An introvert in a wrong group

Having fun is a very subjective thing. For some it is rave parties, clubbing, dancing to the
disk jockey’s loud music, going window shopping, etc., for others it may be taking a long
walk or ride to the woods in the lap of nature. Some people like partying daily while others
party occasionally on special occasions and that too for a brief period. I fall into the latter
category. From my past experiences I have observed that I feel tired after attending a festival
or a gathering in which the crowd is over-energized. Every time I party with extroverts, I
wonder what is the point of partying if one doesn’t have fun at the party or is constantly
counting the kind of things they could have done instead. Simultaneously, I am also reminded
of one of Buddha’s quotes “The problem is you think you have time”. Then I feel guilty for
having wasted time.
Last weekend, I went on a 2 days vacation with some of my friends. Although I knew that I
won’t be able to enjoy the weekend as much on the trip, I don’t know why I could not refuse
the persistent persuasion of the group. I reluctantly agreed. As expected, I did not enjoy the
trip to the extent other members of the group had enjoyed. Most of the vacation was about
eating in restaurants, clubbing, and alcoholic beverages. After returning from the trip, I
regretted my poor decision. In an MBA program, having 2 days’ leave is a privilege. I could
have done a lot of productive things in those two days.
One should not conclude that I am an insipid person who doesn’t like to have fun. It is just
that the things which give me joy are different from those liked by the masses in general. I
hate being in a chaotic and noisy environment. I have observed that I get drained out in an
over-enthusiastic milieu. There are times when I get the feeling that things are changing at
quite a brisk pace. I get uncomfortable with that feeling. I like to be in places that have a
certain order, are serene, and have an easy flow.
I like traveling, exploring new places, reading books, watching political commentaries, and
playing sports like badminton and chess. I have also observed that whenever I come across a
radical idea or concept, the curiosity to know that idea grows disproportionately. For
instance, when I came across the philosophy of Fredrich Nietzsche, I got fascinated by his
radical idea, and the process of getting familiar with his idea gave me immense pleasure.
I am a nature enthusiast. Mountain ranges, waterfalls, lakes, serene landscapes, etc. fascinate
me. Given a choice, I would rather go to a historical monument which is our national heritage
too, rather than a club. I love the safari of Tiger Reserves and Wildlife sanctuaries, or a long
ride on a quiet road in the midst of a dense forest. I also have a wild fantasy of getting the
time machine and traveling back and forth in time to see what the past actually looked like
and how the future will turn up to be in 1000 years from now.
The list of things to do for fun is ever expanding. Let’s see how many of them can I mark as
complete!
