a Insti Bs for Op ais ‘ _ LIONEL TRAIN OUTF To set up your track layout — join the track sections by insert- ing the pins of one track section far as they will go in the rail openings of the next section, Track joints: shouldbe-tight-to- insure good electrical contact, If you can fasten, th k to a plywood-platform 8/8 or 1/2 inch thick your road‘bed will be more secure and your track will last longer. For fastening .yse one No. 3 x 1/2”? round head wood screw for each section. Do not screw the track down tightly but only enough to keep it from shifting, Enough track is pro- vided with this- outfit to make a simple oval layout (Figure 1) that will fit on a board 3 feet by Figure 1- Assembled Track 4 feet. a a PORTANT on a The transformer fumished with this train set has been approved by the Under- writers Laboratories: and has been carefully tested to assure proper perfor- mance. Since this transformer does not have a built-in circuit breaker, the use of a Separate circuit breaker, such as Lionel No. 92 or 91, is recommended to protect it against possible harm fromyaccidental short circuits caused by railments or improper wiring, BOUT SHORT CIRCUITS 4 A short circuit is caused by @ direct connection between the center rail and one of the outside rails, or by a direct Pee between the transformer bind- ing posts. A derailed car or locomotive # the most frequent cause of short cir- cuits so make sure that all the wheels are properly set on the rails. Some other causes ofshort circuits, illustrated below, might be tinsel or some metallic object jying’'across therails, two bare wires touching each other, etc. = 2, Figure 2 - Some Causes of *‘Short Circuit If you discover that a short circuit condition exists, immediately turn trans- former voltage control handle to “off? and correct the condition. Pull out the wall plug when the transformer is not in use, ‘ Page 1 Figure 3 - The rails are connected to fer with two wires and the track lock- on supplied with this outfit. Place ieMacer gate straight section of.track so that the flange of one of the outside rails fits into the-wide V-shaped-notch_ onthe lockon. Then press the lockon upward so that the spring contact sndps on to the COME Strip the yn from the ends’ of the wires, Wrap the bare end of a wire around the screw portion of one of the transformer binding posts and tighten the thumb nut to hold the wire. Clip the other end of the wire into one of the lockon spring terminals. Push down the upper half of the terminal until the metal loop in the lower part projects through the top. Insert the bare wire end into the loop and release the upper half. Spring tension will hold the wire tight. In the same way connect the remaining transformer post to the other lockon clip. The order does not matter, The transformer supplied with this train outfit is large enough to supply your train and one or two additional lights or continuously operating track signals. It can also provide power for Lionel accessory equipment, provided that these accessories are operated one at a time. If you attempt to operate too much equip- ment at one time, you will overload the transformer and cause it to overheat and down the train,-Whenyou.decideto.expand-yourtailzead-it-is-edvisable~— to obtain a larger transformer. After your transformer has been operating for a while you will find it warn e to the touch. It is the nature of all electrical power equipment to become i when in use. If your transformer is loaded to capacity it’s a good idea to let it cool down after an hour or two of continuous use. HOW TO OPERATE THE TRAIN i After the track layout is assembled, place the locomotive and carg on the track making sure that all the wheels are praggrly set on the rails. Tf any offthag wheels are derailed they may touch the cei and cause a ‘short-circuit To couple two cars simply push them toget! any straight stretch of track. Of course, at least one of the mating cquplers must be open for coupling to take place. The order of the cars in the fain does not matter but the caboose is usually the last car in the train, When the train is ready, plug the transformer cord into any convenient wall outlet and advance the transformer control arm until the train begins to move — eitherforward-orbackward, This locomotive is equipped with a reversing “E-Unit” which operates automatically, The train will change direction every time the current is interrupted. To stop the train simply move the transformer control to ‘‘OFFY’ This locomotive can be made to operate constantly in either forward or reverse if the “‘E-Unit’’ lever is turned “OFF”. Figure 4 - Reversing Unit Lever Page 2 Because the ae works automatically whenever current is inter- rupted the locomotive may change direction if it loses contact with the center rail accidentally because of dirty rails, loose connecting wires, missing rail pins or bumpy track, “'CAM-TROL"' UNCOUPLING The cars in this train outfit are equipped with operating couplers which can be openedeither manually, by means of the “Cam-Trol”” uncoupling unit furnished with this outfit, or by any remote control uncoupling track section. The “Cam Trol’? unit is mounted on one of the straight track sections furnished with the train set. > To uncouple a car from a train move the “Cam-Trol’? lever to “Uncouple’” as the truck you want released is passing over the uncoupling unit, This action will elevate the uncoupling blades which will pull down the coupler trigger disc and allow the coupler knuckle to snap open, If you want to operate the ‘‘Cam-Trol’’ un- coupler from a distance, tie a piece of strong thin twine to the ‘‘Cam-Trol” lever, pass the string through the holes and around the pin provided for this purpose in the “Cam-Trol” base (See Figure 5) and bring it out to your control position. A pull on the string will now move the lever and uncouple the car. For this type of operation the ‘‘Cam-Trol” unit must be nailed or screwed down to the table or plat- form. If operating on a rug, insert a piece of cardboard under the “Cam-Trol’’ unit, Other- Figure 5 - Remote Operation wise the nap may interfere with proper operation. of 'Cam-Trol”” Note: This outfit has no means to contro} Lionel operating cars. If you ever expand your railroad. by getting operating or unloading cars you will have to obtain a Nos 6019 Remote Contro? If the rail openings have become enlarged causing the track to fit loosely, pinch the together around a track pin with a pair e diagonal pliers or re-form rail ends ith “Special Lionel Track Pliers ST-384 ailable from the Lionel Service Department $2.95, Replace all missing pins. Serews ‘A’ and ‘B' hold the motor. é Page 3 LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE The moving parts of your locomotive such as gears, side rods, and wheel axles, and especially the ends of the motor armature shaft,’ require periodic lubrication. So do the axles of the tender and other rolling’ stock. When operating the road regularly, inspect these parts frequently to make sure that they don’t run dry and to prevent thé accumulation of dust and dirt. Also clean and lubri- cate the locomotive after storage. Only a very small quantity of lubricant is necessary at any one time. DO NOT OVER-LUBRICATE. Keep lubricant off motor brushes, wheel rims, track rails, and contact rollers. HEADLAMP REPLACEMENT The locomotive headlight uses a 14-volt miniature 2-pin base lamp behind ‘the boiler front. The lamp socket is part of the smoke unit. To replace a burnt- out lamp, removerthe-screws~(Pigure-7)-holding-the-boiler assembly and lift it off the motor. Pull the lamp straight up, disengaging the pins. Locate the pins of a new Lionel No. L19 lamp in the socket and push it straight down. Turing the lamp when removing or installing it may snap off the pins in the socket. LIONEL SMOKE GENERATOR This locomotive is equipped with the latest type smoke generator designed for use with the new Lionel No. 909 smoke-producing fluid furnished in squeeze bottles. Place four to eight drops of smoke fluid in the smoke generator through the locomotive stack to produce smoke after track power is applied for several seconds. The locomotive will puff only when the wheels are turning. More than eight drops of fluid may cause the generator to overflow and the fluid to spill from the loco- motive, a ~The new Nov 909"*Smioke Liquid’ Has "been rigorously tested and is free from any toxic effects even if accidentally swallowedt The fluid is» chemically similar to petroleum-base machine oil. Any stains can be re- moved with standard cleaning fluids, : *¢ . NOTE Lionel Service Department andl ioi thorized Service StStions endeavor to provide the fastest poss: ‘ice at all times.
