The Order of Holy Communion Musical Setting by Healey Willan Authorized by the Commission on Worship, Liturgics, and Hymnology of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod Concordia Publishing House Saint Louis, Missouri troduction When The Lutheran Hymnal was published in 1941 many rejoiced be- se it was now possible to worship in any of our churches throughout the rth American continent and yet use the same Liturgy. However, within hort time worshipers began to complain about monotony and the deaden- ‘effect produced by the use of the same setting year in and year out. addition, from the very beginning, church musicians and others criticized th the lack of unity of style as well as the quality of some of the music the Service. Laymen often complained that the settings were too high J that they were not able to sing with ease and enthusiasm. ‘These complaints and criticisms continued to come with increasing reg- rity, and there has been agitation on the part of laymen, church musicians, 1 pastors for something different. Some would replace the Liturgy itself fn free forms, Others would mutilate the Liturgy by omitting parts. St ers sought different solutions. Unfortunately, none of the methods tried ve the problem. When used by thoughtful worshipers, The Liturgy is never notonous. While it is true that the Ordinary of the Service is the same mm Sunday to Sunday (except for certain seasonal changes), itis also true tthe Propers of the Service, which change from week to week, not only wide the specific themes for the day but also give new and varying em- uses {0 the unchanging parts of the Service. For example, on Christmas, ster, and Pentecost a thoughtful worshiper will sing the Gloria in Excelsis J the other parts of the Ordinary with different thoughts in mind and in ifferent spirit because of the different emphases and themes on these three sis. This in itself would be reason enough for providing different musical tings of the Service. Why should the same musical setting be used on ent Sunday, on Christmas Day, on Good Friday, on Easter Sunday, and ‘a Day of Humiliation and Prayer, when in each case the spirit and char- er of the day varies so greatly? ‘Thoughtful Christians thus realize that s not the text but rather the musical setting of the Liturgy which needs ety. ‘Throughout the history of the Christian Church it has been the practice the Church to use a variety of musical settings for the Ordinary of the vice. Most of the great, and many of the lesser, composers of the Church ve composed settings of the Ordinary — {rom the numerous Gregorian tings in unison to the many-voiced settings of di Lasso, Palestrina, Byrd, xtehude, Bach, and the contemporary settings by Vaughan Williams, ster, Poulenc, and others. tis in keeping with the best traditions of the Lutheran Church to vary , musical settings of the Service and to provide settings which fit the son, For various reasons this tradition has not been followed in the Lu- ran churches in America, However, complaints and criticisms of the esent musical setting indicate that the time is ripe for a return to a more althy tradition of the Lutheran Church. Therefore, in the spirit of the pric “The music of the Service is not a part of the Liturgy and may be ered as circumstances permit or require” (The Lutheran Liturgy, p. 418), , music editors of Concordia Publishing House, in conjunction with the smbers of the Commission on Worship, Liturgies, and Hymnology, com- ind to our churches the two new musical settings of the Service by Healey llan and Jan Bender. May they be used in the spirit of Christian liberty glorify Christ and to edify His body, the Chureh. Eastertide 1959 ‘Water E. "In addition to supplying each member of the congregation with a copy (which may be pasted into the front part of the hymnal), we sug- ‘gest the following possibilities for teaching the music to the congregation 1, Teach the music to all of the choirs. The choirs should learn the music so thoroughly that they can sing it from memory. 2. Teach the music to the day school children and the older Sunday school children. 3. Teach the music at meetings of youth organiza- tions, men’s clubs, voters’ assemblies, ladies’ organiza- tions, couples’ clubs, ete. 44, Conduct congregational rehearsals after services for at some other convenient time. These should be no longer than 10 minutes. At such rehearsals the choir and organ should lead. Follow this procedure: a) Begin with something short, like the Kyrie. ) Choir sings the Kyrie once with organ accom- paniment, ©) Choir sings the Kytie twice without accompani- ment, 4) Ask the congregation to join the choir in sing- jing the Kyrie with organ accompaniment. ©) Ask the women and children to sing the Kyrie with the treble voices of the choir and organ accompaniment. 1) Ask the men of the congregation to sing the Kyrie with male voices of the choir and organ accompaniment. 8) Ask the entire congregation to sing the Kyrie with choir and organ. hh) Ask the congregation to sing the Kyrie with organ, without choir. i) Repeat this procedure with the other parts of the Service at succeeding congregational re- hearsals. i) Keep the rehearsal moving at a brisk pace. 5. On longer sections, like the Gloria in Excelsis, begin with @ part of it and follow the procedure out lined above. 6. While the congregation is learning the music, the choirs and children may sing the new setting for a month or two. It is very important that the majority of the con- gregation know the new setting well before using it in ice, so that it is successful the first time it Eastertide 1959 Epwaro W.
