MBA6009 Information systems for managers MBA

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION
The objective of this course is to explore different ways in which information technology and
information systems supporting business objectives and goals. The interrelationship between the
information system and the organizational dimensions will have to be analysed and improved in
order to gain competitive advantage in the digital age.
This course examines the fundamental principles associated with the strategic adoption,
implementation, use and evaluation of information systems in organisations. It discusses the
significant managerial aspects of treating information and knowledge as organizational resources
and their increasing impact on today’s business environment.

2. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Upon successfully completing this course, a student will be able to do the following:
(1) Identify opportunities to gain competitive advantage in the digital age.
(2) Identify managerial challenges and opportunities for organizational advancement that
may be resolved by the digital transformation.
(3) Define and recognize key enabling technologies that may support organizations in their
digital transformation.
(4) Explain applications as the Internet, telecommunications, enterprise systems, knowledge
management, business intelligence and other organizational support technologies and
relate them to solving organization problems.
(5) Make required personal and organizational changes to implement successfully the new
technologies in different types of organizations.

4. EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES
The course will involve lectures, readings, cases and discussions. The following methods are
preferred:
• In preparation for each module, readings must have been made; case studies should be
prepared; and self-questionnaires should have been completed.
• Recommended lectures to complement and integrate the readings will be given by the
lecturer.
• Case study discussions will be conducted to deepen the theoretical concepts. Participation
in these discussions will be taken into account.
• Role-play exercises will be implemented to practice the management and leadership
skills.
• Group discussions and presentation will be performed to assess the understanding and
application of management and leadership skills.

6. COURSE GRADE
Student’s grade for this course will be based upon participation in-class activities and mastery of
course concepts as demonstrated by successfully completing the exercises assigned for each
class.

To receive the full participation score, the student must attend all the classes and participate in all
activities, including group discussion, self-report, role play, and group presentation.

7. OTHER INDICATIONS
The attendance as well as the participation in each module of the course are essential not only for
the purposes of evaluation, but also because the requirements of the learning process.
Students are expected to read topics in textbooks and recommended reading ahead of class.
The use of electronic devices in class is only authorized for taking notes, consulting on-line
resources or doing practical exercises. To realize exercises in class and the term project, every
team has to bring at least a laptop computer.
