GEE1: Factors to Success

SMALL IDEAS FORM BIG SUCCESSES

Success is a seven-letter word that is filled with many other words such as
dream, passion, determination, courage, hard work, persistence, perseverance,
confidence, and many more other words. For people, the measurement of success
varies. A small success to some may already be a big one to some. Therefore, we can
say that the idea of success is most likely subjective since it varies on the perception of
each one of us. However, it also has this common denominator, from which it came, an
idea. Whether it may have been a big or small success, it all came from small ideas.
The question is, how can we form this small idea into a big success? Is this small idea
what you only need to have this big success? With these questions, we will form the
question, what are the factors that have caused the success of well-known
personalities, most specifically, entrepreneurs?

There are tons of successful people that have spoken about how they have
reached their success, and the first of these people I would like to mention is Kevin O’
Leary. He is a successful Canadian businessman who was known by many as the
slightly mean investor, who was featured in the TV show “Shark Tank”. According to
Tompkins (2022), ever since he engaged in a string of successful investments and
business ventures, he now holds an estimated net worth of $400 million per Celebrity
Net Worth. Thus, there’s this talk he has done wherein O’Leary said that a thing that
would help you to be a successful entrepreneur is to stop being an impulsive buyer. We
must stop buying things we don’t actually need, sometimes we can’t even afford them,
causing us to save money and just spend it on unnecessary things. He, then, continued
talking and gave each people’s closet to be an example. He said that let’s look at our
closets, and deep within it is surely where the clothes we don’t wear anymore lie. These
clothes at the bottom of our closets may have been in a form of money, instead of them
being just clothes at the bottom and not being worn by the owner. This statement struck
me first since it’s very relatable, in a way. Therefore, being an impulsive buyer is one of
the traits that pull people away from succeeding. Because of this, we must learn how to
always pay back the money we’ve spent.

We can further elaborate on the statement of Mr. O’Leary and relate it to our
impulsive decision-making. We must learn to always control our decisions and don’t do
things that aren’t necessary for us to reach success in life. Just as how the famous
saying goes, “work now, play later,” which teaches us doing the important thing first is a
must and once we’ve accomplished this work, we can, then, play later with a more
stress-free and worry-free feeling. Starting this habit and doing it consistently in life,
especially while you’re still young, will help you tremendously as an adult, especially if
you’re an aspiring entrepreneur (Flixonix, 2011).

Moreover, there’s another factor I’ve caught up on while listening to the talk of
Ratan Tata, who is a successful Indian industrialist and was also the previous chairman
of Tata Sons. According to some reports, Ratan Tata’s income per day is $347, which is
also $10,757 per month, and $129,084 per year (Digital news, 2022). In this talk, he
said, all successful companies we could ever think of came from ideas that people felt
something could be done with and make a difference. Therefore, another factor to
success is to always think that you can make a difference. Because of this positive
mindset, it sets your mind to be confident and courageous in doing this certain idea you
are thinking that should be done and will make a difference, resulting in a big success.

Another factor to success of an entrepreneur that we can take from Ratan Tata is
to always let humility be your best defense. Yes, I’ve said that confidence is also
necessary to reach success in life, however, too much confidence in yourself is
dangerous as well because, at some point, it can even harm others which may hinder
you from succeeding. Thus, keep in mind to not consider yourself successful based on
the prosperity you have achieved and attained for yourself, instead, you must aim to go
home satisfied because you’ve made a difference.

Being well-rounded is another factor to success of an entrepreneur, said Sundar

Pichai, an Indian American business executive and the chief executive officer (CEO) of
Alphabet Inc. and Google. I believe that being well-rounded is, indeed, an important
factor to succeed since when we say to be well-rounded, this basically means that we
should be shaped roundly that whenever or wherever challenges may attack us, we are
ready to face them. We must learn how to adapt to our surroundings easily because this
will help us to be flexible as much as possible and teach us new different skills and
ways how to overcome other problems.

In addition to this, we can also refer to the statement of Jack Ma as another

factor to success which states that we must follow a good boss. Take note that a good
and responsible boss will teach you differently, in a way that you will certainly learn and
even grow fast and efficiently. Having that said, we must never get scared of making
mistakes because these are our steppingstones toward success. Just as Jack Ma has
said, “any mistake is a wonderful revenue,” which means that even though we have
failed, these are not losses but gains as we have learned new things and realizations.

Going back to the question at the start, how do we turn this small idea into a big
success? Is having a small idea only what we need in order to succeed? Well, the
answer is no. Ideas may be the ones that can kickstart your success, but these aren’t
only the factors and foundation one must need to succeed. Yes, small ideas are where
big successes came from, but this is not only the factor to success. Just like when you
had an idea you would like to write in your journal, ideas aren’t only used because you
also need the pen, paper, and strength to write the idea. In order to reach success, just
like the previous example, what we must need are all the underlined factors above with
a mix of dream, passion, determination, courage, hard work, persistence, perseverance,
and confidence on top, which are all associated with the seven-letter word, success.

To end this discussion, I would like to leave you the famous quotation related to
one I deem to be the most successful, “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy
thoughts shall be established,” from Proverbs 16:3.
