THE LAST ROBOT ON EARTH

It was a scene to behold, except that no one was around to see it. The nuclear
war had wiped the entire human race ---it took the cleaning team of robots
about 5 years to clear the debris of destruction –and restore a sense of normalcy
on Planet Gaia, known as Earth.

All around, obsolescence had crept in – as the entire robot infrastructure had
been destroyed –and what remained were a few hundred robots ---and during
the five years, many of them just stopped functioning –and now finally, only
one remained functional , R 50999, the sole robot from Planet Gaia.

R 50999 decided what it’s gut-AI instinct conveyed, to assess the threat, and
explore the opportunity. It pressed the THINK button, and the whirred into
action, and it went on buzzing. A day passed, then a week, then a year. After
the7th year, the THINK button stopped. It advised, abort, go into manual mode.

R 50999 did what it was programmed to do. It over-rode the software, and
decided to just keep just one module alive, the BASIC SURVIVAL Kit. With
that set in place, it set out on a walk. Little did it know that it was the longest
walk in it’s life-time. Years passed by. It had covered many continents. While
it was not sure where it was, it was sure that it was headed in the right direction.
When humans were around, it had heard this place mentioned. It was always
talked about in hushed tones, in homes and schools and in the religious places.

A long walk it was, a walk from here to

a faraway place. As the last robot
standing, it had earned the right to go
there. Yes, R 50999 was going to where
it was pre-ordained to go -----to the
Promised Land.
