“21ST Century Literature from the Philippines and

the world”
QUARTER 1
WEEK 1.1
SAQ-1: What can you say about the native of precolonial literature in the Philippines?
 Folk tales, epics, sayings, and riddles are some form of pre-colonial
Philippine literature and they give us insight to the base of the literary
prosed displayed during the Spanish colonization like the novel of DR. Jose
Rizal which is the “Noli Me Tangere” that sparked the Philippines
Revolution together with its sequel “El Filibusterismo” and also pre-
colonial Philippine literature add some information in our own history.
SAQ-2: Why do you think that it is important to study the different forms of pre-colonial literature?
 Well as I said earlier studying pre-colonial literature especially in our own
country is important because it gives us insight to the bases of the literary
prose displayed during the Spanish colonization or it shows our own history
in the past as Filipinos, to know where we come from, what are our leaders
and great Filipinos has done for us throughout the years and studying it give
us information in the past.
1. Why is this story considered as a precolonial Philippine literature?
 Because first it shows why MT. Pulong bato named Pulong bato and of how
we know it until today because it has been pass on from generation to
generation originally through an oral tradition.
2. What form of pre-colonial literature is the story?
 Folk tales or legend or myths
3. Is the story didactic? If yes, what lesson is it trying to teach its audience?
 Yes, its tries to teach us loyalty because one of the wife of the sultan named
sumping pote betrayed his husband for choosing the young prince Wata
over him and set sail to sea but the sultan capture them and spare them but
punish them. In this story it teaches us that the saddest thing about betrayal
is that it never comes from your enemies and Life has taught sultan Dakula
that you can't control someone's loyalty and he realized that nothing hurts
more than being disappointed by the single person you thought would never
hurt you.
4. How come we still know of this story? How do you think was it preserved?
 Because it has been pass from generation to generation originally through
oral tradition However, wealthy families, especially in Mindanao, were able
to keep transcribed copies of these epics as family heirloom. One such was
the Darangen, an epic of the Maranaos.
5. How do you think was this story relayed to the community?
 Through oral tradition or through word of mouth or preserved the literature
and were able to keep transcribed copies.
