A Altitude Control ‘The 590A-6/6A senses any change in altitude of the aircraft and provides the altitude and IAS program- mer with an altitude error signal during the altitude ‘hold mode. description 523-0764604 5.1.3.6 590B-2 Airspeed Sensor ‘The 590B-3 provides the indicated airspeed data required for IAS gain programming and the LAS hold mode. 5.1.3.7 334C-9/94/1 Primary Servo ‘The 884C-9/9A/11 servos position the aireraft control surfaces in response to commands received through the gain programmer from the computer/eontrol and the turn and slip indicator. 5.1.3.8 334D-6( ) Trim Servo ‘The 334D-6( ) positions the aireraft trim surfaces in response to commands from the trim controller or B the pilot. The 334D-6( ) also provides a +28-V de trim in motion signal to operate a visual or aural annunci- ator. 5.2 AP-107 Flight mntrol System Figure 5 is a functional block diagram of a maximum configuration AP-107 Flight Control System using the AP-107 Autopilot, FD-L06P/PV Flight Director, and MCS-107/107V Magnetic Compass System. The following paragraphs describe the operation of each component in the system, 5.2.1 FD-106P/PV Flight Directors The FD-106P is a panel-mounted horizon indi- cator with an integral vertical gyro with elec- tric drive. The FD-L06PV is identical to the FD-106P except that the vertical gyro is vacuum driven. The flight directors provide a visual indication of the aircraft's pitch and roll attitude with respect to an artificial horizon. They also provide piteh and roll data to the computer/ control, and roll data to the turn and slip indi- cator. Optional pitch and roll steering com- mand bars are available to provide a visual indication of the autopilot pitch and roll com- mand signals, Warning flags are provided to indicate failure of the electrically driven gyro and failure of the computer/eontrol, 5.2.2. MCS-107/107V Magnetic Compass System 5.22.1 3234-5 Flux Detector ‘The 323A. senses the direction of the earth's magnetic field and supplies this heading data to 16 the slaving circuit in the directional gyro indi- cator, 2 S31P-I/1¥ Directional Gyro Indicator The 331P-1 is a panclmounted direetional gyro with a visual compass indicator and electrically driven gyro. The 331P-1V is the same as the 331P-1 except that the gyro is vacuum driven. Both directional gyra indicators consist of three sections: the directional gyro, slaving circuit, and the compass and heading indicator. ‘The directional gyro senses any change in the aircraft direction within the horizontal plane and provides this data to the slaving circuit. This data is the dynamic or short-term portion of the magnetic heading. The slaving circuit combines the directional data from the gyro with the heading data from the flux detector and removes any directional error between the two. This corrected magnetic heading data is used to position the compass card in the indicator section. The correeted magnetic heading is also combined with desired heading data entered by the pilot through the heading control to provide heading data for the computer/control, 3 327C-3 Staring Indicator ‘The 327C8 provides a visual indication of the direction and amount the directional gyro is being slaved. 5.2.9 AP-107 Autopilot System Operation of the AP-107 Autopilot System is the same as that described for the AP-106 (para- graph 5.1.8) except that the input/output signals of the 913K-1/1A Computer/Control or 562C-18/13A Autopilot Computer are not programmed by the i61H-1 Gain Programmer and the IAS hold mode of operation is not available. 6, CONTROLS AND INDICATORS Figures 6 through 12 illustrate the controls and indicators for the equipment used in the AP-106/AP- 107 Flight Controt System.
