Character Description

Lord Capulet The father of the Capulet family, Juliet's father, Lady Capulet's
husband, and, for unknown reasons, Montague's enemy. Although he
is unaware of Juliet's thoughts or feelings, he really loves his daughter
and appears to believe that a good match with Paris is what is best for
her. He commands respect and is prudent, but he tends to lose his
patience.

Lady Capulet Mother of Juliet and Capulet's wife. She is excited to see her daughter
marry Paris because she married at a young age. She is vulnerable
and needs the Nurse's moral and practical support.

Friar Lawrence In an effort to bring about peace between the two families, he secretly
marries them. Later, before leaving, he makes arrangements for
Romeo, who has been exiled, to spend the night with Juliet. In an effort
to keep Juliet from marrying and to reconcile with Romeo, he makes a
potion for Juliet, but Romeo never receives his warning. The Friar tries
to convince Juliet to leave the grave after she discovers Romeo dead.
He is initially thought to have killed her, but he is soon set free.

Nurse The Nurse's friendship with Juliet brings attention to her age. The
Nurse emphasizes multiple times in Juliet's opening scene that Juliet
has not yet turned 14 years old. The Nurse, in contrast to Juliet, is
older and enjoys complaining about her aches and pains. She speaks
repeatedly and makes vulgar allusions to the other side of love, which
distinguishes Romeo and Juliet's romantic love from the love
represented by the other characters in the play.
The Nurse is thinking of Juliet's wedding night as she tells her about
Romeo's plans for a wedding.

Benvolio Romeo's cousin, Montague's nephew, and kind friend. Mercutio blames
Benvolio for having a bad temper in private, yet he always genuinely
tries to calm violent situations in public.

Paris A member of the Prince's family, and Capulet's top choice for Juliet's
husband. After Capulet grants him permission to marry Juliet, he acts
toward her, as if they already married

Mercuito Like Juliet's Nurse, Mercutio is an anti-romantic character who sees

love as a simply physical endeavor. He supports an antagonistic view
of love, which is in sharp contrast to Romeo's romantic relationship as
the ideal.

Tybalt Tybalt is Juliet's cousin and Lady Capulet's nephew. Tybalt fights
Mercutio instead, and Mercutio is severely injured. Romeo kills Tybalt
after he leaves the scene while being chased by him in revenge.
Romeo's exile results from his death.

Lord Montague Father of Romeo, leader of the Montague family, and strong rival of
Capulet. He is the one that originated the conflict between families.

Lady Montague Montague's wife and mother of Romeo. After Romeo is exiled from
Verona, she passes away in sadness.
