FILM REVIEW - SHOLAY

ACTION THRILLER

(Viru), Sanjeevkumar (Thakur Baldev Singh-a
police Inspector), Jaya Bahaduri (Radha),
Hema Malini (Basanti), Amjad Khan (Gabbar).

Director: Ramesh Sippy

Screenplay: Javed Akhtar, Salim Khan

Duration- 03hrs Language: Hindi (U/A)

Release Date- 15th August 1975

Story - SHOLAY – What a thrilling film! It is a story of the conflict between Jay and Viru
with Gabbarsingh. The story swings into action with the police inspector inviting two ill-
famous criminals to help him. He shows his arms cut-off and the story enters into flashback.
The love story between Jay and the widowed daughter-in-law of the police inspector on one
side and between Viru and Basanti, a tongawali on the other add colors to it.

Characters – Thakur is clean and moralistic while Gabbar is dirty and absolutely amoral in his
ways. Jay is the quite guy, introvert while Viru outgoing, extrovert. Basanti is chatty while
Radha is quiet. All the smallest characters –Jailer, Kaaliya, Sambha, Rahim Chacha are all
widely remembered for their bit parts.

Music - The song “Yeh Dosti---(Kishorekumar, Manna Day) has beat the test of time. This
friendship song is the most remembered ever. Music maestro R .D. Burman’s songs,
“Mehbooba--- and “Holi ke din--- are listened till date.

Dialogues -The witty dialogues are entertaining and unforgettable experience for the viewer.
The dialogues “Jo darr gaya samjho mar gaya”, “Tera kya hoga kaliya?”, “ Itana Sannata
kyu hai Bhai? are still green.

Review: Excellent story, equally effective screenplay and dialogue and wonderful acting from
all actors make the film a grand success on the screen. The film is about love, friendship,
revenge and sorrow. Amjad Khan created an excellent heartless villain. He gave a new
dimension to villainy. With Mausi’s shrewd remarks, Soorma Bhopali’s accent, a comical Jailer
Sholay makes for a good laugh.

My Opinion
I have seen the film many times, but whenever I see it, I enjoy it as a new creation. Audience
regards it as a movie of the century. A must watch movie for all.

Action Film
Pushpa – The Rise
part 1

Director – Sukumar B

Music – Devi Sri Prasad

Produced by – Mythri Movie Makers

Cinematography – Miroslow Kuba Brozek

Language - Hindi, Telgu, Tamil, Kannada

Cast – Allu Arjun, Rashmika Manndana, Ajay Ghosh, Fahadh Faasil

Story –

The film tells the story of Pushpa Raj, an outcast. Born out of wedlock, Pushpa is denied
respect and robbed of his identity at a very young age. He is a lorry driver in Seshachalam
forests of South India who rises in the world of Red Sandalwood smuggling. He dreams to be
the king in syndicate world. He fights with other smugglers and police officers. In the
process, he falls in love with Srivalli. His overpowering with Konda Reddy and Mangalam
Srinu takes an interesting turn.

Review –

It is a rustic masala film filled with punch dialogues and characters that speak in a chittor
dialect. Allu Arjun is the heart and soul of the movie. His acting and dialogues are just
phenomenal. The lead role by Allu Arjun along with national crush Rashmika and item song
by Samantha has impressed the audiences most. Rashmika has a very little scope in the
movie and she did well in her limited character. The film moves slowly so it is a little boring.
The dialogues, ‘Pushpa.. Pushpa Raj... Main jhukega nahi, Sala’ and ‘Pushpa naam sunkar
flower samjhe kya?.. fire hai mein’ is an instant hit amongst audiences. ‘Saami saami’ and
‘Srivalli’ songs have tremendous success.

My opinion -

Allu Arjun is outstanding in his performance. His hook steps dance on Srivalli song has gone
viral. I too have created such a scene by dragging my feet. Superb acting by all! Good movie
and waiting for part 2.

Review -
As expected of a Bollywood picture, 3 Idiots is extravagant. This is an energetic film. It is a
provocative, funny, and wildly entertaining movie. It has a flashback story. 3 Idiots is a
blockbuster movie. It is a comic and melodramatic movie raising some issues like ragging,
suicide, parental expectations, pressure and poverty. All the actors acted well. Excellent film!

My Opinion -

It is one of the best motivational films in the history of Bollywood. It teaches to be creative
rather than memorize the books. It tells to follow your passion. Every student must watch this
film. I enjoyed the film very much.

Aakash and Rinku are superb in acting. Other characters have played their parts effectively.

Cinema work was just awesome. It depicts caste discrimination in society. It shows the
challenges of inter caste marriages. A milestone cinema in Marathi industry!

The story is apt. Sairat means wild i.e. free, sheer wildness, full of enthusiasm and full of

The Book –
Genre – childhood memories (autobiographical novel)
Language – Marathi
Pages – 231 Price – 150/-
Publisher – Pune Vidyarthi Griha Prakashan

The author – “Shyamchi Aai” is a great work in Marathi

literature by Pandurang Sadashiv Sane (‘Sane Guruji’).
He was a sensitive man with a creative imagination and
a prolific writer.

Characters – The main characters, as the title

suggests; Shyam and his mother. Additional
characters are his family and friends.
Publication Date – February 16, 1936
Background and Time – period - 1899 – 1950
Sane Guruji belongs from a Brahmin family in a konkan region of rural Maharashtra during
British Raj. Sane Guruji fondly called Shyam during his childhood. Sane Guruji wrote this book
while he was in jail.

Language – Simple language is used. Single day’s reading book. It has a magical impact on mind.
It makes emotional and bring tears. It has pure and lucid style.

Story – Sane Guruji, a freedom seeker on Gandhian principles reminisces on his childhood in
Palgad and Dapoli. It explores the world of little Shyam and his mother Yashoda. The
protagonist, Shyam’s mother is the universal mother taking care of her children and
household. Her simplicity, profound wisdom, self-esteem, her struggling power are the real
wealth for her children. Her caring attitude towards wounded birds, dying cows and to her
personal favorite cat, appeals our sensitivity. She suffers downward from a Bungalow to a hut,
losing her children to poverty, to smallpox. What she never loses is her dignity and values.

Review – This is an excellent book. It teaches the children values and manners. The story is
about Shyam and all incidents in his life. It reveals the relation between Shyam and his
mother. It gives detailed description of rural life and recipes. The story of the sparrow is my
favorite part in this book. Acharya Atre’s film based on the book also won a National Award.

My experience – While reading, I became emotional. I noticed behavioral change in me. I

found myself being thoughtful. I am eager to watch the movie.

Book Review

The Book – To Sir, with Love

The author – E. R. Braithwaite

Genre – autobiographical novel

Language – English Pages – 189
Background and Time – mid – 1940s
Publication Date – January 1, 1959

Characters – The main character is Ricky

Braithwaite and other important characters
are Gillian Blanchard, Mr. Florian, Mrs. Dale-
Evans, Pamela, Denham, Potter, Fernman,
Miss. Joseph, Miss. Dodd etc.

Story – The narrator is an engineer, but to make both ends meet, he accepts the job of a
teacher in a rough London East End school. The school is full of troublemaker students who
were rejected from other schools for their behavior. At the beginning, the narrator is
ridiculed and bullied by the students, but later his calm attitude and desire to see them
succeed gradually earn him their respect.

Theme – The theme of the novel is student- teacher relationship and racism. A dedicated
teacher had turned hate into love, rebel in self-respect, contempt into consideration for
others. This is the story of a man’s integrity winning through against the odds.

Language – Braithwaite’s detailed description of the school’s atmosphere paints a vivid picture
for the readers. The use of long and complex sentences shows narrator’s educational
background. It is a smooth sailing plot with the use of Transferred Epithet and other various
features of language.

Review – To Sir, with Love is a beautiful and inspiring memoir. It is a real portrait of racism. It
describes the society and culture prevalent in the UK, Post World War II. The book takes us
into the life of Braithwaite. The ups and downs in his life, his interaction with the class,
transformation in students, keep a reader glued to the book till the end. The book is
fascinating to read to learn how Braithwaite tame his students and how they resist to it. I
loved ‘To Sir, with Love’. The novel is even picturized.
